Hi, everyone, I’m Jaehwi, welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. In this video, we'll be talking about 10 animal words. Let's begin!
1. 야옹 (yaong) “cat meow"
you know when I was a kid I was like 야옹 (yaong) "meow”, or sometimes we just write it down as 냐옹(nyaong), using the N sound, and say 냐옹(nyaong). So 야옹 (yaong) and 냐옹(nyaong) can be are used to say meow in Korean.
고양이는 '야옹'하고 웁니다. (Goyangineun 'yaong'hago umnida.) "Cats cry like meow."
2. 멍멍 (meongmeong) “dog bark”
So for me when a dog barks it sounds like meongmeong, or weongweong, depends on the size of the dog. So in a sentence, you can say,
옆집에 있는 개가 '멍멍'하고 짖기 시작했습니다. (Yeopjibe inneun gaega 'meongmeong'hago jitkki sijakaetsseumnida.) "The dog next door started barking."
3. 으르렁 (eureureong) “lion’s roar"
We go to zoo, and when you hear the lion making some sound, we hear that 으르렁 (eureureong)… it doesn't sound the same, but when we write it out we just use it something like 으르렁 (eureureong). So in a sentence, you can say,
사자가 '으르렁'하고 울어서 깜짝 놀랐습니다. (Sajaga 'eureureong'hago ureoseo kkamjjak nollatsseumnida.) "I was surprised because the lion roared."
4. 꿀꿀 (kkulkkul) “pig’s snort"
So when we write it down we use san sound, and say 꿀꿀 (kkulkkul). So in a sentence, you can say,
어제 꿈에서 돼지가 '꿀꿀'하고 울었습니다. (Eoje kkumeseo dwaejiga 'kkulkkul'hago ureotsseumnida.) “In my dream last night, a pig snorted.”
So Korean people believe that when they see a pig in the dream, there’ll be a lot of good luck, you know, you hear some of your friends saying, I just saw a pig yesterday in my dream so i'm going to buy some lottery.
5. 꼬끼오 (kkokkio) “rooster’s crow”
So in the written Korean we write it down as 꼬끼오 (kkokkio), but when we imitate the sound we say 꼬끼오 (kkokkio). So in a sentence, you can say,
시골에 가면 닭이 '꼬끼오'하고 우는 소리를 들을 수 있습니다. (igore gamyeon dalgi 'kkokkio'hago uneun sorireul deureul su itsseumnida.) "When you go to the countryside, you can hear roosters crowing."
6. 개굴개굴 (gaegulgaegul) “frog’s croak"
You know, it sounds like “croak-quack” or something like that, but we just write it out as 개굴개굴 (gaegulgaegul) when you hear a frog croak.
강가에 가니까 '개굴개굴'하는 소리가 들렸습니다. (Ganggae ganikka 'gaegulgaegul'haneun soriga deullyeotsseumnida.) "When I went to the riverside, I could hear the frogs croaking."
7. 삐약삐약 (ppiyakppiyak) “chick’s peep"
We write it down as 삐약삐약 (ppiyakppiyak) but when we imitate we make some sounds like ppiyakppiyak.
학교를 나가자 '삐약삐약'하는 소리가 들렸습니다. (Hakgyoreul nagaja 'ppiyakppiyak'haneun soriga deullyeotsseumnida.) "When I got out of school, I could hear chicks peeping."
So when I was a kid, usually on Saturday morning or Saturday afternoons, because we had classes and Saturdays in the past, some old ladies they just brought a box with a lot of chicks inside and just sold that to kids.
8. 부엉부엉 (bueongbueong) “owl’s hoot"
I haven't heard owls hoot, but in Korean we call owls as 밤에(bame) because we think that they make some sound like bueongbueong. In a sentence, you can say,
밤에 '부엉부엉'하는 소리가 들렸습니다. (Bame 'bueongbueong'haneun soriga deullyeotsseumnida.) "At night, I could hear owls hooting.”
9. 짹짹 (jjaekjjaek) “bird’s tweet"
When we imitate the sound we say jjaekjjaek, you know, the small birds tweet. In Korean, especially in the countryside, you can hear this kind of jjaekjjaek a lot, because there are a lot of small birds. So in that case, we can say
'짹짹'하는 소리와 함께 일어났습니다. (Jjjaekjjaek'haneun soriwa hamkke ireonatsseumnida.) "I woke up with birds tweeting."
10. 음메 (eumme) “cow’s moo"
So we write it down as 음메 (eumme) but when we make sound using this word, we say eummeeeee, so it’s a little bit long. So eummeeee to imitate the sound of cow’s moo.
So when we imitate sheep sound, we say a part of word mmeeeee, in a high tone; but when we imitate cow’s moo, we say eummeeeee, like in a very low tone. Make sure you say Mmmm at the beginning of 음메 (eumme). So in a sentence we can say,
농장에 가서 '음메' 소리를 들었습니다. (Nongjange gaseo 'eumme' sorireul deureotsseumnida. ) "I heard cows mooing at the farm."
