Lesson Transcript

In today’s lesson, we will cover a phrase used to get you to a destination when you are riding a taxi. First, let’s go over a location. We will use Gangnam Station which in Korean is 강남역 (gangnamyeok). One time slowly, it’s 강남역 (gangnamyeok). And now by syllable, 강-남-역 (gang-nam-yeok). Gangnam is the name of a very famous subway station and 역 (yeok) in Korean is station. So together, it’s 강남역 (gangnamyeok) pretty simple hah! Next, we will go over how to tell your taxi driver to go to Gangnam Station. In addition to the station, let’s add 가주세요 (gajuseyo) which means go please. One time slowly, it’s 가주세요 (gajuseyo). And now by syllable, 가-주-세-요 (ga-ju-se-yo). This means go. So let’s do this.
Let’s add one and one Gangnam station and go please. In Korean, the location comes in the front. So let’s do this. Gangnam Station go please. 강남역 가주세요 (gangnamyeok gajuseyo). One time slowly 강남역 가주세요 (gangnamyeok gajuseyo). And now by syllable, 강-남-역 가-주-세-요 (gang-nam-yeok ga-ju-se-yo). Let’s try to do one on our own, shall we? How about going to Seoul Station, what would it be? 서울역 가주세요 (seoulyeok gajuseyo). One time slowly, 서울역 가주세요 (seoulyeok gajuseyo). And now by syllable, 서-울-역 가-주-세-요 (seo-ul-yeok ga-ju-se-yo). Now in Korea, there are usually two different types of taxis. There are your normal average taxis that you know average Joes take. And there is higher class taxis that maybe some other people with a little more money than the rest of us can take. It’s a little more expensive but they also provide a better service but don’t be expecting foot massages or anything.
These higher grade taxis can be distinguished by their color. They are nice sleek black, a lot nicer than those average Joe taxis. You will know when you see one and if you don’t, you will know by the price which is probably around 1.5 to 3 times the price of a normal taxi. Grabbing a taxi is not a problem at all. There are plenty of taxis and they are definitely at the hotels. Wherever you go, it will be pretty easy to get a taxi. Also, tip is not expected in Korea. So, don’t worry about giving anything extra.
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
