Do you know how to count the number of levels or ranks? Find out at the end of this video!
Hi everybody! I'm Alisha.
안녕하세요. 노경진입니다.
Welcome to Korean Counters for Beginners, where you'll learn how to count all sorts of different objects in Korean! Seonsaengnim (선생님), what counter will we learn in this lesson?
층 (cheung)
First, let's take a look at what kind of objects can be counted with the counter.
When counting the number of floors, you can use the counter...
층 (cheung)
This word literally means "layers." You can use this counter when counting the number of floors in any type of building, for example houses or regular buildings.
Okay, let's count from 1 to 10 with this counter. When you're counting floors you should use Sino-Korean numbers, which are based on Chinese characters.
일 층
이 층
삼 층
사 층
오 층
육 층
칠 층
팔 층
구 층
십 층
Although you need to use the Sino-Korean numbers when talking about floors, Korean people use the pure Korean number when saying "one more floor" or "two more floors."
한 층 더 not 일 층 더
두 층 더 not 이 층 더
세 층 더 not 삼 층 더
Okay. Now let's take a look at some sample sentences using this counter. Listen carefully to what sorts of objects can be counted with this counter.
우리 집은 육 층에 있습니다.
My home is on the 6th floor.
접수창구는 이 층에 있습니다.
The reception is on the 2nd floor.
여기는 삼 층입니다.
This floor is the 3rd floor.
Now it's time for a Quiz. I'm going to ask you a question in English. Answer the question in Korean. Are you ready? Make sure you use the right counter.
Which floor has a cinema?
영화관은 칠 층에 있습니다.
Which floor are you going to?
구 층에 가고 있습니다.
Do you know how to count the number of levels? The answer is...
This means "steps" but people also count the level of difficulty or level of proficiency with this counter.
저는 태권도 이 단입니다.
I'm level 2 in Taekwondo.
Okay, everyone. That's it for this lesson. We'll see you next time!
