INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 17. Using the Verb "To like."
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for discussing likes.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I like studying."
Lyn: 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Lyn: [slow] 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Eric: The pattern for discussing likes has 3 elements. First, the noun, "studying."
Lyn: 공부하는 것 (gongbuhaneun geot).
Eric: Second, the object marking particle.
Lyn: 을 (eul).
Eric: Third, the verb, "to like."
Lyn: 좋아해요 (joahaeyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I like studying."
Lyn: 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [slow] 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [normal] 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Eric: Use the noun plus the object marking particle, plus the verb pattern when discussing likes. To nominalize verbs such as "studying," you just need to take the verb stem and add 는 것 (-neun geot) as we made…
Lyn: 공부하는 것 (gongbuhaneun geot)
Eric: meaning “studying.” That way, you can say sentences such as "I like studying."
Lyn: 공부하는 것을 좋아해요. (gongbuhaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Eric: So remember that to discuss likes, simply say what you like plus the object marking particle, plus the verb meaning "like.”
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I like exercising." First, the noun, "exercising."
Lyn: 운동하는 것 (undonghaneun geot).
Eric: Second, the object marking particle.
Lyn: 을 (eul).
Eric: Third, the verb, "to like."
Lyn: 좋아해요 (joahaeyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: 운동하는 것을 좋아해요. (undonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [slow] 운동하는 것을 좋아해요. (undonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [normal] 운동하는 것을 좋아해요. (undonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Eric: "I like exercising."

Lyn: 운동하는 것을 좋아해요. (undonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I like swimming"? To give you a hint, the noun, “swimming" is...
Lyn: 수영하는 것 (suyeonghaneun geot). [slow] 수영하는 것 (suyeonghaneun geot). [normal] 수영하는 것 (suyeonghaneun geot).
Eric: "I like swimming."

Lyn: 수영하는 것을 좋아해요. (Suyeonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [slow] 수영하는 것을 좋아해요. (Suyeonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.) [normal] 수영하는 것을 좋아해요. (Suyeonghaneun geoseul joahaeyo.)
