Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. This week’s theme is famous Korean food. Okay I am already excited about this theme. So let’s see what we have.
김치 (gimchi) is “kimchi” like the – I think you know kimchi, right? If you know about the kimchi, it’s kind of cabbage sauced with spicy red pepper sauce. So it’s very spicy but there are various like different types of kimchi like one with the cucumber, the other one with like soup style or like. So you can say 한국에는 다양한 종류의 김치가 있습니다. (Gangugeneun dayanghan jongnyuui gimchiga itsseumnida.) meaning “In Korea, there are various types of kimchi.”
Okay now we have 비빔밥 (bibimbap) meaning “mixed rice with vegetables.” With that word, I can say 대한항공을 타면 비빔밥을 먹을 수 있습니다. (Daehanhanggongeul tamyeon bibimbabeul meogeul su itsseumnida.) meaning “If you fly on Korean Airlines, then you can have bibimbap.” They have bibimbap as an in-flight meal. So if you want to try Korean foods on the way to Korea, then you can say Korean Airlines’ bibimbap meal.
Okay now we have 불고기 (bulgogi). Bulgogi is the seasoned beef with soy sauce. You can say 비빔밥 위에 불고기를 놓으면 맛있습니다. (Bibimbap wie bulgogireul noeumyeon masitsseumnida.) “If you put bulgogi on the top of bibimbap, that’s very delicious.” If you haven’t tried it, try it as it will be very nice.
Okay now we have 된장찌개 (doenjang jjigae) meaning “bean paste stew.” 된장 (doenjang) is for bean paste and 찌개 (jjigae) is stew. So you can find some 김치찌개 (gimchijjigae) like “kimchi stew” in different types of stew, 찌개 (jjigae) in Korea. So with that word, you can say 한국에서는 아침식사로 된장찌개와 밥을 먹습니다. (Hangugeseoneun achimsiksaro doenjangjjigaewa babeul meoksseumnida.) which means “In Korea as a breakfast, they have bean paste stew and rice.” Sometimes you can find kimchi stew or different types of stew but there should be at least one stew and one rice as a breakfast in Korea.
Okay now we have 떡볶이 (tteokbokki). That’s my favorite food. It means “seasoned rice cake.” So with that word, you can say 포장마차에서 먹는 떡볶이는 정말 맛있습니다. (Pojangmachaeseo meongneun tteokbokkineun jeongmal masitsseumnida.) which means “The seasoned rice cake or 떡복이 (tteokbokki) that you have on street market is very delicious. So try it, it’s very cheap, it just costs about USD2 for one dish. So you can try it and that will be very nice and it is very spicy.
Okay that’s all for this week. I hope you enjoyed all the words that we introduced today and hope you have some Korean foods that we introduced this week. I hope to see you next week. Have a nice day. 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
