Jaehwi: I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Let’s see what we have for this week. Okay medicine, okay.
기침약 (gichimyak) which means “cough syrup.” 기침 (gichim) is something like you know “coughing” and the 약 (yak) means “medicine.” Okay with that word, you can say 조카가 감기에 걸려서 기침약을 먹기 시작했습니다. (Jokaga gamgie geollyeoseo gichimyageul meokgi sijakaetsseumnida.) which means “My nephew got a cold, so he started getting cough syrup.”
Okay next we have 백신 (baeksin) which means “vaccine.” There is no v sound in Korean, so that’s why we say 백신 (baeksin). With the vaccine... I can say 에볼라 바이러스를 치료할 수 있는 백신이 나왔습니다. (Ebolla baireoseureul chiryohal su inneun baeksini nawatsseumnida.) which means “The vaccine that can cure the Ebola virus just came out.”
Okay next we have 아스피린 (aseupirin) which means “aspirin.” So you can say 저는 머리가 아플 때에는 아스피린을 먹습니다. (Jeoneun meoriga apeul ttaeeneun aseupirineul meoksseumnida.) which means “I take aspirin when I have a headache.”
약 (yak) “medicine.” I think this is the keyword of this theme. If you know what you are taking but if you don’t know what it is called in Korean and you feel you have to say you are taking medicine, you can just simply say 약을 먹고 있습니다. (Yageul meokgo itsseumnida.) which means “I am taking medicine.” In Korean, when you talk about medicine, we use the verb 먹다 (meokda) which means “to eat.” So it literally means I am eating medicine.
Next we have 처방전 (cheobangjeon) which means “prescription.” 처방 (cheobang) is the verb meaning “to prescribe.” Prescription. Okay with that word, you can say 의사에게서 처방전을 받았습니다. (Uisaegeseo cheobangjeoneul badatsseumnida.) which means “I’ve got a prescription from a doctor.”
End okay, we checked the words of medicine. I hope you don’t use that in Korea but if you are feeling sick, I hope you can just remember some of them and you see it at the pharmacy or when you talk to your doctor.
