This is the 요 (yo) sound, and this is the vs 여 (yeo) sound. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to tell them apart, PLUS you'll be practicing them and on your way to perfect pronunciation!
I'm Joyce, and this is Korean Pronunciation Through Minimal Pairs.
First is 요 (yo). This is the 요 (yo) sound in 안녕하세요, 좋아요, and other words.
여 (yeo) is the 여 (yeo) sound in 여자, 여기, 여행, and other words.
These two vowels are also diphthongs.
To make the 요 (yo) sound: round your lips slightly as if saying ㅗ (o) (o as in "go"). Then, add a slight y sound at the beginning by slightly raising the middle of your tongue towards the roof of your mouth. It's similar to yo in "yoga."

Then, add a slight y sound at the beginning by raising the middle of your tongue towards the roof of your mouth. The sound is similar to yaw in "yawn," but with a softer and more relaxed quality. |
