INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 20. Using the Auxiliary Verb "Can."
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing your ability to do something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I can finish by tomorrow."
Lyn: 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.)
Lyn: [slow] 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.)
Eric: The pattern for expressing your ability to do something has 4 elements. First, the noun, "tomorrow."
Lyn: 내일 (naeil).
Eric: Second, the preposition, "by", "until."
Lyn: 까지 (kkaji).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to finish."
Lyn: 끝내 (kkeunnae).
Eric: And last, the phrase "to be able to."
Lyn: ㄹ 수 있어요 (l su isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I can finish by tomorrow."
Lyn: 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.) [slow] 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.) [normal] 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.)
Eric: The sentence ending you can use to express your ability, capability, or possibility is
Lyn: -ㄹ 수 있어요 (-l su isseoyo).
Eric: This phrase can be translated as "can" or "able to." To say “can do something” you just need to add the verb-stem right before this phrase. Note that for the verbs ending in a consonant, you need to use...
Lyn: 을 수 있어요 (-eul su isseoyo)
Eric: to mean “can” or “to be able to”
Lyn: 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.)
Eric: So remember that to express your ability, simply say what you can do by using the verb stem and add
Lyn: ㄹ 수 있어요 (l su isseoyo).
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I can go by morning." First, the noun, "morning."
Lyn: 아침 (achim).
Eric: Second, the preposition, "by", "until."
Lyn: 까지 (kkaji).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to go."
Lyn: 가 (ga).
Eric: And last, the phrase "to be able to."
Lyn: ㄹ 수 있어요 (l su isseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: 아침까지 갈 수 있어요. (achimkkaji gal su isseoyo.) [slow] 아침까지 갈 수 있어요. (achimkkaji gal su isseoyo.) [normal] 아침까지 갈 수 있어요. (achimkkaji gal su isseoyo.)
Eric: "I can go by morning."
[pause]
Lyn: 아침까지 갈 수 있어요. (achimkkaji gal su isseoyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I can hang out until the evening"? To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to hang out" is...
Lyn: 놀 (nol). [slow] 놀 (nol). [normal] 놀 (nol).
Eric: Note that this verb ends in a consonant. "I can hang out until the evening."
[pause]
Lyn: 저녁까지 놀 수 있어요. (jeonyeokkaji nol su isseoyo.) [slow] 저녁까지 놀 수 있어요. (jeonyeokkaji nol su isseoyo.) [normal] 저녁까지 놀 수 있어요. (jeonyeokkaji nol su isseoyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: 저녁까지 놀 수 있어요. (jeonyeokkaji nol su isseoyo.)

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go.
Eric: "I can finish by tomorrow."
[pause]
Lyn: 내일까지 끝낼 수 있어요. (naeilkkaji kkeunnael su isseoyo.)
