INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 13. Asking for a Reason.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking for a reason.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "Why are you late?"
Lyn: 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?)
Lyn: [slow] 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?)
Eric: The pattern for asking for a reason has 3 elements. First, the adverb, "why."
Lyn: 왜 (wae).
Eric: Second, the verb stem meaning "to be late."
Lyn: 늦 (neut).
Eric: Third, the sentence ending which marks the verb as being in the past tense.
Lyn: 었어요 (eosseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "Why are you late?"
Lyn: 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?) [slow] 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?) [normal] 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?)
Eric: You can start the sentence with the adverb "why." Then, say the verb-stem. After the verb-stem, make sure to add the sentence ending which makes a verb into the past tense. For example, we had…
Lyn: 었어요. (eoseoyo)
Eric: ...in the example.
Lyn: 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?)
Eric: So remember that to ask for a reason, simply say the adverb "why" at the beginning of the sentence, and the verb in the past tense.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Why did you cry?" First, the adverb, "why."
Lyn: 왜 (wae).
Eric: Second, the verb stem, "to cry."
Lyn: 울 (ul).
Eric: Third, the sentence ending making the verb into the past-tense.
Lyn: 었어요 (eosseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: 왜 울었어요? (wae ureosseoyo?) [slow] 왜 울었어요? (wae ureosseoyo?) [normal] 왜 울었어요? (wae ureosseoyo?)
Eric: "Why did you cry?"
[pause]
Lyn: 왜 울었어요? (wae ureosseoyo?)
Eric: How do you say - "Why did you laugh?" To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to laugh" is...
Lyn: 웃 (ut). [slow] 웃 (ut). [normal] 웃 (ut).
Eric: "Why did you laugh?"
[pause]
Lyn: 왜 웃었어요? (wae useosseoyo?) [slow] 왜 웃었어요? (wae useosseoyo?) [normal] 왜 웃었어요? (wae useosseoyo?)
[pause]
Lyn: 왜 웃었어요? (wae useosseoyo?)

Outro

Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for asking for a reason, as in...
Lyn: 왜 늦었어요? (wae neujeosseoyo?)
Eric: meaning "Why are you late?"
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on KoreanClass101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
Lyn: 그럼 다음 시간에 만나요! (Geureom daeum sigane mannayo!)
