INTRODUCTION
Gyeong-eun: 안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com입니다! You Learned Korean, But You Still Don’t Know This! I’m joined in the studio by 현우, and I’m 경은.
Hyunwoo: So, what are we going to learn in this lesson? 이 레슨에서 뭐 배울 거예요?
Gyeong-eun: In this lesson, we will learn how to say “even though”, “still” in Korean using “-ㄴ/는데도".
Hyunwoo: Okay! 어디에서 이루어지는 대화예요?
Gyeong-eun: 택시 안에서요! In a taxi.
Hyunwoo: And who is this conversation in between? 누구와 누구 사이의 대화예요?
Gyeong-eun: The conversation is between the 택시기사아저씨, a “taxi driver”, and a 승객, “a passenger”.
Hyunwoo: And they are meeting for the first time, so the speakers are using polite language to each other.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 처음 만나는 사이니까 존댓말을 쓰고 있겠죠?
Hyunwoo: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
택시기사: 어서오세요. 어디로 모실까요?
Hyunwoo: Welcome. Where to?
승객3: 여의도로 가 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Please take me to Yeouido.
택시기사: 오늘 좋은 일 있으세요? 꽃다발도 사고.
Hyunwoo: Is there something good going on today? I see you've bought a bunch of flowers.
승객3: 아. 제가 오늘 여자친구한테 프로포즈를 하려고요. 연습을 많이 했는데도 너무 떨리네요.
Hyunwoo: Oh, I'm planning to propose to my girlfriend today. I've practiced a lot but I'm still nervous.
택시기사: 아. 축하 드립니다.
Hyunwoo: Oh, congratulations.
승객3: 네. 감사합니다. 전망이 좋은 곳으로 예약을 했어요. 준비를 많이 했는데도 너무 부족한 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Thank you. I've booked a place with a nice view. I've done a lot of preparation, but I still feel like it's not enough.
택시기사: 여자친구가 분명히 좋아할 거예요.
Hyunwoo: I'm sure your girlfriend will like it.
승객3: 그런데 뭐라고 해야 할지 모르겠어요. 멋진 말로 프로포즈 하고 싶은데...
Hyunwoo: But I don't know what to say. I want to propose to her with some nice words but...
택시기사: 음... 너랑 닮은 예쁜 딸 낳아줘. 이런 말 어때요? 하하하. 제가 프로포즈 할 때 쓴 말이에요.
Hyunwoo: Hmm...how about something like, I want to have a baby girl that looks like you. Hahaha. I used that line when I proposed to my wife.
승객3: 아. 좋아요. 기사님은 프로포즈하고 바로 결혼 했나요?
Hyunwoo: Oh, nice! Did you marry her right after you proposed to her?
택시기사: 제 프로포즈에 감동 받았대요. 제가 능력이 없었는데도 바로 결혼했어요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah, she said that she was moved by my proposal. Even though I wasn't very successful at my job, she still married me right away.
승객3: 좋아요. 저도 그렇게 할게요. 너무 감사합니다. 저기서 내려 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Good. I'll do the same. Thank you so much. Let me get off over there.
택시기사: 프로포즈 꼭 성공하세요. 화이팅!
Hyunwoo: Hope you'll make a successful proposal. Good luck!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Haha. I'm not sure if the line that the taxi driver used... probably 20 years ago would work, especially not for this young man riding the taxi.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 제 생각에도 별로... 좋은 생각은 아닌 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: Well, I have an uncle who is a taxi driver now, and he likes to give his opinions and suggestions to people, and 젊은 승객들을 많이 만나 본 다음에, he tells me that after meeting all these younger passengers, he realized that all the worries that he had about his children were not very necessary.
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 하하. 택시 운전사는 쉬운 직업은 아닌데, 그래도 사람들을 많이 만날 수 있는 것은 좋은 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: 네. But most of the time, it's usually just for a short period of time. 그래서 그렇게 깊은 이야기를 하지는 못 하는 것 같아요.
Gyeong-eun: But I think the service of taxis Korea is getting better and better.
Hyunwoo: I have to agree. Before, the service used to really depend on the person, but these days, I think the taxi companies are emphasizing good service, too.
Gyeong-eun: 그래도 요즘에 택시 요금이 많이 올라서, 사람들이 택시를 덜 타는 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: That's one more reason that the service is improving, I guess. So alright, now how about we have a look at the vocabulary for this lesson?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: So let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So what are we looking at?
Gyeong-eun: 떨리다
Hyunwoo: “to be nervous”
Gyeong-eun: (slow) 떨리다 (normal) 떨리다
Hyunwoo: 경은 씨, let me ask you; are you nervous now? Are you usually nervous when you record our lessons?
Gyeong-eun: 저요? 당연히... 아직도 떨려요, 하하. 그래도 예전보다 덜 떨려요.
Hyunwoo: That's good to know, 다행이에요.
Gyeong-eun: 현우 씨는 떨려요?
Hyunwoo: I guess I'm not, 근데, 예전에는 많이 떨렸어요. 하하.
Gyeong-eun: 그러면 현우 씨는, 어떨 때 떨려요?
Hyunwoo: Not much these days, but I used to be very nervous when someone took photos of me. 다른 사람이 제 사진을 찍으면 많이 떨렸었어요.
Gyeong-eun: 지금은요?
Hyunwoo: Well, if you want to take photos of me, please go ahead, haha. 제 사진 찍고 싶으면 언제든지 찍으세요.
Gyeong-eun: 별로 안 찍고 싶은데요.
Hyunwoo: I know you don't want to take photos of me, but I just wanted to say that I'm not nervous, 안 떨려요, when I take photos. 여러분은 어떨 때 떨리세요? 사진 찍을 때 떨리세요? 시험 볼 때 떨리세요?
Gyeong-eun: 시험 볼 때 떨리지 않을까요? And a similar expression for this is 긴장되다.
Hyunwoo: Right. How do you tell someone not to be nervous?
Gyeong-eun: it changes a bit, and you say 떨지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: Or?
Gyeong-eun: 긴장하지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: 떨지 마세요. 긴장하지 마세요. Okay, 경은 씨, 떨지 마세요.
Gyeong-eun: Alright. 현우 씨는 다리 떨지 마세요.
Hyunwoo: Haha. oh that's a good expression for our listeners to know, too. Haha. 다리를 떨다. “To shake one's legs”.
Gyeong-eun: Yes, don't shake your legs, haha.
Hyunwoo: Alright. Alright. Now let's go to the grammar point of this lesson.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What's the grammar point for this lesson?
Gyeong-eun: The grammar point of this lesson is to say "even though...", "... but still" in Korean.
Hyunwoo: As in the example?
Gyeong-eun: 열 번 전화했는데도 안 받았어요.
Hyunwoo: "Even though I called her ten times, she didn't answer."
Gyeong-eun: When you want to say "Even though ... still ..." or "... but still" in Korean, you can use the structure -ㄴ/는데도.
Hyunwoo: 네. Well, you can use more simple words like 그런데, 그래도, and 하지만 to connect two sentences and show contrast, but using the structure -ㄴ/는데도 shows a stronger contrast and emphasizes the nuance of "even though."
Gyeong-eun: 네. 맞아요. 그리고... -ㄴ/는데도 can be combined with 그렇다,
Hyunwoo: "to be so,"
Gyeong-eun: to form 그런데도, which can work like 그런데, 그래도, and 하지만 at the beginning of a new sentence.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. And for the past tense, you can use 그랬는데도. right?
Gyeong-eun: 네.
Hyunwoo: Okay, so how do you use this in a sentence?
Gyeong-eun: Okay, for example, 보다 is “to see” and you make it 보는데도.
Hyunwoo: “even though I see” / and how about in the past tense?
Gyeong-eun: 봤는데도,
Hyunwoo: “even though I saw”.
Gyeong-eun: And with 말하다,
Hyunwoo: which is "to say"
Gyeong-eun: you say 말하는데도,
Hyunwoo: “even though I say” / and in the past tense?
Gyeong-eun: 말했는데도,
Hyunwoo: “even though I said” / okay. So, 이 레슨의 대화에서는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Gyeong-eun: 연습을 많이 했는데도 너무 떨리네요.
Hyunwoo: "I've practiced a lot but I'm still nervous."
Gyeong-eun: 준비를 많이 했는데도 너무 부족한 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: "I've done a lot of preparation but I still feel like it's not enough."
Gyeong-eun: 제가 능력이 없었는데도 바로 결혼했어요.
Hyunwoo: "Even though I wasn't very successful in my job, she still married me right away." / great. But how about we look at more sample sentences before we finish? 예문을 좀 더 볼까요?
Gyeong-eun: 네! 현우 씨가 영어로 말해 주세요. 그러면 제가 한국어로 말을 할게요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 그리고 여러분도 같이 생각해 보세요! First, "Even though I've eaten, I'm still hungry."
Gyeong-eun: 밥을 먹었는데도 배가 고파요.
Hyunwoo: "Even though I've heard the explanation, I still don't understand."
Gyeong-eun: 설명을 들었는데도 모르겠어요.
Hyunwoo: "I've slept but I still feel tired."
Gyeong-eun: 잠을 잤는데도 피곤해요.
Hyunwoo: And how about this one? "Even though I study everyday, my English is not getting better."
Gyeong-eun: 매일 공부하는데도 영어 실력이 늘지 않아요., wait, are you talking about me in this sentence, haha?
Hyunwoo: Umm… I don't know, haha.
Gyeong-eun: 그래서 제가 현우 씨를 안 좋아하는 거예요.
Hyunwoo: 그래요? 괜찮아요, 하하.
Gyeong-eun: What? Haha.
Hyunwoo: Just kidding. 제발 저 싫어하지 마세요. Please don’t hate me. 그리고 경은 씨, 공부 좀 열심히 하세요.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 저는 현우 씨가 진짜 싫어요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: I'm just kidding! So that just about does it for today.
Gyeon-eun: 안녕히 계세요!
Hyunwoo: 안녕히 계세요!
