INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 31 - Asking for Instructions.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for asking for instructions.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "How do I turn on this coffee machine?"
Jaehwi: 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?)
Jaehwi: [slow] 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?)
Dana: The pattern for asking for instructions has 4 elements. First, there’s the demonstrative pronoun.
Jaehwi: 이 (i).
Dana: Second, you say the noun.
Jaehwi: 커피머신 (keopimeosin).
Dana: Third, the adverb.
Jaehwi: 어떻게 (eotteokke).
Dana: And last, you use the verb stem plus the inquisitive present
Jaehwi: 아/어/여요 (a/eo/yeoyo).
Jaehwi: 틀어요 (teureoyo).
Dana: All together, we have "How do I turn on this coffee machine?"
Jaehwi: 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?) [slow] 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?) [normal] 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?)
Dana: You start with a pronoun and a noun to indicate what you are specifically asking how to do, followed by the adverb…
Jaehwi: 어떻게 (eotteokke), which means “how.”
Dana: You end the sentence with the verb stem and the sentence ending…
Jaehwi: 아/어/여요 (a/eo/yeoyo).
Jaehwi: 이 커피머신 어떻게 틀어요? (i keopimeosin eotteokke teureoyo?)
Dana: So remember, you can use this phrase to ask for instructions.
Dana: Here is another example, meaning "How do you put on that outfit?" First, use the demonstrative pronoun.
Jaehwi: 그 (geu).
Dana: Second, say the noun.
Jaehwi: 옷 (ot).
Dana: Third, use the adverb.
Jaehwi: 어떻게 (eotteokke).
Dana: And last, say the verb stem plus the inquisitive present…
Jaehwi: 아/어/여요 (a/eo/yeoyo).
Jaehwi: 입어요 (ibeoyo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 그 옷 어떻게 입어요? (geu ot eotteoge ibeoyo?) [slow] 그 옷 어떻게 입어요? (geu ot eotteoge ibeoyo?) [normal] 그 옷 어떻게 입어요? (geu ot eotteoge ibeoyo?)
Dana: "How do you put on that outfit?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 그 옷 어떻게 입어요? (geu ot eotteoge ibeoyo?)
Dana: How do you say "How do you use this computer"? To give you a hint, "use" is...
Jaehwi: 사용 (sayong). [slow] 사용 (sayong). [normal] 사용 (sayong).
Dana: "How do you use this computer?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 이 컴퓨터 어떻게 사용해요? (i keompyuteo eotteoke sayonghaeyo) [slow] 이 컴퓨터 어떻게 사용해요? (i keompyuteo eotteoke sayonghaeyo) [normal] 이 컴퓨터 어떻게 사용해요? (i keompyuteo eotteoke sayonghaeyo)
