Once on the bus, you will hear announcements informing the passengers of where the bus will stop next. Now, in the case that there is no English announcement, you may not catch the location just announced. So, the phrase what is the next stop may prove to be invaluable. In Korean, what is the next stop is 다음 정류장은 뭐예요 (daeum jeongnyujangeun mwoyeyo)? Kind of long, hah! Let’s listen again. 다음 정류장은 뭐예요 (daeum jeongnyujangeun mwoyeyo)? One more time fast and then let’s break it down by word. 다음 정류장은 뭐예요 (daeum jeongnyujangeun mwoyeyo)? The first word 다음 (daeum) means next. Let’s break it down and hear it one more time. 다음 (da-eum). The next word is 정류장 (jeongnyujang). This is bus stop. Let’s do it a little slowly. 정류장 (jeongnyujang). This word means bus stop but a piece of information. Bus is actually not included in the word. Bus is just 버스 (beoseu). 정류장 (jeongnyujang) means stop. What follows 정류장 (jeongnyujang) is 은 (eun). This is a topic marker. So whatever precedes 은 (eun) is the topic of the sentence. In this case, the bus stop is the topic of the sentence. One more time together, it’s 정류장은 (jeongnyujangeun).
This is followed by 뭐 (mwo) which means what. Let’s hear it one more time, 뭐 (mwo). Lastly we have 예요 (yeyo) which means is. Let’s hear it one more time, 예요 (yeyo). Like Rocky ayo! Okay maybe not. Literally we have next bus stop what is or translated, it’s what is the next bus stop. 다음 정류장은 뭐예요 (daeum jeongnyujangeun mwoyeyo)? Another way of enquiring could be asking if your desired destination is next. For this phrase, we will use 강남역 (gangnamyeok) as the destination or Gangnam Station. So, the question is going to be, is Gangnam station next. 강남역은 다음이에요 (gangnamyeogeun daeumieyo)?
Let’s break down the components. The first word is 강남역 (gangnamyeok) which means Gangnam Station. 강남역 (gangnamyeok). Next we have 은 (eun). This once again is a topic marker. 강남역은 (gangnamyeogeun). This is followed by 다음 (daeum) which in Korean is next. 다음 (daeum). Lastly we have 이에요 (ieyo) which means is. It differs from the first question because of the word preceding it but right now, that’s beyond the scope of this lesson. So let’s just listen one more time. 이에요 (ieyo). So altogether, we have 강남역은 다음이에요 (gangnamyeogeun daeumieyo)? Literally we have Gangnam station next is or rather, is Gangnam station next.
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
what is the next bus stop - 다음 정류장은 뭐예요 (daeum jeongnyujangeun mwoyeyo)?
Is Gangnam station next - 강남역은 다음이에요 (gangnamyeogeun daeumieyo)?
