INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 46. Asking for Help.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting help.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "Could you help me?"
Jaehwi: 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
Jaehwi: [slow] 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
Dana: The pattern for requesting help has two elements. First, the verb stem plus
Jaehwi: 아줄 (ajul) or 어줄(eojul),
Jaehwi: In this case, 도와줄 (dowajul).
Dana: Second, “can be” or “be able to.”
Jaehwi: 수 있어요 (su isseoyo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "Could you help me?"
Jaehwi: 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
[slow] 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
[normal] 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
Dana: When you want to ask someone for help, use the phrase
Jaehwi: 아줄수 있어요? (ajul su isseoyo?) or 어줄수 있어요? (eojul su isseoyo?)
Dana: Simply add the phrase after the verb or action you seek help for. It is used when you are requesting help for an action that will take place in the future.
Jaehwi: 도와줄 수 있어요? (dowajul su isseoyo?)
Dana: So remember, when requesting help from someone, use the phrase…
Jaehwi: 아줄수 있어요? (ajul su isseoyo?) or 어줄수 있어요? (eojul su isseoyo?) or 여줄수 있어요? (yeojul su isseoyo?)
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "Could you do it for me?" First, the verb stem plus…
Jaehwi: 아줄 (ajul) or 어줄(eojul)
Jaehwi: Altogether, we have 해 줄 (haejul).
Dana: Second, “can be” or “be able to.”
Jaehwi: 수 있어요 (su isseoyo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: 해줄 수 있어요? (haejul su isseoyo?)
[slow] 해줄 수 있어요? (haejul su isseoyo?)
[normal] 해줄 수 있어요? (haejul su isseoyo?)
Dana: "Could you do it for me?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 해줄 수 있어요? (haejul su isseoyo?)
Dana: How do you say, "Could you meet up with me?"? To give you a hint, "agree to meet up with" is...
Jaehwi: 만나 주다 (manna juda). [slow] 만나 주다 (manna juda). [normal] 만나 주다 (manna juda).
Dana: "Could you meet up with me?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 만나줄 수 있어요? (mannajul su isseyo?)
[slow] 만나줄 수 있어요? (mannajul su isseyo?)
[normal] 만나줄 수 있어요? (mannajul su isseyo?)
