Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Okay let’s see what we have this week. Okay being sick in Korean.
Okay now we have 염증 (yeomjeung) meaning “infection.” Okay you can say 팔에 염증이 났어요. (Pare yeomjeungi nasseoyo.) which means “I have an infection in my arms.” So with 염증 (yeomjeung) you can use the verb 났다 (natda) which means to come out. So it literally means something like the infection was coming out from my arms, yeah. That’s close I think.
Okay and next we have 알레르기 (allereugi) which means “allergy.” Some of the important words in Korea were actually imported through Japan. So we just follow how Japanese people sometimes read imported words. So that’s why we just call allergy as 알레르기 (allereugi). So with 알레르기 (allereugi) allergy, you can say 저는 땅콩 알레르기가 있어요. (Jeoneun ttangkong allereugiga isseoyo.) to mean “I have peanut allergy.” If you have milk allergy, you can say 저는 우유 알레르기가 있어요. (Jeoneun uyu allereugiga isseoyo.) So you can just replace 땅콩 (ttangkong) or 우유 (uyu) with the other things that you are allergic to, then people understand about it.
Okay and next we have 두통 (dutong) which means “headache.” 두 (du) is “head” and 통 (tong) is “sick” or “ache.” So it literally means 두통 (dutong) “headache.” 어제 술을 많이 마셔서 투동에 걸렸어요. (Eoje sureul mani masyeoseo tudonge geollyeosseoyo.) which means “I drank a lot. So now I have a headache.”
Okay next we have 고열 (goyeol) means “high fever.” 고 (go) means “high” and 열 (yeol) means “fever.” So 고열 (goyeol). With this word, you can say 어제부터 고열이 있었어요. (Eojebuteo goyeori isseosseoyo.) which means “I have had high fever since yesterday.”
Okay next we have – okay that’s very familiar to me which means 숙취 (sukchwi) meaning “hangover.” 한국 사람들은 숙취가 있을 때, 숙취 해소 음료수를 마신다. (Hanguk saramdeureun sukchwiga iseul ttae, sukchwi haeso eumnyosureul masinda.) That means “Korean people drink hangover drinks when they have hangover.” And you hear this word a lot if you go to Korea because people in Korea drink a lot, I mean a lot.
Okay so that’s all the words that we have for this week. Thank you for watching. 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
