INTRODUCTION
Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, 경은입니다!
Hyun-woo: Hyunwoo here! “As if” You Need to Buy Anything Else in Korea! What are we going to learn how to say in this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: As if that’s not enough or to be not satisfied with something and
Hyun-woo: and yes, this conversation takes place
Gyeong-eun: in a convenience store where 정우 is working as a part-timer.
Hyun-woo: This conversation is between
Gyeong-eun: 정우 and 진경.
Hyun-woo: And the speakers are close to each other, therefore, the speakers will be speaking 반말, intimate language.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 반말.
Hyun-woo: Let’s listen to the dialogue.
DIALOGUE
Hyun-woo: One more time, with the English.
(1)정우: 어서오세요. 어, 진경아.
Hyun-woo: Welcome. Huh? Jingyeong!
(2)진경: 어? 오빠 여기서 뭐 해?
Hyun-woo: Huh? What are you doing here?
(3)정우: 아... 아르바이트 해.
Hyun-woo: Oh, I'm doing my part-time job.
(4)진경: 이 편의점에서? 오빠 과외 하잖아! 과외 하는 것도 모자라서 아르바이트를 또 해?
Hyun-woo: In this convenience store? But you do private tutoring! You do another part-time job as if private tutoring isn't enough for you?
(5)정우: 아... 돈이 더 필요해서. 자동차 한 대 사려고.
Hyun-woo: Oh...I need more money. I'm going to buy a car.
(6)진경: 자동차? 오토바이 있는 것도 모자라서 자동차를 또 사?
Hyun-woo: A car? You're going to buy a car, as if having a motorcycle isn't enough for you?
(7)정우: 응. 자동차가 있어야 데이트 할 때 편해.
Hyun-woo: Yeah, having a car makes it so convenient when I go on dates.
(8)진경: 아... 오빠!!!
Hyun-woo: Come on...
(9)정우: 야, 야. 됐어. 엄마한테 잔소리 듣는 것도 모자라서 너한테도 잔소리 들어야 돼? 나 바빠. 다음에 보자. 응?
Hyun-woo: Hey, hey, that's enough. Do I have to hear nagging from you as if it's not enough to hear my mom's nagging? I'm busy. See you next time, all right?
(10)진경: 진짜... 완전 바람둥이야...
Hyun-woo: He really is a serious playboy.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Gyeong-eun: 현우 씨, 저 질문 있어요.
Hyun-woo: 네. 뭐예요?
Gyeong-eun: Can you be a playboy even when you have no money? 돈이 없어도 바람둥이 될 수 있어요?
Hyun-woo: Oh...well, I don't know! 저도 몰라요. Why do you ask me? 왜 저한테 물어보세요?
Gyeong-eun: 현우 씨 바람둥이처럼 생겼어요, 하하. Just curious. 정우 is working so hard to be a playboy.
Hyun-woo: Well, working hard and being a playboy don’t match, right? Maybe 정우 is just a hardworking nice guy, just like me.
Gyeong-eun: 됐어요. I shouldn't have asked. Let's go to the vocab.
Hyun-woo: Okay!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyun-woo: Thank you, and let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first word we’re going to look at is,
Gyeong-eun: 과외
Hyun-woo: private tutoring
Gyeong-eun: 한국은 과외가 너무 비싸요.
Hyun-woo: Yeah, right. Private tutoring in Korea is really expensive, which is a good thing for the teachers, but not so good for the students. If you want to learn more about the 과외 culture in Korea, be sure to check out the cultural insight in today's lesson notes.
Gyeong-eun: 그런데 '과외'는 왜 '과외'라고 해요? Do you know the origin of this word?
Hyun-woo: Well, 과외 comes from 교과 plus 외, you know 교과 or 교과 과정 means curriculum, and what does 외 mean?
Gyeong-eun: 외 means outside, right?
Hyun-woo: Yeah, 외 is a Hanja word for outside, or out of. So classes that take place 'out of the school lessons/ out of the school curriculum' are 과외 수업, private tutoring lessons. And when you say 과외 it generally only refers to private tutoring. So what's the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 편하다
Hyun-woo: to be convenient, to be comfortable. It's both in Korean. So how do you say 'comfortable clothes'?
Gyeong-eun: 편한 옷
Hyun-woo: And how do you say '현우 is a comfortable friend'?
Gyeong-eun: How do you say ‘현우 is an uncomfortable friend’?
Hyun-woo: You can’t say that. That’s not true. So how do you say ‘현우 is a very comfortable friend’?
Gyeong-eun: 현우는 불편한 친구예요.
Hyun-woo: No!
Gyeong-eun: 현우는 편한 친구예요.
Hyun-woo: 예, 편한 친구죠?
Gyeong-eun: 네. 현우 씨는 편한 친구예요.
Hyun-woo: Would you please try not to sound like I'm forcing you to say that?
Gyeong-eun: Alright, alright. so remember the word 편하다 and 불편하다 / comfortable and uncomfortable
Hyun-woo: Okay, and what's the next word?
Gyeong-eun: 잔소리
Hyun-woo: Nagging / how do you say 'to hear someone's nagging'?
Gyeong-eun: 잔소리를 듣다. And if you're the one who's nagging, you are 잔소리를 하다.
Hyun-woo: And why is it called 잔소리?
Gyeong-eun: Actually 잔소리 literally means 잔 + 소리 , which means small and unimportant words or sounds.
Hyun-woo: So it's something that you don't want to spend your time listening to, right?
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, right. 현우 씨, 잔소리 좀 그만 하세요. 제발!
Hyun-woo: Every single word I say to you is important! I never say 잔소리, haha.
Gyeong-eun: 그게 잔소리예요.

Lesson focus

Hyun-woo: Okay, time to go to the grammar. So, today's grammar point is…?
Gyeong-eun: -도 모자라서
Hyun-woo: as if it wasn't enough / so let’s look at the meaning and its usage in our sentence. So, how do you say it in a sentence? Can you give us an example?
Gyeong-eun: For example, “자동차도 모자라서 오토바이까지 샀어?”
Hyun-woo: "As if having a car wasn't enough, you even bought a motorcycle?"
Gyeong-eun: This pattern originally comes from the verb 모자라다
Hyun-woo: 모자라다. And it means 'to lack' or 'to be not enough'
Gyeong-eun: so sometimes you say “(something)도 부족해서”, too.
Hyun-woo: exactly. basically the same meaning. what if you want to add a verb in front of it?
Gyeong-eun: 명사로 만들어야 돼요. you need to make it into a noun. ㄴ/은/는 것 + 도 모자라서.
Hyun-woo: so you add the nominalizer, ㄴ/은/는 것. So how was this used in today's dialogue?
Gyeong-eun: 진경이가 말했어요. “과외 하는 것도 모자라서 아르바이트를 또 해?”
Hyun-woo: (Jingyeong) "You do another part-time job as if private tutoring isn't enough for you?"
경은 진경이가 또 말했어요. “오토바이 있는 것도 모자라서 자동차를 또 사?”
Hyun-woo: (Jingyeong) "You're going to buy a car, as if having a motorcycle isn't enough for you?"
Gyeong-eun: 정우가 말했어요. “엄마한테 잔소리 듣는 것도 모자라서 너한테도 잔소리 들어야 돼?”
Hyun-woo: (Jeongu) "Do I have to hear preaching from you as if it's not enough to hear my mom's preachings?"
Hyun-woo: Okay, 좋아요. 그럼 경은 씨, so please help us figure out how to say, “You’re going to buy that one as well, as if this one isn’t enough?”
Gyeong-eun: “이것도 모자라서 저것까지 살 거야?”
Hyun-woo: And how do you say, “As if swimming everyday wasn't enough, you want to learn tennis, too?"
Gyeong-eun: “매일 수영 하는 것도 모자라서, 테니스도 할 거야?”

Outro

Hyun-woo: Okay, so that’s just about does it for today,
Gyeong-eun: 네, 오늘도 재미있었길 바라요. 네, 다음 시간에 봬요.
Hyun-woo: 안녕히 계세요.
Gyeong-eun: 안녕히 계세요.
