Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Okay this week’s theme is mammals. Okay let’s see what we have.
First one is 고양이 (goyangi) meaning “cat.” So in Korean, cats are crying like 냐옹 (nyaong) or 냐옹 냐옹 (nyaong nyaong) or like 냐옹 (nyaong). With that word, you can say 최근 들어서 한국 사람들은 고양이를 좋아하기 시작했습니다. (Choegeun deureoseo hanguk saramdeureun goyangireul joahagi sijakaetsseumnida.) which means “Recently Korean people started to like cats.” In the past like people thought that cats are bringing some bad luck. So they usually didn’t like cats as a pet but these days, a lot of people you know are trying to have a cat as a pet and they love it.
So next we have 소 (so) which means “cow.” Do you know what kind of sound cows make in Korean like they say 음메, 음메 (eumme, eumme). when you imitate, it has to be very tone 음메 (eumme). With that word, you can say 옛날에 소는 부의 상징이었습니다. (Yennare soneun buui sangjingieotsseumnida.) which means “In the past, cows were the symbol of richness.” If someone has a cow, that means that someone has their one farm or one field that they use cows.
All right, so next we have 돼지 (doeji) meaning “pig.” So I know in English they say oink oink. Yeah which is very cute but in Korean, the pigs make sound something like 꿀꿀 (kkulkkul). So they are like 꿀꿀 꿀꿀 (kkulkkul kkulkkul) or something like that. With that word, you can say 때때로 돼지처럼 살고 싶을 때도 있습니다. (Ttaettaero dwaejicheoreom salgo sipeul ttaedo itsseumnida.) which means “Sometimes I want to live like a pig.” Just for one week just sleep, eat, sleep, eat.
토끼 (tokki) which means “rabbit.” With that word, you can say 내 동생은 토끼 띠에 태어났습니다. (Nae dongsaengeun tokki ttie taeeonatsseumnida.) which means “My younger brother was born in the year of rabbit.” And I was born in the year of rat. So if you talk to Korean people, they should know what year they were from. So you can just you know guess their age too.
개 (gae) which means “dog.” So in Korean, we think dogs are making sounds like 멍멍 (meongmeong) or like m sound at the beginning. So 멍멍 멍멍 (meongmeong meongmeong) you know. With that word, you can say 개를 키우는 것은 생각보다 쉽지 않았습니다. (Gaereul kiuneun geoseun saenggakboda swipji anatsseumnida.) which means “It was not easy to raise a dog.” I started raising my dog when I was a kid. You know having a pet for the first time might not be easy not only for the dog. In Korean, when you talk about small dog like we use different word like saying 강아지 (gangaji). 개 (gae) is something like for a big dog or grownup dogs or something like that but we don’t have a different word for cat. We just call – we just say 고양이 (goyangi) for both kitty and cats.
End okay that’s all for this week. I will see you next week. 다음 시간에 뵙겠습니다. (Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.) Horse is something like 히힝 (hihing). We used to have tigers in mountains but not anymore.
