INTRODUCTION
Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, 최경은입니다.
Hyunwoo: Hyunwoo here. If Only You Weren’t Leaving Korea Tomorrow!
Gyeong-eun: Today, we have a continued dialogue from the lesson.
Hyunwoo: So what are we going learn how to say in Korean in this lesson? 이번 레슨에서는 뭐 배울거예요?
Gyeong-eun: 오늘은 “if it weren’t” or “only if you weren’t” 배울 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Where does this conversation take place?
Gyeong-eun: During a company dinner, 회식!
Hyunwoo: The conversation is between,
Gyeong-eun: 태훈 and his bosses. 태훈 씨랑 태훈 씨 상사들 사이의 대화예요.
Hyunwoo: Normally, 태훈 would use polite language, but he’s a bit drunk, so let’s find out what happens.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 빨리 들어봐요.
Hyunwoo: Okay, let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
과장: 태훈 씨, 오늘 신입사원 환영회가 있으니까, 이따가 재밌게 놀아보자고.
Hyunwoo: Taehun, today we’re having a welcoming party for new employees. So let's have some fun at the party later tonight!
태훈: 네, 과장님! 감사합니다!
Hyunwoo: Yes, sir. Thank you!
부장: 태훈 씨, 한 잔 해.
Hyunwoo: Taehun, let me give you a drink.
태훈: 아. 네. 근데 사실 제가 술을 잘 못 해요... 술 마시는 것만 아니면 다 잘 할 수 있습니다.
Hyunwoo: Oh, okay. But...my tolerance is kind of low...only if it's not about drinking. I can do everything else well.
부장: 태훈 씨, 그래도 직장 상사가 따라 주는 거니까, 마셔. 원 샷.
Hyunwoo: Taehun, but your boss is pouring you a glass. You should drink it. Bottoms up.
태훈: 아... 네... 크...
Hyunwoo: Oh...alright...
과장: 잘 마시네. 자. 이번엔 내가 따라 줄게. 건배. 원 샷.
Hyunwoo: See, you're good! Now this time, let me pour it for you. Cheers. Bottoms up!
태훈: 네? 이것도요? 저 정말 술을 잘 못 해요...
Hyunwoo: Huh? This one, too? I really can't drink.
과장: 그냥 마셔!
Hyunwoo: Just drink it!
태훈: 야. 김 부장! 이리 와 봐.
Hyunwoo: Hey, Mr. Kim. Come over here.
과장: 뭐? 아휴... 태훈 씨 취했어? 이러지 마. 부장님이야.
Hyunwoo: What? Taehun, are you drunk? Don't do this! He's your manager.
태훈: 너는 뭐야! 너... 과장만 아니면 내가 한 대 때렸어.
Hyunwoo: Who are you? If only you weren't my section chief, I would have given you a punch!
부장: 뭐? 과장만 아니면 때렸어? 이 봐, 태훈 씨!
Hyunwoo: What? You would have hit him only if he wasn’t your section chief? Hey, Taehun!
태훈: 넌 또 뭐야? 너도 내가 부장만 아니면...
Hyunwoo: Who is this now? You too, if only you weren't my manager...
과장: 부장님 참으세요. 아휴... 신입사원만 아니면...
Hyunwoo: Mr. Kim...please don't get upset. Argh...if only he weren't a new employee...
부장: 아휴... 사장님이 좋아하는 신입사원만 아니면, 당장 해고했을 거야.
Hyunwoo: Argh...if only you weren't the new employee that the president likes… I would have fired him right away.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Wow! 태훈 made a big mistake 정말 큰 실수를 했는데, do you think he'll be forgiven the next day? 다음 날 용서 받을 수 있을까요?
Gyeong-eun: I think he'll be okay, but when you do something like this, 사람들이 계속 이야기하잖아요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, people talk about it forever!
Gyeong-eun: But at the same time, 태훈 씨는 술을 안 마시고 싶어했는데, 상사들이 억지로 줬잖아요.
Hyunwoo: Well, that's true. taehun didn't want to drink, but 억지로, the bosses insisted, so they're responsible too.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 그런데 한국에서는 회식할 때 이런 일이 많이 있는 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 어떤 일이요?
Gyeong-eun: Having to drink when you don't want to, 술을 안 마시고 싶은데 마셔야 되는 거요.
Hyunwoo: Ah, yeah. That's true. but don't worry. 걱정하지 마세요. I will never make any mistakes when I drink with you.
Gyeong-eun: 그걸 어떻게 믿어요?
Hyunwoo: You know you can trust me.
Gyeong-eun: Well, okay. but I don't want to drink with you now, so let's look at the vocabulary instead.
Hyunwoo: Sounds good.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are going to look at is,
Gyeong-eun: 취하다
Hyunwoo: “to be drunk”, “to get drunk”,
Gyeong-eun: 취,하,다 / 취하다.
Hyunwoo: This word basically means to be drunk, but it can be used for other things than just alcohol, too. But first, can you give us some examples with 취하다 meaning “to be drunk”?
Gyeong-eun: 네, “술에 취했어요.”
Hyunwoo: “I am drunk.” Here, as you can see, 취하다 is a present tense verb, so in order to say “to be drunk”, you have to use the past tense to indicate that you did an action to get drunk.
Gyeong-eun: 술에 취했었어요.
Hyunwoo: “I was drunk.” Here, you add one more 었 to indicate that it's in the past tense.
Gyeong-eun: 취할 때까지 마시지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: “Don't keep drinking until you get drunk.”
Gyeong-eun: 현우 씨, 취할 때까지 마시지 마세요, 하하.
Hyunwoo: You mean water?
Gyeong-eun: No, haha.
Hyunwoo: I never drink.
Gyeong-eun: For real?
Hyunwoo: No, I’m just kidding, haha. But I’ve never drunk to get “drunk”, so don’t worry about it. I told you; I promised you earlier that I won’t make any mistakes.
Gyeong-eun: Okay.
Hyunwoo: Now, back to the verb, 취하다, 취하다 can be used to mean 'to be drunk', how else can you use the verb 취하다?
Gyeong-eun: You can say, 음악에 취했어요. 음악에 취해 있었어요.
Hyunwoo: “I'm lost in the music.” / “I was lost in the music.”
Gyeong-eun: 그리고… / 승리에 취했어요. 승리에 취해 있었어요.
Hyunwoo: “We're beside ourselves with victory.” / “We were beside ourselves with victory.” / So as you can see here, 취하다 can be used to express “being lost in the joy of something”, or “to be deeply into something”, 맞죠?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 맞아요. 그리고 저는 분위기에 잘 취해요.
Hyunwoo: Listeners, can you get what 경은 means by “분위기에 취하다"? If you know the answer, please leave us a comment. So 경은 씨, what is the next word we're looking at?
Gyeong-eun: 당장
Hyunwoo: “right now”, “immediately”
Gyeong-eun: 당,장. 당장.
Hyunwoo: This is a very very strong word
Gyeong-eun: 네. 당장!! 느낌이 아주 강한 말이에요. “현우 씨, 당장 이리 와요!”
Hyunwoo: “Come over here right now!” It’s like a command.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: So what are some similar but nicer words that mean “right now”, “right away”, or
“immediately”?
Gyeong-eun: 지금, 바로, or 곧바로.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, there's a slight difference in the nuance between each of these words so they're not always interchangeable, but if you want to avoid using 당장 to somebody, you can say 바로, or 곧바로.
Gyeong-eun: 네 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: Okay, so how about we look at today's grammar point now?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 좋아요!

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What's the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: The grammar point of this lesson is -만 아니면.
Hyunwoo: Yeah. -만 아니면 means “If You Weren't”, “If Only It Weren't” as in the example,
Gyeong-eun: 제가 자주 하는 말이에요. “오늘이 월요일만 아니면!”
Hyunwoo: Haha! “If only it weren't Monday today!”
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: So when you want to suggest that you would or would have done something differently "if only" something had been in a different way, you use this grammatical structure.
Gyeong-eun: It comes from the verb -가 아니다 (-ga anida), which means "to be not" something,
Hyunwoo: Yeah, and it is added to the end of a noun to mean literally "if only it weren't + noun" or "if only it hadn't been + noun" to make the phrase conditional.
Gyeong-eun: And to add the nuance of "only if" to the expression, you add -만 (man), which means "only."
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. So the entire structure becomes -만 아니면 (-man animyeon). So 경은 씨, 예를 좀 들어 주세요. Please give us some examples. How do you say "if only I/you weren't a student"
Gyeong-eun: 학생만 아니면
Hyunwoo: Good. How do you say "If only you weren't my friend"
Gyeong-eun: 친구만 아니면
Hyunwoo: Haha, you sound scary. So, how would you say "If only it weren't my birthday today"
Gyeong-eun: 오늘이 내 생일만 아니면
Hyunwoo: Hehe, you sound scary again… 오늘이 내 생일만 아니면 ... what?
Gyeong-eun: Hahaha. I don't know...
Hyunwoo: So how was this grammatical structure used in this dialogue?
Gyeong-eun: 너... 과장만 아니면 내가 한 대 때렸어.
Hyunwoo: "If only you weren't my section chief, I would have given you a punch!"
Gyeong-eun: 너도 부장만 아니면...
Hyunwoo: "You too, if only you weren't my manager..."
Gyeong-eun: 사장님이 좋아하는 신입사원만 아니면, 당장 해고했을 거야.
Hyunwoo: "If only he weren't the new employee that the president likes, I would have fired him right away."

Outro

Gyeong-eun: 아, 태훈 씨 걱정되는데요?
Hyunwoo: Well, we can find out what happens to him in the next dialogue in lesson number 9.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 기다려져요.
Hyunwoo: 네. So that just about does it for today. 아, 경은 씨, 오늘도 정말 수고하셨어요.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 감사합니다.
Hyunwoo: If only this isn’t the end of this recording, I would be sitting here forever, talking to you.
Gyeong-eun: 오…싫어요! 하하!
Hyunwoo: 이 녹음이 여기서 끝만 아니면 경은 씨랑 계속 이야기할 거예요.
Gyeong-eun: 아, 끝이 나서 다행이네요, 하하.
Hyunwoo: You look very happy that it ends. So we will see you in the next lesson and at KoreanClass101.com. If you have any questions
Gyeong-eun: or feedback,
Hyunwoo: you can come to
Gyeong-eun: KoreanClass101.com
Hyunwoo: And ask us. We are always there to answer. So we’ll see you at the website.
Gyeong-eun: 네! 그리고 저는 분위기에 잘 취해요, 하하.
Hyunwoo: Haha, see you there!
Gyeong-eun: 안녕히 계세요.

Hello 윤성,

Thanks for posting.

너는 작년에 나에게 돈을 빌려줬던 친구만 아니면 도와주지 않았을 거야~

-->네가 작년에 내게 돈을 빌려주지 않았더라면 도와주지 않았을거야.

소팟씨,

안녕하세요.

1/ 너는 신입사원만 아니면 우리 회사에서 해고했어요. The 요 at the end sounds too polite for this sentence.

2/ 너는 우리 회사에서 직원만 아니면 당장 가요.

회사에서 -> 회사

가요 -> 가라고 했어

감사합니다.
