INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 19. Talking About the Future.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for describing something in the future.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I will study Korean quickly."
Lyn: 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Lyn: [slow] 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: The pattern for describing something in the future has 4 elements. First, the adverb, "fast."
Lyn: 빨리 (ppalli).
Eric: Second, the noun, "Korean."
Lyn: 한국어 (hangugeo).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to study."
Lyn: 공부하 (gongbuha).
Eric: And last, the phrase, "will", "am going to."
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I will study Korean quickly."
Lyn: 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.) [slow] 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.) [normal] 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: To say what will happen in the future, simply say the verb stem plus
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo).
Eric: For example with the verb-stem
Lyn: 가 (ga)
Eric: meaning "to go." If you put the phrase...
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo)
Eric: after the verb-stem and say
Lyn: 갈 거예요 (gal geoyeyo).
Eric: It means “I’ll go” or “I’m going to go.” When the verb-stem ends in a consonant, you need to add…
Lyn: 을 거예요 (eul geoyeyo).
Eric: … instead. To add extra information, you can also add an adverb in the beginning to tell when something will happen.
Lyn: 빨리 한국어 공부할 거예요. (ppalli hangugeo gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Eric: So remember to use the sentence ending
Lyn: ㄹ(을) 거예요 (l (eul) geoyeyo)
Eric: after a verb-stem to say what will happen in the future.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I will ride a bike slowly." First, the adverb, "slowly."
Lyn: 천천히 (cheoncheonhi).
Eric: Second, the noun, "bicycle."
Lyn: 자전거 (jajeongeo).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to ride."
Lyn: 타 (ta).
Eric: And last, the phrase, "will" or "am going to."
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: 천천히 자전거 탈 거예요. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.) [slow] 천천히 자전거 탈 거예요. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.) [normal] 천천히 자전거 탈 거예요. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.)
Eric: "I will ride a bike slowly."
[pause]
Lyn: 천천히 자전거 탈 거예요. (cheoncheoni jajeongeo tal geoyeyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I will eat the rice slowly"? To give you a hint, the verb-stem, "to eat" is...
Lyn: 먹 (meok). [slow] 먹 (meok). [normal] 먹 (meok).
Eric: "I will eat the rice slowly."
[pause]
Lyn: 천천히 밥 먹을 거예요. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.) [slow] 천천히 밥 먹을 거예요. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.) [normal] 천천히 밥 먹을 거예요. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: 천천히 밥 먹을 거예요. (cheoncheonhi bap meogeul geoyeyo.)
