Key Phrases
Jaehwi: Here are the key phrases from the scene.
Jaehwi: In the scene, how did Mark order?
Jaehwi: It means โ€œOne Kimchi stew, and one soft tofu stew, please.โ€
Jaehwi: When you order food, first say the name of the food.
Jaehwi: For example, ๊น€์น˜์ฐŒ๊ฐœ if you want to have Kimchi stew.
Jaehwi: Then say how many you need, for example ํ•˜๋‚˜ for one, ๋‘ ๊ฐœ for two, ์„ธ ๊ฐœ for three.
Jaehwi: Then simply add ์ฃผ์„ธ์š” which literally means โ€œplease give.โ€
Jaehwi: If you want to order two Kimchi stews, you can say ๊น€์น˜ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ๋‘ ๊ฐœ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: When you order two or more items, you can connect food names with the word ๋ž‘ which means "and."
Jaehwi: Using this pattern, if you want to order one Kimchi and one bowl of rice, you can say ๊น€์น˜ ํ•˜๋‚˜๋ž‘ ๋ฐฅ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: Now you try! Say Mark's line.
์ง์›: ๋ญ˜๋กœ ๋“œ๋ฆด๊นŒ์š”?
Mark: ๊น€์น˜ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜๋ž‘, ์ˆœ๋‘๋ถ€ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: What did Mark say when he wanted to get more Kimchi?
Mark: ์•„์ฃผ๋จธ๋‹ˆ, ์ €ํฌ ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: It means โ€œPlease give me more Kimchi.โ€
Jaehwi: Mark wanted to get more Kimchi, so he said the word ๊น€์น˜ first.
Jaehwi: As you know, Kimchi is the name of a very common Korean side dish.
Jaehwi: This phrase ends with the verb '์ฃผ์„ธ์š”' It's an honorific form of the verb ์ฃผ๋‹ค which means "to give."
Jaehwi: In this line, Mark also uses the word ์ข€. In this context, it is used to ask more politely.
Jaehwi: If you donโ€™t use the word ์ข€ and just say ๊น€์น˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š” โ€œKimchi please,โ€ it sounds a bit rude because it's very direct.
Jaehwi: By adding the word ์ข€, you can make your request less direct, and therefore more polite.
Jaehwi: Now you try! Say Mark's line asking for more Kimchi.
Mark: ์•„์ฃผ๋จธ๋‹ˆ, ์ €ํฌ ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.

Lesson focus

Jaehwi: Now the lesson focus. Here is how to order food at a Korean restaurant.
Jaehwi: Korean restaurants are a little different from other types of restaurants.
Jaehwi: When youโ€™re ready to order in a Korean restaurant, you simply need to raise your hand and say ์ €๊ธฐ์š” which means โ€œExcuse me, there?โ€
Jaehwi: If you are eating in a traditional Korean restaurant, itโ€™s normal to address the female staff in the restaurant as ์•„์ฃผ๋จธ๋‹ˆ if they are over the age of 30.
Jaehwi: To male staff, you can use ์•„์ €์”จ. Listen again to what Mark said.
Mark: ์•„์ฃผ๋จธ๋‹ˆ, ์—ฌ๊ธฐ ์ฃผ๋ฌธ์ด์š”.
Jaehwi: If itโ€™s too loud for the waiters to hear you, call the staff again. Itโ€™s not rude.
Jaehwi: Some of the most popular Korean dishes people order are ๊น€์น˜ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ or โ€œKimchi stewโ€ and ์ˆœ๋‘๋ถ€ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ or โ€œstew with soft tofu.โ€
Jaehwi: These foods are a bit spicy, so If you don't like spicy foods, look for a dish called ๋ถˆ๊ณ ๊ธฐ.
Jaehwi: ๋ถˆ๊ณ ๊ธฐ is sliced and seasoned barbecued beef. This is another popular dish among foreigners.
Jaehwi: If you're not quite sure what to order, ask the waiter ์—ฌ๊ธฐ ๋ญ๊ฐ€ ๊ฐ€์žฅ ๋ง›์žˆ์–ด์š”?
Jaehwi: It means โ€œWhat's the most delicious food here?โ€ and they will tell you a few of their most popular dishes.
Jaehwi: When you finally decide on what to order, say the name of the food you want, and say ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. Listen to what Mark said.
Mark: ๊น€์น˜ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜๋ž‘, ์ˆœ๋‘๋ถ€ ์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: Simply say the name of the food, and add ์ฃผ์„ธ์š” meaning โ€œplease give.โ€
Jaehwi: If you just need one Kimchi stew, for example, you can say ๊น€์น˜์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: Most dishes are served with a serving of rice and assorted side dishes for free.
Jaehwi: These side dishes are called ๋ฐ˜์ฐฌ. They can be refilled for free.
Jaehwi: You can get more by saying the food name, and ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: For example, if you need more Kimchi, you can say ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. โ€œPlease give us more Kimchi.โ€
Jaehwi: If you need a bottle of water, say ๋ฌผ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. It means โ€œPlease give me a bottle of water.โ€
Jaehwi: Sometimes restaurants have a sign that says ๋ฌผ์€ ์…€ํ”„์ž…๋‚˜๋‹ค.
Jaehwi: This literally means โ€œWater is for self-service.โ€
Jaehwi: They post it to say you should pour your own water, so look around first for the sign before you ask them to bring water.
Practice
Jaehwi: Now it's time to practice your new ability.
Jaehwi: Youโ€™re in a traditional Korean restaurant and youโ€™ve called the waiter over. Ready? Here we go.
Jaehwi: You want to order one Kimchi stew. How will you order?
Jaehwi: ๊น€์น˜์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: Youโ€™ve run out of side dishes and need them refilled. What should you say?
Jaehwi: ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: Great job!
Jaehwi: ๊น€์น˜์ฐŒ๊ฐœ ํ•˜๋‚˜ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
Jaehwi: ๊น€์น˜ ์ข€ ๋” ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”.
