Hi, everyone, I'm Jae, welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. In this video, we'll be talking about 10 happy words. Let's see what kind of happy words we have!
1. 행복한 (haengbokan) "happy"
So you know, you can be happy with this word for anything, you can say
행복한 날 (haengbokan nal) meaning ”happy day”.
Or 행복한 사람 (haengbokan saram) “happy person”. So you can say 저는 행복한 사람입니다 (Jeoneun haengbokan saramimnida.) to mean "I am a happy person."
2. 사랑 (sarang) "love"
So 사랑 (sarang) is the noun for "love”, so using this word you can say,
사랑은 나를 행복하게 만듭니다. (Sarangeun nareul haengbokage mandeumnida.) "Love makes me happy."
3. 아름다운 (areumdaun) "beautiful"
So first of all, you know, like, “beautiful” can be used only for women, so you can say something like 아름다운 여성 (areumdaun yeoseong) “beautiful woman”, when you talk about someone very beautiful. For me, when I say good food, it's not only about the taste, it’s also something about how beautifully it is, how well it is decorated. So in that case, I can say
아름다운 음식은 나를 행복하게 만듭니다. (Areumdaun eumsigeun nareul haengbokage mandeumnida.) Which literally means ”the beautiful food makes me happy”, or something like “the food that looks beautiful makes me happy.”
4. 웃기는 (utkkineun) "funny"
Whenever I’m depressed I usually watch sitcom, so in this case I can say
웃기는 시트콤은 저를 행복하게 만듭니다. (Utkkineun siteukomeun jeoreul haengbokage mandeumnida.) "Funny sitcoms make me happy."
프란체스카 (peurancheseuka) "Franziska", which is a sitcom about vampire who comes to South Korea, which is very popular in South Korea, I love that. And the sitcom, the good thing that I remember was that like actually the vampires and the aliens were all very good, much better than human beings.
5. 좋아하다 (joahada) "like"
I think everyone has something that they like, and that makes them happy. For me, as I keep talking about food, but like for some people it'll be about songs, and actors, like actresses, in that case you can say something like
내가 좋아하는 노래를 들으면 행복해집니다. (Naega joahaneun noraereul deureumyeon haengbokaejimnida.) "When I listen to a song I like, I become happy.”
So actually in Korea 좋아하다 (joahada) can mean both “to like” and “to love“, so you can figure out what is the meaning of the verb based on the context. Your Korean boyfriend or girlfriend might say that 난 널 좋아해 (Nan neol joahae) meaning “I like you”, but it actually means something like ”I love you."
6. 친절한 (chinjeolhan) "kind"
Actually that's one thing that makes me happy, when I see someone 친절한 (chinjeolhan) "kind”, because someone, you know, spend their time and spend their effort for me personally, so that makes me so happy. So in a sentence, we can say
오늘 아침에 친절한 사람을 만나서 정말 행복해졌습니다. (Oneul achime chinjeolhan sarameul mannaseo jeongmal haengbokaejyeotsseumnida.) "This morning I met a kind person, so I became happy."
7. 침착한 (chimchakan) "calm"
In a sentence, I can say
우리 상사는 정말 침착합니다. (Uri sangsaneun jeongmal chimchakamnida.) "My superior is very calm."
So you know, in a meeting, I’ll be like… talking a lot, but the superior would be like, just listening to them, and just say something, you know, just one or two sentences, that makes everyone happy.
8. 기대하는 (gidaehaneun) "hopeful"
Recently there was a survey saying 20’s are the happiest group of all age groups, so after the graduation, you know, when you at a college or high school, and then there are a lot of things that you want to do, like 기대하는 (gidaehaneun) "hopeful”, saying
기대하는 직업 (gidaehaneun jigeop) "hopeful job”,
기대하는 미래 (gidaehaneun mirae) "hopeful future”.
And in their 20’s they can make that happen.
9. 대단한 (daedanhan) "great"
I think working with a lot of great people is the one way making me happy, and now too, like, I’m working with a lot of great people in my company, so in that case I can say something like,
대단한 사람들과 일을 하고 있어서 매우 행복합니다. (Daedanhan saramdeulgwa ireul hago isseoseo maeu haengbokamnida.) "I'm so happy because I work with a lot of great people."
10. 웃다 (utda) “to laugh"
This is the verb meaning “to laugh”, and you can find it in the noun, something like 웃음 (useum), like, ”laughing”. For example,
그 사람은 웃음이 참 많습니다. (Geu sarameun useumi cham mansseumnida.) meaning ”He’s laughing a lot.”
You know that’s kind of the action that can make you happy, too, or indicate that you're happy, so for example you can say
그 사람은 행복한 것 같아. 매일매일 웃고 있으니까. (Geu sarameun haengbokan geot gata. Maeilmaeil utkko isseunikka.) “He seems happy because he’s laughing every day."
Ok, that's all 10 happy wards! I hope you use this kind of words more often, so that you can be more happy. Please make sure to subscribe and I'll see you next time.
다음 시간에 뵙겠습니다 (Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida) 안녕히 계세요 (annyeonghi gyeseyo).
