Store clerk: Can I help you? |
Customer: Um...I'd like to buy a laptop... |
Store clerk: What kind of laptop are you looking for? |
Customer: I only have seven hundred thousand won. |
Store clerk: Seven hundred thousand won? Hmm...if that's the case, we only have this model here. |
Customer: This one? This is the only one? |
Store clerk: Yes. If you have eight hundred thousand won, you can buy this one. |
Customer: Hmm... If I save up as much money as possible, it's seven hundred and fifty thousand won. That's not enough, right? |
Store clerk: With seven hundred and fifty thousand won, you can only buy this one. |
Customer: Hmm...this is...too big. Don't you have a smaller one? |
Store clerk: We don't... For this price, we only have big ones. |
Customer: Oh...I see...then I'll come back after saving fifty thousand won more. |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Miseon: Poor ์๋. ํ์ฐ์จ, where do you usually buy your electronics. I know you have lots of electronics right? |
Hyunwoo: I do but I donโt think I have so many more than average. |
Miseon: Really? |
Hyunwoo: Aaha! |
Miseon: Ah I am not even go to below average then. |
Hyunwoo: You are not even up to the average but any way, I usually buy them at ์ฉ์ฐ but these days it seems so expensive. |
Miseon: Yeah instead of physically going to the store these days, a lot of people are just buying their stuff on the internet right? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah, exactly. And it is so easy to compare models and prices online. So you know and people go there, go to Yongsan. The people who are selling stuff at Yongsan, they already know that. The customers already know the prices and you know the specifications. So itโs easier for the customers and if you are lazy like me, you donโt have to leave the comfort of your own room and I like that. |
Miseon: Yeah me too. I am very lazy. So everything is I have done through internet. |
Hyunwoo: Exactly. Itโs easy. |
Miseon: Click click right. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah and the online shops these days, they have more credibility than before. So itโs good. |
Miseon: You seem like that kind of type. |
Hyunwoo: Like a type of person who would order a lot of things online? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Well actually I donโt buy a lot of things online. I just like to if I can order things online because you can save time. So the other good thing is that sites often offer free shipping and the goods usually arrive within like two days. |
Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. A couple of days ago, I actually ordered like one big immigration bag and then it came home like two days after. |
Hyunwoo: Thatโs awesome. |
Miseon: Yeah so itโs really quick and convenient. Itโs all about convenience right? |
Hyunwoo: Right. |
Miseon: By the way, did you know the Gmarket.com now has services available in English for people living outside of Korea? |
Hyunwoo: Wow thatโs good news but I hope our listeners donโt go bankrupt buying ์๋
์๋ and Big Bang CDs. |
Miseon: Right thatโs true. |
VOCAB LIST |
Hyunwoo: All right. Now letโs look at the vocab for this lesson. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: The first word we are going to look at is |
Miseon: ์ฐพ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: To search for, to look for |
Miseon: ์ฐพ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ฐพ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: And |
Miseon: ๋
ธํธ๋ถ |
Hyunwoo: Laptop, computer. |
Miseon: ๋
ธํธ๋ถ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋
ธํธ๋ถ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Next |
Miseon: ์ฌ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: To buy |
Miseon: ์ฌ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ฌ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ |
Miseon: ์ด๋ค |
Hyunwoo: What kind of |
Miseon: ์ด๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ด๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ ๋ค์ ๋จ์ด๋ |
Miseon: ๋ |
Hyunwoo: Money |
Miseon: ๋ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Next |
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋ฌ์๋ฉด |
Hyunwoo: If thatโs the case, in that case, honorific. |
Miseon: ๊ทธ๋ฌ์๋ฉด [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๊ทธ๋ฌ์๋ฉด [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ |
Miseon: ๋ชจ๋ธ |
Hyunwoo: Model |
Miseon: ๋ชจ๋ธ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ชจ๋ธ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: Next |
Miseon: ์ต๋ํ |
Hyunwoo: To the maximum, most. |
Miseon: ์ต๋ํ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ์ต๋ํ [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ |
Miseon: ๋ชจ์ผ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: Together to save up money. |
Miseon: ๋ชจ์ผ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ชจ์ผ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ๊ณ |
Miseon: ๋ถ์กฑํ๋ค |
Hyunwoo: To be lacking, to be insufficient. |
Miseon: ๋ถ์กฑํ๋ค [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๋ถ์กฑํ๋ค [natural native speed] |
Hyunwoo: ๋ง์ง๋ง์ผ๋ก |
Miseon: ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ |
Hyunwoo: Price |
Miseon: ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ [slowly - broken down by syllable] ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ [natural native speed] |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Hyunwoo: Letโs have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we are looking at is |
Miseon: ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ |
Hyunwoo: ๋ฏธ์ ์จ, isnโt there another word for price? |
Miseon: ๋ค. Thatโs ๊ฐ. |
Hyunwoo: Well there is not much difference between these two words but which one do you use more often? |
Miseon: I usually use ๊ฐ instead of ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ. I donโt know why butโฆ |
Hyunwoo: Maybe itโsโฆ |
Miseon: You know usually like ๊ฐ์ด ์ผ๋ง์์? instead of ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ์ด ์ผ๋ง์์? |
Hyunwoo: Yeah maybe because itโs shorter. |
Miseon: Yeah, I think itโs much simpler. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah, yeah andโฆ |
Miseon: Even though one syllable short. |
Hyunwoo: Right. And just like you said, ๊ฐ์ด ์ผ๋ง์์? and ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ์ด ์ผ๋ง์์? between those two sentences, I think ๊ฐ์ด ์ผ๋ง์์? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Or not saying ๊ฐ์ด in the first place ์ผ๋ง์์? |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: Is enough in most cases. |
Miseon: Uh-huh. |
Hyunwoo: So ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ and ๊ฐ. |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: And ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ is a Sino-Korean word. It has Chinese background but ๊ฐ itโs a native Korean word. |
Miseon: Uh-huh. |
Hyunwoo: Okay and what is the next word? |
Miseon: Next word is ์ต๋ํ. |
Hyunwoo: Maximum, as much as possible and what is the opposite of ์ต๋ํ? |
Miseon: ์ต์ํ. ์ต means the most in ํ์ Chinese characters. If you know the two Chinese characters ๋ and ์, you can remember the meaning of ์ต๋ํ and ์ต์ํ. |
Hyunwoo: Right. |
Miseon: Easily. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah. And what does ๋ mean? |
Miseon: ๋ means big. |
Hyunwoo: And how about ์? |
Miseon: ์ means small ์์์. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah so ์ต๋ํ means |
Miseon: The most big, the biggest. |
Hyunwoo: Right or maximum. And ์ต์ํ means |
Miseon: The most small, it means the smallest, minimum. |
Hyunwoo: Exactly. So we use this word ์ต๋ํ to indicate that a number or amount is the maximum. For example, ์ต๋ ์๋ is the maximum speed. |
Miseon: Or ์ต๋ํ ๋
ธ๋ ฅํ๋ค to make the best effort. |
Hyunwoo: Thatโs right and we hope that our students at Koreanclass101.com are learning the ์ต๋ํ amount of Korean with the ์ต์ํ amount of effort. |
Miseon: Of course they are. |
Hyunwoo: Okay now itโs time for grammar point. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Lesson focus
|
Hyunwoo: What is the grammar point of this lesson? |
Miseon: We are going to talk about how to say only or nothing but using ๋ฐ์ like ์ด๊ฒ๋ฐ์ ์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I only have this one. What about ๋ง like ๋ ๊ฐ๋ง ์ฃผ์ธ์. Please give me just two. |
Miseon: Well that works but sometimes we need to use a stronger expression. |
Hyunwoo: Like when the customer who is looking for a laptop wants to stress that he canโt pay anymore than 70๋ง์ because he doesnโt have enough savings. |
Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. He canโt possibly pay more because he doesnโt have any more money. So he says he had 70๋ง์ ๋ฐ์ ์๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: Which means I only have 700,000 won or 700,000 won is the only amount of money that I have. Can you explain to our listeners why we say ์๋ค? |
Miseon: Sure ๋ฐ์ is always used with negative verb because ๋ฐ์ literally means outside or out of and by using a negative verb with ๋ฐ์ the entire sentence emphasizes the meaning of only. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah so it goes like noun plus ๋ฐ์ plus negative verbs. |
Miseon: ๋ค, ๋ง์์. |
Hyunwoo: Okay and this grammar point came out quite a lot in the dialogue for this lesson. So how about making some sample sentences. |
Miseon: Sure ์ ๊ฐ ๋์ด 70๋ง์ ๋ฐ์ ์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: I only have KRW700, 000. How about another one? |
Miseon: ์ด๊ฒ ๋ฐ์ ์์ด์? |
Hyunwoo: This is the only one and one more. |
Miseon: ์ด ๊ฐ๊ฒฉ์ผ๋ก๋ ํฐ ๊ฒ ๋ฐ์ ์์ด์. |
Hyunwoo: For this price, we only have big ones. Okay how about making some sentences that are commonly heard in daily life in Korea? |
Miseon: Okay. How about ์ด๊ฑด ์ ๋ฐ์ ๋ชป ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: Only I can do this. |
Miseon: Okay |
Hyunwoo: For people with a lot of pride all right. |
Miseon: I am very proud of myself. |
Hyunwoo: ์ ๋ฐ์ ๋ชป ํด์. |
Miseon: ์ ๋ฐ์ ๋ชป ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: No one else can. |
Miseon: Right. |
Hyunwoo: So okay and another one? |
Miseon: ์ด ์ฑ
์ 2๋ง์ ๋ฐ์ ์ ํด์. |
Hyunwoo: This book only costs 2๋ง์ 20,000 won and this one is for people with too much money to burn like Miseon, right? |
Miseon: Hmm... |
Hyunwoo: Just kidding. |
Miseon: All right. I forgive you. |
Hyunwoo: Okay and we only have a little bit of time left. We only have ์๊ฐ์ด ์กฐ๊ธ๋ฐ์ ์์ด์. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Outro
|
Hyunwoo: So I think itโs time to wrap it up for today. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: Soโฆ |
Miseon: ์์ฌ์์. |
Hyunwoo: ์์ฌ์์. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: But we are going to come back. |
Miseon: ๋ค. |
Hyunwoo: So donโt forget that you can leave us a comment on this lesson. |
Miseon: So if you have a question or some feedback, please leave us a comment. You know that. |
Hyunwoo: Yeah itโs very easy to do and you can come to KoreanClass101.com and do some practice making sentences. So if you look at the first comment, we always give you a question. Can you make some sample sentences using this grammar point and after you write your sentences, we will be there to help you to make your sentences more natural. So we will see you at |
