INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 현우입니다. How Did That Happen?
Mihyeon: 네? 무슨 일이에요? 무슨 일 있었어요?
Hyunwoo: Oh nothing happened to me but something seems to have happened to the daughter in today’s dialogue but before we go into the dialogue, 미현씨 what’s the focus of today’s lesson?
Mihyeon: 네, 오늘은 뭐뭐 하다가를 배울 거예요.
Hyunwoo: 네. Something, something plus verb stem plus 다가 and this grammatical structure is used to describe a sequence of actions. So pay attention to this verb ending 다가 while you listen to the dialogue.
Mihyeon: 네. 그럼 오늘 대화 빨리 들어 봐요. 오늘은 아빠와 딸의 마지막 대화죠?
Hyunwoo: 네. Today’s dialogue is the third and the last part of the conversation between the father and the daughter 아빠와 딸. So here you go.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
(1)아빠: 너 이마가 왜 그래? 다쳤어?
(1)Father: What's with your forehead? Did you get hurt?
(2)딸: 아... 아니에요. 그냥 조금 다쳤어요.
(2)Daughter: Oh... no. It's only a little scratch.
(3)아빠: 왜 그래? 뭐 하다가 다쳤어?
(3)Father: What happened? What did you do to get hurt?
(4)딸: 네? 아... 오토바이 타다가…
(4)Daughter: Huh? Oh… I was just riding a motorcycle...
(5)아빠: 오... 오토바이?!
(5)Father: Mo..Motorcycle?!
(6)딸: 네. 달리다가 넘어졌어요. 경찰차가 쫓아오잖아요.
(6)Daughter: Yup. I was speeding, and I fell. The police were after me.
(7)아빠: 뭐라고? 경찰차? 오토바이? 달려?
(7)Father: What? Police? Motorcycle? Speed?
(8)딸: 괜찮아요. 그래도 많이 안 다쳤어요.
(8)Daughter: It's all right. I didn't get hurt much.
(9)아빠: 그래서, 경찰은?
(9)Father: So, what about the police?
(10)딸: 경찰은 쫓아 오다가 멈췄어요. 다른 일이 생겼나 봐요.
(10)Daughter: They were after me but stopped. I think they had somewhere else to go.
(11)아빠: 그래…
(11)Father: I see...
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Mihyeon: 아, 지난 시간에 우리가 착한 딸이라고 말했는데요. 경찰차가 쫓아오고 오토바이 타고 또 넘어지고 아...
Hyunwoo: She doesn’t seem to be a very typical girl. 근데 오늘 재미있는 단어들이 많이 나왔어요. So let’s look at today’s vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: 첫 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 타다
Hyunwoo: 타다 To ride
Mihyeon: 타다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 타다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Then how do you say to ride a motorcycle?
Mihyeon: 오토바이를 타다
Hyunwoo: Yeah the daughter was 오토바이를 타고 있었죠? And how do you say, I can ride a motorcycle?
Mihyeon: 오토바이를 탈 수 있어요.
Hyunwoo: 탈 수 있어요.
Mihyeon: 현우씨
Hyunwoo: 네?
Mihyeon: 오토바이를 탈 수 있어요?
Hyunwoo: 탈 수는 있어요. I can but I don’t. 안 타요. I don’t have one and I don’t particularly like to. 별로 타는 거 좋아하지 않아요.
Mihyeon: 네, 좀 위험해요.
Hyunwoo: 위험해요. It’s dangerous. What was the word again?
Mihyeon: 위험해요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah 위험하다, 위험해요. Yeah it is dangerous especially in Korea.
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Okay 그리고 두 번째 단어는?
Mihyeon: 넘어지다
Hyunwoo: To fall down, to fall over.
Mihyeon: 넘어지다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 넘어지다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 네, 미현씨 when you hear the word 넘어지다, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind?
Mihyeon: 음...저는 넘어지다라는 말을 들으면 제일 먼저 겨울에 눈이 와서 길이 미끄러울 때 그때 넘어진다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah I think I know what you mean like when the road is slippery and it’s difficult to walk on the snow, so you fall over really easily.
Mihyeon: 네. 그래서 가끔씩 넘어져요.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 특히 겨울에 계단 stairs 조심해야 돼요. 계단 정말 조심해야 되는데 you have to be especially careful with the stairs in the winter. 넘어지면 다치니까 조심하세요, 여러분. 그리고 그 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 쫓다
Hyunwoo: To chase
Mihyeon: 쫓다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 쫓다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And please watch out for the pronunciation of this word. It has the consonant ㅊ at the end of the verb stem and this word is often used together with the verbs 오다 and 가다 depending on the direction. So for example, how do you say a stalker is following me.
Mihyeon: 스토커가 쫓아와요.
Hyunwoo: And how about let’s chase Hyunwoo?
Mihyeon: 현우씨를 쫓아갑시다.
Hyunwoo: Okay 따라오지 마세요.
Mihyeon: 왜 쫓아가죠?
Hyunwoo: No 미현씨 돈은 가져갔나 봐요.
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: Okay 다음 단어는요?
Mihyeon: 경찰
Hyunwoo: The police.
Mihyeon: 경찰 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 경찰 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And the word 경찰차 was also used in this dialogue and it means a police car. 그러면 다음 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 멈추다
Hyunwoo: To stop or to make something stop.
Mihyeon: 멈추다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 멈추다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Yeah you can use 멈추다 for a lot of things. What are some examples?
Mihyeon: 걸음을 멈추다, 차를 멈추다, 아니면 시간을 멈추다.
Hyunwoo: 네. Yeah it would be interesting if you could stop the time 시간을 멈출 수 있으면 정말 재밌겠죠? But I can only stop the clock.
Mihyeon: 어, 어떻게요?
Hyunwoo: 그냥 배터리를 빼요. I just take out the battery.
Mihyeon: 아, 뭐예요. 오늘도 현우씨 너무 재미없어요.
Hyunwoo: 그러면 좀 더 재미있는 거 할까요? Grammar point 어때요?
Mihyeon: 음...뭐 현우씨보다는 재밌을 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. On to the grammar point.
Mihyeon: 네.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: Today’s grammar point is
Mihyeon: 다가
Hyunwoo: 다가 is a grammatical structure that expresses the meaning of while doing something or I was doing something when. So this structure shows what kind of action was previously taking place when the next one happened and it often has the nuance that the previous action is not completely over yet. So you take the verb stem and add 다가, 예를 들어서 what’s to walk?
Mihyeon: 걷다
Hyunwoo: 걷다. And you are walking when or while walking.
Mihyeon: 걷다가. 걷다가 넘어졌어요.
Hyunwoo: You were walking and you fell.
Mihyeon: 네, 눈이 와서 미끄러울 때.
Hyunwoo: 네, 조심하세요. 그럼 이 다가, 다가가 오늘의 대화에서는 어떻게 나왔죠? How was it used in today’s dialogue?
Mihyeon: 아빠가 뭐 하다가 다쳤어?라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the father said, what did you do to get hurt?
Mihyeon: 딸이 오토바이 타다가...라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the 딸 daughter said, I was just riding a motorcycle and
Mihyeon: 딸이 달리다가 넘어졌어요라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the daughter said, yup, I was speeding and I fell.
Mihyeon: 딸이 경찰은 쫓아 오다가 멈췄어요라고 했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah the daughter also said, oh the police, they were after me but they stopped. Yeah so when something happened and you want to ask how did it happen or what did you do to make it happen, in Korean, it’s often asked this way.
Mihyeon: 어쩌다가?
Hyunwoo: Or
Mihyeon: 뭐 하다가?
Hyunwoo: Yeah so they literally mean what were you doing when it happened and for example, my sister sprained her ankle really badly a few months ago and when I heard about it, the first thing that came out of my mouth was 뭐 하다가? what did you do, what were you doing?
Mihyeon: 네. 저도 아마 똑같은 질문을 할 거 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 그렇죠?
Mihyeon: 네.
Hyunwoo: 그럼 give us a few example sentences please.
Mihyeon: 흠...자다가 일어났어요.
Hyunwoo: I was asleep and I got up and this sounds weird because if you wake up, it’s obvious that you were sleeping but we say this often to mean I just woke up.
Mihyeon: 공부하다가 잠들었어요.
Hyunwoo: I was studying and I fell asleep.
Mihyeon: 저는 가끔 티비 보다가 잠들어요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 저는 가끔씩 책 읽다가 잠들 때 있어요.
Mihyeon: 저는 전혀 아닌데요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Well, okay I guess that’s it for today. 네, 다음 주에 만나요. 안녕히 계세요.
