INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 49. Talking About an Interrupted Action.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about an interrupted action.
PATTERN
Dana: For example, "I was sleeping when she arrived."
Jaehwi: 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
[slow] 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
Dana: The pattern for talking about an interrupted action has four elements. First, the pronoun plus subject marking particle...
Jaehwi: 가(ga).
Jaehwi: Together, this is 그녀가 (geunyeoga).
Dana: Second, the verb in past tense, plus
Jaehwi: 을 때 (eul ttae)
Dana: To indicate "when the action happened".
Jaehwi: In this case, 도착했을때 (dochakhaesseulttae).
Dana: Third, the verb stem “to sleep.”
Jaehwi: 자(ja).
Dana: And last, the present progressive for “was doing.”
Jaehwi: 고 있었어요 (go isseosseoyo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I was sleeping when she arrived."
Jaehwi: 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
[slow] 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
[normal] 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
Dana: The phrase...
Jaehwi: ㄹ 때 ~고 있었다 (...l ttae... go isseotda) or 을 때 ~고 있었다 (...eul ttae... go isseotda)
Dana: ...is used to describe an interrupted action. The past tense of the verb, by combining verb stem with…
Jaehwi: 았 (at) or 었 (eot).
Dana: Then we have…
Jaehwi: 을때(eul ttae)
Dana: … attached to a verb to describe the action that interrupts the ongoing action.
Dana: To describe the action that was taking place before the interruption took place, use the sentence structure: verb stem plus...
Jaehwi: 고 있었다 (go isseotda)
Dana: ...at the end of the sentence.
Jaehwi: 그녀가 도착했을때 자고 있었어요. (geunyeoga dochakhaesseulttae jago isseosseoyo.)
Dana: So remember, use the grammatical structure…
Jaehwi: ㄹ때 ~고 있었다 (l ttae ~go isseotda) or 을때 ~고 있었다 (eul ttae ~go isseotda)
Dana: ...to describe an interrupted action.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I was watching TV when the delivery came." First, noun plus subject-marking particle…
Jaehwi: 가(ga).
Jaehwi: Which is 택배가 (taegbaega).
Dana: Second, the verb in past tense, "when the action happened".
Jaehwi: The verb stem plus 았 (at) or 었 (eot) plus 을 때(eul ttae).
Jaehwi: In this case, 왔을때 (wasseulttae).
Dana: Third, the verb stem for “to watch TV.”
Jaehwi: 텔레비전을 보(tellebijeoneul bo).
Dana: And last, the sentence ending meaning “was doing.”
Jaehwi: 고 있었어요 (go isseosseoyo).
Dana: Altogether, we have...
Jaehwi: 택배가 왔을때 텔레비전을 보고 있었어요. (taegbaega wasseulttae tellebijeoneul bogo isseosseoyo.)
[slow] 택배가 왔을때 텔레비전을 보고 있었어요. (taegbaega wasseulttae tellebijeoneul bogo isseosseoyo.)
[normal] 택배가 왔을때 텔레비전을 보고 있었어요. (taegbaega wasseulttae tellebijeoneul bogo isseosseoyo.)
Dana: "I was watching TV when the delivery came."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 택배가 왔을때 텔레비전을 보고 있었어요. (taegbaega wasseulttae tellebijeoneul bogo isseosseoyo.)
Dana: How do you say, "I was studying when my friend called me."? To give you a hint, "called" is...
Jaehwi: 불렀다 (buleotta). [slow] 불렀다 (buleotta). [normal] 불렀다 (buleotta).
Dana: "I was studying when my friend called me."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 친구가 불렀을때 공부하고 있었어요. (chinguga beulleoseulttae gongbuhago isseosseoyo)
[slow] 친구가 불렀을때 공부하고 있었어요. (chinguga beulleoseulttae gongbuhago isseosseoyo)
[normal] 친구가 불렀을때 공부하고 있었어요. (chinguga beulleoseulttae gongbuhago isseosseoyo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 친구가 불렀을때 공부하고 있었어요. (chinguga beulleoseulttae gongbuhago isseosseoyo)
