Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
(1)정우: 안녕하세요.
Hyunwoo: Hi.
(2)수영: 안녕하세요. 정우 오빠 맞죠?
Hyunwoo: Hi. You're Jeongu, right?
(3)정우: 네. 맞아요. 수영이? 나 수영하는 거 정말 좋아하는데. 앗... 하하. 만나자마자 너무 썰렁했지? 진경이 친구니까 반말 해도 되지?
Hyunwoo: Yeah, that's right. Suyeong? I really like swimming...oh...haha. Sorry for saying something corny right after we meet. I don't have to use polite language with you since you're a friend of Jingyeong, right?
(4)수영: 네. 반말 해도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: No, you don't have to use polite language.
(5)정우: 진경이는 수능 끝나자마자 아르바이트 시작했는데, 너는 요즘 어떻게 지내?
Hyunwoo: Jingyeong started a part-time job right after the college entrance exam. What are you up to these days?

(7)정우: 대학생 되자마자 제일 먼저 뭐 하고 싶어?

Gyeong-eun: Um… as soon as I graduate, I wanted to start putting makeup on. 화장을 하고 싶었어요.
Hyunwoo: Just makeup? Not making boyfriends like 수영 wants to in the dialogue?
Gyeong-eun: Of course, that's one of the reasons I wanted to put makeup on. 남자친구를 만들고 싶어서 화장을 했죠.
Hyunwoo: Oh, I see the connection now. Okay let's look at what 수영 wants to do in the vocab section.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Now let’s have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are going to have a look at is,
Gyeong-eun: 썰렁하다,
Hyunwoo: to be unfunny, not funny. So, how do you call someone whose jokes are not good?
Gyeong-eun: 썰렁한 사람,
Hyunwoo: And how do you say a bad joke?
Gyeong-eun: 썰렁한 농담
Hyunwoo: Right, so what does 썰렁하다 originally mean?
Gyeong-eun: 어, 원래, '썰렁하다'는 '춥다'라는 뜻이에요. 그래서 재미없는 농담을 들으면, when you hear a bad joke, you feel cold, so we say 썰렁해요.
Hyunwoo: That’s right. You feel very cold when you hear a very unfunny joke.
Gyeong-eun: 맞아요. 그래서 제가 현우 씨한테 “썰렁해요" 이런 말 되게 많이 하잖아요, 그쵸?
Hyunwoo: 아… 그랬군요. 그래서… I thought you were just cold, haha. And the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 사귀다
Hyunwoo: “To date”, “To go steady with” / This is not only used for dating, right? It's actually used for normal friendship, too. For example how do you say "I made some friends".
Gyeong-eun: 친구를 몇 명 사귀었어요.
Hyunwoo: So, although you use the word, 사귀다, for making friends, if you say '사귀는 사람', then what does that mean?
Gyeong-eun: That means somebody that you're dating
Hyunwoo: So be careful with the word, 사귀다, and when you say, 사귀었어요, the pronunciation often changes to,
Gyeong-eun: “사겼어요”,
Hyunwoo: 사겼어요, in colloquial situations. Do you sometimes say 사귀었어요, too?
Gyeong-eun: 아니요, 절대 안 그러죠. “사겼어요”라고 말해요.
Hyunwoo: But you write “사귀었어요”, right?
Gyeong-eun: 어, 원래는 그래야 되는데 저는 그냥 “사겼어요"라고 자주 쓰는 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. The word, 사귀다, is conjugated to “사귀었어요" in the past tense, and this is the officially correct version, but a lot of people just write “사겼어요".
Gyeong-eun: 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: 네, so what's the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 느낌이 오다
Hyunwoo: Literally, the feeling comes, and in English I think you can say you 'get the feeling.' So how was it used here?
Gyeong-eun: 수영이가 정우한테 말했어요. “느낌이 왔어요!”라고.
Hyunwoo: And what she meant was something like "I could feel that we're meant to be together." Okay, so, it’s time to go to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What's today's grammar point?
Gyeong-eun: -자마자
Hyunwoo: “As soon as” / So how can you use this in a sentence? How do you say “as soon as I go”?
Gyeong-eun: 가자마자
Hyunwoo: And how about “as soon as you come”?
Gyeong-eun: 오자마자 / So you take the verb stem and add -자마자 -. It's very simple. 간단하죠?
Hyunwoo: And it is often interchangeable with -고 바로 (-go baro) or -서 바로 (-seo baro), but -자마자 (-jamaja) has a nuance of being a little more urgent and pressing. So, how was it used in today's dialog?
Gyeong-eun: 정우가 말했어요. “만나자마자 너무 썰렁했지?”
Hyunwoo: Jeongu said "Sorry for saying something so unfunny right after we met."
Gyeong-eun: 정우가 다시 말했어요. “진경이는 수능 끝나자마자 아르바이트 시작했는데, 너는 요즘 어떻게 지내?”
Hyunwoo: Jeongu also said "Jingyeong started a part-time job right after the college entrance exam. What are you up to these days?"
Gyeong-eun: 정우가 다시 말했어요. “대학생 되자마자 제일 먼저 뭐 하고 싶어?”
Hyunwoo: (Jeongu) "What do you want to do as soon as you become a college student?"
Gyeong-eun: 수영이가 말했어요. “대학교 들어가자마자 친구들 많이 사귀고 싶어요.”
Hyunwoo: (Suyeong) "As soon as I enter college, I want to make a lot of friends."
Gyeong-eun: 수영이가 사귀자고 하자마자 정우가 말했어요. “만나자마자, 너무 급한 거 아니야?”
Hyunwoo: (Jeongu) "Isn't this too quick, right after we've met?" Okay, so, shall we look at some examples?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: So, tell me, 경은 씨. How do you say, “I fell asleep as soon as I ate”?
Gyeong-eun: 제가 잘 하는 말인데요? “먹자마자 잠들었어요.”
Hyunwoo: Yeah, you always do that, right? Haha! And how do you say, “ I came here as soon as I heard the news”?
Gyeong-eun: 소식을 듣자마자 왔어요.
Hyunwoo: Okay. So 경은, what're you going to do as soon as we finish this recording? 이 녹음 끝내자마자 뭐 할 거예요?
Gyeong-eun: 녹음 끝내자마자, KoreanClass101.com 가서 코멘트 남긴 거 확인할 거예요, 하하. 그러니까 이 레슨 듣자마자, 코멘트 남기는 거 잊지 마세요.
