INTRODUCTION
Mihyeon: 안녕하세요. 미현입니다.
Hyunwoo: Hello everyone. I am Hyun woo.
Junsu: Hi. I am Junsu.
Hyunwoo: Welcome to KoreanClass101.com’s Lower intermediate lesson #2. I Think I Will. Do you travel overseas often?
Junsu: I can’t say often because I only traveled overseas when I was young.
Hyunwoo: Where did you go?
Junsu: Well I stayed at Malaysia and Singapore and Indonesia and a couple of places in Europe.
Hyunwoo: Wow! That’s a lot.
Mihyeon: 우와, 진짜 많다!
Hyunwoo: 미현 씨는 해외여행 자주 가세요?
Mihyeon: 저는 어렸을 때 많이 못 가 봤는데 대학생 때 몇 군데 가 봤어요.
Hyunwoo: So what countries have you been to?
Mihyeon: 중국
Junsu: China.
Mihyeon: 싱가폴
Junsu: Singapore.
Mihyeon: 인도네시아
Junsu: Indonesia.
Mihyeon: 네, 여기 세 군데요.
Hyunwoo: Whoa! I haven’t been to Singapore and Indonesia. I would really love to go 정말 가고 싶은데 아직 못 가 봤어요. 그럼 두 사람 다 인도네시아, 싱가폴 가 봤네요? Have you been to 중국 China?
Junsu: Nope. I haven’t been there.
Hyunwoo: 네, 꼭 가 보세요. 정말 좋아요.
Mihyeon: 현우씨는요?
Hyunwoo: 저요? Where have I traveled? Well I’ve been to Europe twice for traveling and I have been to Japan twice for traveling and I have been to China twice for traveling. Well that’s a lot. 그런데 오래 못 있었어요. I couldn’t stay in one place for a long time. I only stayed for like two months maximum. That was a really good experience for me. Well anyway, when you travel overseas 해외여행을 할 때 기념품을 많이 사 오세요?
Junsu: Souvenirs nah I don’t buy any.
Hyunwoo: Really 진짜요?
Mihyeon: 저도요. 저도 잘 안 사요.
Junsu: Yeah I only buy meaningful things like chocolates.
Mihyeon: 저는 그냥 안 사요.
Hyunwoo: You don’t even buy meaningful things either but I am not sure if chocolates are meaningful things but any way, I mean in particular but yeah 기념품 안 사요? 전혀?
Junsu: I guess sometimes if they are really pretty.
Hyunwoo: Okay I see but you know, in many cases 많은 경우에 있어서 기념품은 나를 위해서 사는 것이 아니라 기념품 is not for yourself but for friends and family right?
Mihyeon: 네, 맞아요. 근데 친구들이 많잖아요. 누구한테는 주고 누구한테는 안 주고 그렇게 할 수 없어서 그냥 안 사요.
Hyunwoo: Well that’s smart.
Mihyeon: 똑똑하죠?
Hyunwoo: Yeah you can call it smart or just careless I don’t know. I just….
Mihyeon: Careless...what?
Hyunwoo: 그런데 you can’t buy souvenirs for everyone. So you just choose not to buy anything for anybody 좋아요 그런데 but in this dialogue, the man seems to be a nicer person than Mihyeon. He is agreeing to buy souvenirs for his son.
Junsu: Although she is so mean, she will buy souvenirs too someday which is when she has a son maybe.
Hyunwoo: I hope so.
Mihyeon: 글쎄요. 근데 남자친구한테는 줄 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Oh now that’s obligation. Well anyway, let’s get into today’s dialogue. Today we have a continued dialogue from the last lesson, our first lesson in this lower intermediate series and what happened in the last conversation Mihyeon?
Mihyeon: 아내가 남편한테 친구를 만나려고 한다고 이야기했는데 남편이 그래 잘 만나고 오라고 이야기했어요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. If you remember, we learned how to say, you are about to do something, you are planning to do something which is
Junsu: 려고 하다.
Hyunwoo: Yes and in today’s dialogue, what are they talking about?
Mihyeon: 오늘은 남편이 출장을 가는 이야기예요.
Hyunwoo: What is 출장?
Junsu: 출장 means business trip. So in this conversation, the husband is talking about going on a business trip and the wife mentions some souvenirs for her son.
Hyunwoo: So Junsu what are we going to learn today?
Junsu: We are going to learn about how to say you think you are going to do something or you think something is going to happen. So it means something that you are not 100% sure of.
Hyunwoo: Okay. Let’s listen in.
DIALOGUE
(1)Husband: Honey, did you have a nice dinner with your friend?
(2)여보: 네, 맛있었어요. 고마워요.
(2)Wife: Yes, it was delicious. Thanks.
(3)남편: 괜찮아. 여보, 나 다음 달에 출장 갈 것 같아.
(3)Husband: No problem. Honey, I think I'm going on a business trip next month.
(4)아내: 그래요? 어디로요?
(4)Wife: Oh? Where to?
(5)남편: 응. 아마 캐나다로 갈 것 같아.
(5)Husband: I think I'm probably going to go to Canada.
(6)아내: 며칠 동안 가세요?
(6)Wife: For how many days?
(7)남편: 글쎄... 1주일 정도 갈 것 같아.
(7)Husband: I'm not sure... I think for about a week.
(8)아내: 네, 알겠어요. 이번에는 성주 기념품 잊지 마세요. 요즘에 공부 때문에 스트레스 많이 받는 것 같아요.
(8)Wife: Okay. This time, don't forget a souvenir for Seongju. I think he's getting stressed out because of his studies.
(9)남편: 아, 그래. 알았어. 요즘에 성주는 공부 열심히 하고 있어?
(9)Husband: Ah, okay. Is he studying hard these days?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Well Seongju has a very nice father.
Junsu: Yeah a lot nicer than Mihyeon right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah right.
Mihyeon: 왜 나랑 비교해요?
Hyunwoo: No we are not comparing anybody with you but just he is a nice person right? Okay so let’s get into today’s vocabulary words.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: So Mihyeon what’s the first word 첫 번째 단어는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 네. 첫 번째 단어, 출장.
Junsu: 출장
Mihyeon: 출장 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 출장 [natural native speed] 일 때문에 가는 여행.
Junsu: Yeah so it means business trip.
Hyunwoo: 네. A trip that you go for the sake of business or work. Can you give us some examples Mihyeon?
Mihyeon: 나 다음 주 일요일에 출장 가.
Junsu: I am going on a business trip next Sunday.
Mihyeon: 현우 씨는 지금 출장 중이에요.
Junsu: Hyunwoo is on a business trip right now.
Mihyeon: 현우 씨는 해외출장을 갔어요.
Junsu: Hyunwoo went on a business trip overseas.
Hyunwoo: And I am back from the business trip.
Junsu: So early.
Hyunwoo: 제가 좀 빨라요. 다음 단어는 뭐죠?
Mihyeon: 아마
Junsu: 아마
Mihyeon: 아마 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 아마 [natural native speed]
Junsu: What does this word mean?
Mihyeon: 확실하지 않지만 가능성이 있다.
Junsu: Yeah so it means you are not sure but there is a possibility. So it means maybe or even probably.
Hyunwoo: 네. 미현씨, 예를 좀 들어 주시겠어요?
Mihyeon: 아마 내일 비가 올 거야.
Junsu: It’s probably going to rain tomorrow.
Mihyeon: 현우는 아마 모를 걸.
Junsu: Hyunwoo probably doesn’t know.
Mihyeon: 출장 언제 가? 아마 내일.
Junsu: When is your business trip? Probably tomorrow.
Hyunwoo: And as you have noticed in one of the example sentences that Mihyeon gave, 아마 is often used together with 을 것 같다 but we are going to cover that in our grammar point and 그 다음 단어는 뭐죠?
Mihyeon: 글쎄
Junsu: 글쎄
Mihyeon: 글쎄 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 글쎄 [natural native speed]
Junsu: What does this word mean Mihyeon?
Mihyeon: 무슨 말을 할지 잘 모르겠을 때 생각하면서 이 말을 해요. 음...글쎄.
Junsu: When you are not sure what to say, you use this word while you are thinking.
Hyunwoo: 글쎄요. 글쎄. 예를 좀 들어 주시겠어요?
Mihyeon: 오늘 뭐 먹을까요?
Hyunwoo: 글쎄요.
Mihyeon: 비빔밥 먹을까요?
Hyunwoo: 글쎄요.
Mihyeon: 먹고 싶은 게 없어요?
Hyunwoo: 글쎄요.
Mihyeon: 현우씨, 생각만 하지 말고 결정을 하세요 결정을.
Junsu: Hyunwoo, stop thinking and make a decision.
Hyunwoo: 글쎄...
Mihyeon: 어우 답답해요.
Hyunwoo: Okay sorry. 다음 단어로 넘어가죠. 다음 단어는 뭐죠?
Mihyeon: 요즘
Junsu: 요즘
Mihyeon: 요즘 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 요즘 [natural native speed]
Junsu: What does this word mean?
Mihyeon: 얼마 전부터 지금까지.
Junsu: From a while ago till now. So it means these days or recently.
Hyunwoo: 미현씨, 요즘에 뭐 해요?
Mihyeon: 요즘에 운동해요.
Hyunwoo: 아 그래요? 요즘 운동 많이 하세요? You work out a lot these days? 그러면 요즘 영화도 많이 보세요?
Mihyeon: 네. 영화도 자주 봐요.
Hyunwoo: And what else do you do a lot 요즘?
Mihyeon: 요즘 친구 결혼식에 많이 가요.
Hyunwoo: You are going to a lot of weddings of your friends these days. How nice! 자, 그럼 다음 단어 보실까요?
Mihyeon: 기념품
Junsu: 기념품
Mihyeon: 기념품 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 기념품 [natural native speed]
Junsu: 무슨 뜻이에요?
Mihyeon: 기념품은 여행을 갔을 때 다른 사람들이나 나를 위해서 사는 물건이에요.
Junsu: 기념품 is something that you buy when you are on a trip for your friends or your family or yourself which in English is souvenir.
Hyunwoo: Yeah we talked a lot about 기념품 souvenirs in the beginning of this lesson. So let’s go right into today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: 미현 씨, 오늘의 grammar point는 뭐예요?
Mihyeon: 을 것 같다
Hyunwoo: 을 것 같다. So Junsu what does this mean?
Junsu: Yeah it means you think you are going to do something or you think something is going to happen. Something that you are not 100% sure of.
Hyunwoo: That’s right and that’s why this grammar pattern is often used together with the word 아마 maybe, probably. So Junsu how is this grammar pattern used? How is it constructed?
Junsu: You take the verb stem and add ㄹ 것 같다 or 을 것 같다 depending on whether the verb stem ends in a consonant or a vowel.
Hyunwoo: Yeah it’s very simple. So how was it used in today’s dialogue Mihyeon?
Mihyeon: 남편이 이야기했어요. 나 다음 달에 출장 갈 것 같아.
Junsu: The husband told the wife, I think I am going to go on a business trip next month.
Mihyeon: 캐나다로 갈 것 같아.
Junsu: I think I am going to go to Canada.
Mihyeon: 1주일 정도 갈 것 같아.
Junsu: I think it’s going to be for a week.
Hyunwoo: Yeah this is very useful and Koreans tend to use this 같다 very often like almost every day, several times a day and when you are talking about the future and you are not sure, you don’t want to be too sure about what you are going to do or something that’s going to take place, you can use this grammar pattern. So Mihyeon, could you give us some more examples?
Mihyeon: 나 다음 달에 결혼할 것 같아.
Hyunwoo: Well she doesn’t sound too happy about it but what does it mean?
Junsu: I think I am going to get married next month.
Hyunwoo: Too bad but actually I should say 축하합니다 congratulations but she didn’t sound too happy and another example
Mihyeon: 나 머리가 터질 것 같아.
Junsu: I think my head is going to explode.
Hyunwoo: Why?
Mihyeon: 아, 그냥 예문이에요. 머리 아플 때 자주 이렇게 말해요.
Junsu: No I think it’s because she has to get married soon.
Hyunwoo: Yeah that makes sense. 말 되네요. Could you give us one more example?
Mihyeon: 나 그 오빠 다시 만날 것 같아.
Junsu: Wait! I don’t want to translate this. Okay she said, I think I am going to meet him again.
Hyunwoo: Okay, they are just sample sentences but you think you are going to get married next month and you think your head is going to explode and you think you are going to meet him – like him, someone else again. Okay not very educational.
Mihyeon: 그냥 예문이에요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Ah okay you say so and okay I think that’s going to wrap up today’s lesson. I hope you enjoyed this lesson Junsu?
Junsu: Yeah I did especially the truth about Mihyeon.
Hyunwoo: Yeah truth being revealed.
Mihyeon: 다시 만날 거예요. 결혼은 안 할 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. I am not sure if its bad news or good news for her but anyway, stop by KoreanClass101.com and check out the PDF. We have a lot more detailed information on this grammar point and if you are enjoying studying Korean with us and you want to improve the way you sound in Korean even further, you can check out our learning center where we have the voice recording tool. Junsu: 웹사이트에서 만나요.
Mihyeon: 나중에 또 봐요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 저희는 다음 주에 돌아오겠습니다. 안녕히 계세요.
Junsu: Bye.

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for posting. You can use both phrases but they have a slightly different meaning.

이건 못 만질 것 같아.-->This implies that while you cannot touch 'this', you probably could touch something else. Also here 'this' is the topic of the sentence.

이걸 못 만질 것 같아.-->This states that you cannot touch 'this' but doesn't imply that you cannot touch something else. Here 'this' is the object of a sentence.

And to answer your other question, 것 같아 is pronounced as 걷 가타.

Lyn

Hello. I wonder what is the correct way to say "I think we can't touch this."

이건 못 만질 것 같아.

Or

이걸 못 만질 것 같아.

And by the way do we pronounce 것 같아 like 거 까 타?

Thank you!
