INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Yunseorimnida.)
Keith: Keith here. Express Regret - I Should Have Taken the Korean Subway. What are we going to learn how to express? We're going to learn how to express some emotions.
Seol: Yeah, it's about regrets.
Keith: And we're not talking specifically about the word regret. What is that?
Seol: 후회
Keith: Right. We're talking about the grammar point.
Seol: And it's -걸 그랬어요.
Keith: Right, and that's going to express regret. So can we have an example?
Seol: 밥 먹을 걸 그랬어요. 배고파요.
Keith: Ah, I should have ate! I'm hungry. So remember to listen out for...
Seol: 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: Ok. And who's this conversation between?
Seol: It's between a couple.
Keith: And they only just started dating, so maybe they're speaking polite Korean.
Seol: Oh! 존댓말?
Keith: Yep. That's right.
Keith: 들어 봅시다.
Seol: 네.
DIALOGUE

Seol: 한 번 더 천천히.
Keith: One more time, slowly.
성철: 영미 씨, 헉헉... 많이 기다렸어요? 미안해요! 지하철 타고 올 걸 그랬어요.
영미: 괜찮아요. 우리 어디 가요?
성철: 우리 영화 보러 가요.

Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
Keith: One more time, with the English.
성철: 영미 씨, 헉헉... 많이 기다렸어요? 미안해요! 지하철 타고 올 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: Yeongmi. Did you wait for long? Sorry! I should have taken the subway.

영미: 극장에 사람 정말 많아요!
Keith: There are a lot of people at the theater!
성철: 진짜요? 아... 예매할 걸 그랬어요... 미안해요...
Keith: Really? Oh, I should have booked tickets. I'm sorry.
영미: 예매... 안 했어요?
Keith: You didn't book the tickets?
성철: 네... 그럼 우리 일산 호수 공원 가요.
Keith: No, I didn't. Then, let's go to Ilsan Lake Park.
영미: 네? 여기서 두 시간 걸려요.
Keith: Are you serious? It takes two hours to get there from here.
성철: 아... 차를 가지고 올 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: Oh. I should have brought my car.
영미: 휴... 그냥 밥 먹어요.
Keith: Let's just eat.
성철: 아... 밥이요? 밥을 안 먹고 올 걸 그랬어요...
Keith: Eat? I shouldn't have eaten before coming here.
영미: 네? 됐어요. 전 갈래요.
Keith: What? Forget it. I'm leaving.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Seol: Well, he doesn't know the basics of dating.
Keith: What are the basics? I don't know the basics either.
Seol: It's kind of the manners and etiquette. What do you expect from a date? You should eat something and you should do something fun! You should be prepared for the dating.
Keith: And those are the basics?
Seol: Yeah, sure.
Keith: Well, just like me on a lot of dates, this guy, he doesn't have a lot going for him over here? By the way, what kind of place is 일산? Here the guy, he suggested that they should go to 일산 Lake Park? Was that a good choice?
Seol: Yeah. Actually it's a very good choice in my opinion. 일산 is a city in the outskirts of 서울, and there's a big lake there, and there's a huge park around the lake, and it's really beautiful.
Keith: Right, and I hear there's a lot of nice cafes and restaurants and a lot of couples go there too. So it's actually a nice choice, but going to 일산, it takes some time, actually.
Seol: Yeah, so you've got to think of spending at least an hour and a half to go there.
Keith: Right. If you're in Seoul, that is.
Seol: Right.
Keith: So if you have a date coming up this weekend, what's a good place that they could take them?
Seol: 일산 호수 공원
Keith: The Ilsan Lake Park. Pretty nice. I haven't been there yet, but, again, I think I've got to get the basics of dating down first.
Seol: And another basic to not eat before dating.
Keith: True that. Let's take a look at the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Ok, well, it's time to take a closer look at some of the words and phrases. What's the first one we're going to take a look at?
Seol: 예매하다
Keith: To buy tickets in advance. And we can break that down, right?
Seol: Yeah. 예 means in advance, and 매 means to buy. 예 매. 예매.
Keith: So together, you buy in advance. What if you're just making a reservation? What's that called?
Seol: 예약.
Keith: And the verb is?
Seol: 예약하다
Keith: Right so if you're going to reserve movie tickets, and you should do at least one of the two, if you're going to watch a movie on the weekend. 예약, to reserve or 예매, to buy in advance. Ok. What's our next word?
Seol: 호수
Keith: Lake.
Seol: I love this word. I like the sound of this word.
Keith: Are there a lot of lakes in Korea?
Seol: Not too many, but a few dozens of them, small and big. And I think 일산 Lake Park, 일산 호수 공원, is the most famous lake park in Korea.
Keith: Actually, I think the most famous lake is in North Korea.
Seol: Ah! You mean, 백두산 천지.
Keith: That's right. 백두산 is the mountain that borders North Korea and China, and on top of that, there's a crater lake. It's really, really beautiful. I've seen pictures, but I've never gone there.
Seol: Me, neither.
Keith: But you can actually go there, if you want to, but you've got to go from the China side.
Seol: My father went there and he said it's really beautiful.
Keith: Yeah. I definitely want to go there because that's where the origin of Korean people are. That's our roots.
Seol: Wow.
Keith: Alright. Well, it's time to take a look at the grammar.

Lesson focus

Keith: Seol, what's our grammar point for this lesson?
Seol: -ㄹ/을 걸 그랬다.
Keith: 'I should have', 'I regret that I didn't.' Of course, this is a way to express regret.
Seol: The last part, 그랬다 means "it was so" or "I did it." So literally, you're saying "I did A while I could have done B."
Keith: Ok. Well, how is this constructed in a sentence?
Seol: Verb stem plus -ㄹ/을 걸 그랬다
Keith: Ok. So let's take an example. How about the verb, 말하다, 'to say,' 'to tell'?
Seol: You need 말하 as the verb stem, if you add ㄹ 걸 그랬다 at the end, so it becomes 말할 걸 그랬다
Keith: "I should have said it." Or "I should have told it." So how did it come out in this dialogue then?
Seol: 성철 said 지하철 타고 올 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: I should have taken the subway. And of course, expressing regret. He did something else, but he should have taken the subway. What else should he have done?
Seol: 예매할 걸 그랬어요...
Keith: I should have bought the tickets in advance.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Alright, well what else?
Seol: He also said, 차를 가지고 올 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: I should have brought my car. And finally?
Seol: 밥을 안 먹고 올 걸 그랬어요...
Keith: I should have not eaten before coming here. A lot of regret. But we have a sample sentence for our listeners so that they don't regret. What should our listeners not say?
Seol: 공부를 더 열심히 할 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: "I should have studied harder."
Seol: And 조심할 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: “I should have been more careful." Or "I regret not being careful."

Outro

Keith: Ok. Well, that just about does it for this lesson.
Keith: Seol, we'll see you next time. Don't have any regrets.
Seol: 더 재미있게 할 걸 그랬어요.
Keith: “You should have had more fun,” or “you should have done it in a more fun manner”? It was fun. I had fun.
Seol: Thank you!
Keith: Hopefully, our listeners did too. Well, see you next time!
Seol: 다음 시간에 봐요.

Hello Elle

그 고양이를 입양 안 할 걸 그랬어요. means "I regret adopting that cat."

If you want to say "I regret not adopting that cat." : 그 고양이를 입양할 걸 그랬어요. (I should have adopted that cat.)

Hello Helen,

Thanks for posting. Let's take a look at what you wrote (if there are no corrections, good job!):

너 안 만날 걸 그랬어요. (I shouldn’t have met you) --> The sentence is polite, so 'you' needs to be the polite 당신.

그 영화를 볼 걸 그랬어요. (I should have watched that movie)

공원에 친구랑 갈 걸 그랬어요. (I should have gone to the park with my friend) -->친구랑 공원에 갈 걸 그랬어요.
