| Tim: Yes. In Korean, the grammar point is verb stem plus 느라고. |
| Debbie: Okay where does this conversation take place? |

| Debbie: Why did 철수 say 왜 이렇게 귀가 간지럽지? Why are my ears itchy in the conversation? |
| Tim: 아...그거요? 한국말에요 when we think someone is saying something bad about us, we say 귀가 간지럽다 my ears are itchy. |
| Debbie: 예? 귀가 간지럽다. My ears are itchy means that it seems like somebody is saying something bad about us? |
| Tim: Umm… |
| Debbie: That’s an interesting expression. |
| Tim: 근데 데비 씨, 어젯밤에요... By the way, Debbie, last night |
| Debbie: 예, 팀 씨. |
| Tim: 귀가 엄청 간지러웠거든요. My ears were so itchy. |

| Debbie: Tim, 씨름 means wrestling, right? |
| Tim: Yes. |
| Debbie: So does 무엇무엇하고 씨름하다 mean to wrestle with? |
| Tim: Yes. That’s the literal meaning but |
| Debbie: But |
| Tim: In today’s dialogue, Tim said 차하고 씨름 좀 하느라고. What does that literally mean? |
| Debbie: Because I was wrestling with my car. Wrestling with my car? No one would wrestle with a car. |
| Tim: Right. So then, what would be a better way to say it, Debbie? |
| Debbie: To have trouble with my car. |
| Tim: 딩동댕! 뭐뭐하고 씨름하다 often means to struggle or have trouble with something or someone. For example, 차하고 씨름하다 means |
| Debbie: Ah I struggled with my car or I had trouble with my car. |

| Debbie: I see. Well how would you use it in a situation where you are taking an exam at school and you are struggling with a question. |
| Tim: Umm a question is 문제 and to struggle with is 뭐뭐하고 씨름하다. So it would be 문제하고 씨름하다. |
| Debbie: Got it. 문제하고 씨름하다 to struggle with a question. What if your computer is broken? Let’s say you’ve been trying to fix it for hours. Can we also use 씨름하다 to wrestle with to describe that situation? |
| Tim: Yes, 컴퓨터하고 씨름하다 to have trouble with my computer. |
| Debbie: That’s a very interesting expression. |
| Tim: Isn’t it? |

| Tim: Yes. 한국어로 뭐뭐느라고. |
| Debbie: This expression 느라고 is often used when trying to explain the cause of an action, an outcome or a situation that is unexpected. Tim, can you tell us the formation of this expression? |
| Tim: 알겠습니다. Okay. Its formation is verb stem plus 느라고. |
| Debbie: Can you show us one? |
| Tim: Sure. For example, to do is 하다. 하 is the verb stem. So 하 plus 느라고 becomes 하느라고 and it means because I was busy doing something. |
| Debbie: Here is an example. 팀은 제 전화를 받을 수 없었습니다. Tim couldn’t answer my phone call. 왜냐하면 because... Tim, tell me why. |
| Tim: 음...왜냐하면요 because 무엇을 하느라고 바빴거든요. Because I was busy doing something. |
| Debbie: No Tim, you didn’t do anything but sleep. |
| Tim: Yes. 잠을 자느라고 바빴어요. Because I was busy sleeping. |
| Debbie: 잠자느라고? |
| Tim: Yes. |
| Debbie: Because you are busy sleeping. |
| Tim: Umm.. |
| Debbie: Tim, can you break the phrase down for us? |
| Tim: Sure. To sleep is 자다. 자 is the verb stem. Therefore 자 plus 느라고 becomes 자느라고 and it means |
| Debbie: Because I was busy sleeping. |
| Tim: Yes. 자느라고 바빴어요. |
| Debbie: Okay Tim, why don’t we practice making some sentences together with the listeners. |
| Tim: 좋은 생각입니다. Good idea. |
| Debbie: Okay then let’s try the first one with the verb to eat. |
| Tim: To eat is 먹다. What’s the verb stem of 먹다, Debbie? |
| Debbie: 먹. |
| Tim: Umm yes then, |
| Debbie: 먹 plus 느라고 is 먹느라고 meaning |
| Tim: Because I was busy eating. |
| Debbie: This time, let’s use the verb to study. |
| Tim: To study is 공부하다. What’s the verb stem, Debbie? |
| Debbie: 공부하. |
| Tim: Yes then |
| Debbie: 공부하 plus 느라고. So it becomes 공부하느라고 meaning because I was busy studying. |
| Tim:딩동댕! Can you come up with a sentence using 공부하느라고? |
| Debbie: I forgot to eat because I was busy studying Korean. |
| Tim: Good. 한국어를 공부하느라고 밥 먹는 것도 까먹었어요. 에이, 여러분 거짓말이에요. That’s a lie. 데비 씨, 정말로 밥 먹는 거 까먹었어요? Did you really forget to eat? |
| Debbie: 왜요? 그럼 팀은요? Why? What about you, Tim? |
| Tim: 예? 저는 뭐요? Yes, what about me? |
| Debbie: Well Tim sometimes forgets to sleep because he is always busy eating. |
| Tim: What! 항상 먹느라고 가끔 자는 것도 까먹는다고요? Oh! |
| Debbie: That’s why you sleep all day long during the weekends. |
| Tim: Umm that makes sense. |
| Debbie: Okay last one. What about to play? |
| Tim: Umm to play is 놀다. What’s the verb stem of 놀다, Debbie? |
| Debbie: The verb stem of 놀다 is 놀. However, this one is little tricky. Listeners, if the verb stem ends in a ㄹ 받침 like 놀 then we have to remove the ㄹ 받침. So 놀 becomes 노 and then we attach 느라고. |
| Tim: Yes listeners, 노 plus 느라고 becomes 노느라고 which is because I was busy playing. |
| Debbie: Umm what about the verb to push 밀다? |
| Tim: Umm good. The same rule applies here. Its verb stem is 밀 but |
| Debbie: When you attach 느라고 you remove the ㄹ 받침. So 밀 becomes 미. |
| Tim: Yes. So it becomes 미느라고 which is because I was busy pushing. |
| Debbie: Got it. 근데요, 팀 by the way Tim, why couldn’t you come into the office yesterday? |
| Tim: Because I was busy playing. 노느라고 바빠서요. 죄송합니다. |
