| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: Well I use this kind of expression a lot but not always because I am really surprised but just to show some reaction |
| Hyunwoo: You want to be polite or well even if you don’t have a friend who tells you that she is going to become a singer all of a sudden, you can show that you are surprised or your reaction or you just confirm what you heard using this expression. |
| Miseon: 예, 맞아요. Like 정말? 와~ right? |
| Hyunwoo: Exactly. |
| Miseon: So let’s find out how to use it. |

| Hyunwoo: Now this phrase 전화가 오다 literally means the telephone comes – the telephone comes to you. |
| Miseon: Yeah come to me. Imagine a telephone walks towards you and say hey, you have a phone call. |
| Hyunwoo: That would be cute or scary. |
| Miseon: 감사합니다. |
| Hyunwoo: Well anyway, so this is the Korean expression you would say when you want to say, there was a phone call or someone gave me a phone call. |
| Miseon: 전화가 왔어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah okay. So what is the next word we are looking at? |
| Miseon: 뽑히다 |
| Hyunwoo: To be chosen. |
| Miseon: 뽑히다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 뽑히다 [natural native speed] |
| Hyunwoo: This is passive and when you are actively choosing something, how you say that? |
| Miseon: You say 뽑다. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah 뽑히다 and 뽑다. So let’s take a look at an example. How do you say I was chosen? |
| Miseon: You use 뽑히다. So it becomes 뽑혔어요. |
| Hyunwoo: And how about I chose? |
| Miseon: 뽑았어요. |
| Hyunwoo: Great job. Now let’s have a look at the grammar. |

| Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to show disbelief or surprise as a reaction to someone’s statement as I stated before. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah as in the example |
| Miseon: 텔레비전에도 나올 거라고? |
| Hyunwoo: You are going to be on TV too? |
| Miseon: Yeah. So when someone tells you something and you want to show a reaction of disbelief or surprise, you can use the ending 다고요? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and this is for the present tense and the past tense. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. For the future tense, you use the ending 라고요? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah and this is because the future tense in Korean ends in (으)ㄹ 것이다. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞습니다. (으)ㄹ 것이다 plus 라고요 becomes (으)ㄹ 것이라고요 but it is shortened to 거라고요 to make the pronunciation easier and simpler. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah 것이라고요 becoming 거라고요 is much simpler and of course, you can add 요 at the end to make it sound more polite and leave it out in intimate language. |
| Miseon: 거라고요 |
| Hyunwoo: 거라고요 |
| Miseon: 네. So the entire phrase is translated as so what you said is or so you mean or I’ve heard that blah, blah, blah, blah. Is that right? |
| Hyunwoo: Great. So please show us how it is used to construct a sentence. |
| Miseon: 네. 오다 is to come and it becomes 오 plus (으)ㄹ 것이다 plus 라고요 so 올 것이라고요? or 올 거라고요? |
| Hyunwoo: Which means, you are going to come? |
| Miseon: The same goes for 하다. |
| Hyunwoo: Which means to do |
| Miseon: 네. And it becomes 할 것이라고요? or 할 거라고요? |
| Hyunwoo: You are going to do it? But 미선씨 |
| Miseon: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: Between the 할 것이라고요? and 할 거라고요?, which one do you use more often? |
| Miseon: 할 거라고요? |
| Hyunwoo: And what is the reason? |
| Miseon: Because it’s simpler. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah exactly. Okay now before we look at some more sample sentences, I would like to introduce a more common way that people actually say this sentence which is |
| Miseon: 뭐예요? I don’t know. |
| Hyunwoo: You don’t know? |
| Miseon: No, you know that. So you can teach me. |
| Hyunwoo: All right. Instead of saying 거라고요 people often find it easier you know, to say for some reason 거라구요 and I think 거라구요 sounds even cuter than 거라고요. Don’t you think? |
| Miseon: 거라구요? It’s more flowing actually. |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah. |
| Miseon: Yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: It’s more natural. |
| Miseon: Yeah, yeah, yeah. |
| Hyunwoo: So a lot of people choose to say 거라구요 and this is not 100% correct but 99% of the people usually say 거라구요. So you will see this in books, movie subtitles and song lyrics 거라구요. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞아요. |
| Hyunwoo: So please say the following sentences in Korean using this 구요 and 고요 at the same time please. |
| Miseon: 네, 알겠습니다. |
| Hyunwoo: So how do you say you are going to move next month? |
| Miseon: 다음 달에 이사할 거라고요? or 다음 달에 이사할 거라구요? |
| Hyunwoo: Yeah the latter sounds much more natural. |
| Miseon: 네. |
| Hyunwoo: But 다음 달에 이사할 거라고요? is what you are going to see in most textbooks. |
| Miseon: 네, 맞습니다. |
| Hyunwoo: Okay so how about you are going to stay in America until next year? |
| Miseon: 내년까지 미국에 있을 거라구요? |
| Hyunwoo: And how do you say when did you say you were going to come? |
| Miseon: 언제 올 거라구요? |
| Hyunwoo: And how do you say, where did you say he was? |
| Miseon: 어디라고요? |
