INTRODUCTION
Kyejin: 안녕하세요 김계진입니다.
Jaehwi: 이재휘입니다.! Welcome back to KoreanClass101.com! Korean Rats Love Korean Drama!
Kyejin: 이번 레슨에서는 어떤 내용을 배우나요?
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn idiomatic expressions that use the word “쥐” meaning a “rat.”
Kyejin: KoreanClass101.com 리스너 분들중에는 한국 드라마를 좋아하시는 분들이 많으실 것 같은데요. 이번 레슨에서는 한국의 드라마에 나오는 대화를 들어볼겁니다.
Jaehwi: The conversation is taken from a Korean TV soap opera. The conversation is between Mina and her colleague, who has seniority over Mina.
Kyejin: 미나와 미나의 직장 선배 사이에 일어나는 대화이기 때문에 미나는 존댓말을 선배는 반말을 사용합니다.
Jaehwi: Mina will use formal Korean, and her senior will use informal Korean. Let's listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jaehwi: 역시 한국 드라마는 싸우는 장면이 많은 것 같아요.
Kyejin: 네, 아무래도 한국에서 인기가 많은 “막장 드라마”에 나오는 장면같죠? 재휘씨 막장 드라마에 대해 들어보셨나요?
Jaehwi: Of course, 막장 means a “dead end,” and “막장 드라마” is a soap opera that is far-fetched to the point that it looks so unreal and ludicrous, right?
Kyejin: 네, 드라마의 줄거리나 등장 인물들의 캐릭터가 너무 심하다 싶을 정도로 말이 안 되는 드라마. 혹은 비현실적인 드라마를 “막장 드라마”라고 해요.
Jaehwi: 저도 그런 드라마 많이 봤어요. 예를 들어 두 주인공이 사랑에 빠졌는데 알고 보니 친 남매 brothers and sisters 였다든가 말이죠.
Kyejin: 맞아요.
Jaehwi: I think our listeners also watched some Korean drama that’s pretty unrealistic. But actually, they’re very interesting to watch!
Kyejin: 그렇죠? 그렇기 때문에 사람들이 한국 드라마를 많이 시청하는 것 같아요. 다음에 어떤 내용이 나올지 예측할 수 없으니까요.
Jaehwi: Right. Okay, now onto the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Jaehwi: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s the first word?
Kyejin: 훈계
Jaehwi: “lecture” or “preaching”
Kyejin: 흔히 이렇게 많이 사용해요. ‘훈계하지마!’
Jaehwi: “Don’t give me a lecture.” or “Don’t tell me what to do.”
Kyejin: ‘훈계'라는 단어에서 “훈”은 “가르치다,” “계”는 “경고하다,” 라는 뜻의 한자어입니다. 그래서 “훈계하다”는 누군가가 잘못한 것에 대해서 가르쳐준다 라는 의미로 사용합니다.
Jaehwi: Most of the time, “훈계하다” is used when an older person gives advice to a younger person. Therefore, if a younger person tries to “훈계” to an older person, you would think it’s very rude.
Kyejin: 맞아요, “훈계”는 대개 나이가 많거나 사회적으로 높은 위치에 있는 사람이 어리거나 낮은 사람에게 해주는 거니까요.
Jaehwi: 그럼 ‘훈계'라는 단어가 들어간 예문 몇개 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 아버지는 밤마다 식구들에게 긴 훈계를 하신다.
Jaehwi: My father always gives a long lecture to my family at night.
Kyejin: 훈계 좀 그만 하시죠
Jaehwi: “Stop preaching me.” 자, 다음 단어 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 생쥐
Jaehwi: rats
Kyejin: 생쥐는 크기가 조그만 쥐를 가르키는데요. 실험용이나 애완용으로 기르는 쥐입니다.
Jaehwi: So it’s like a small cute one that would be in a cartoon. 그런데 한국말에는 “쥐” 라는 단어도 있는데요, “생쥐”와 “쥐”는 어떻게 다른 가요?
Kyejin: “생쥐”는 조그만 쥐를 말한다면 “쥐”는 대개 크고 사람들에게 해를 끼치는 쥐를 말해요.
Jaehwi: And “생쥐” is used to describe some personality type.
Kyejin: 예 맞아요, 생쥐는 고양이를 피해서 잘 도망치잖아요? 그리고 어두운 곳에서 주로 생활하구요. 그래서 자신의 이익을 위해서 다른 사람 몰래 빠져나가는 사람을 ‘생쥐같은 사람'이라고 부르기도 합니다.
Jaehwi: So it’s like someone selfish. 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 그는 일만 시키면 생쥐 같이 잘도 빠져 나간다.
Jaehwi: He runs away like a mouse whenever he is given work to do. 마지막 단어 보실까요?
Kyejin: 쥐뿔
Jaehwi something very tiny/ something worth nothing
Kyejin: “쥐”는 “mouse” 이구요, “뿔” 은 “horn” 이란 뜻입니다. 그래서 literally 쥐뿔은 “mouse horn” 의미입니다.
Jaehwi: 하지만 ‘쥐'는 뿔이 없잖아요.
Kyejin: 맞아요. 그리고 쥐가 뿔 horn이 있어도 정말 작겠죠. 이렇게 “쥐뿔”은 아주 작고 보잘것 없는 것 something small and useless 한 것을 의미합니다.
Jaehwi: 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 그는 쥐뿔도 모르면서 아는 체를 너무 한다.
Jaehwi: He doesn’t know anything at all, but always pretends to know everything.
Kyejin: 여기서 그는 “쥐뿔도" 모른다! 는 “아무것도” 모른다.와 같은 의미라고 생각하면 되요.
Jaehwi: 예문 하나도 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 그녀는 쥐뿔도 없으면서 돈이 많이 있는 척 한다.
Jaehwi: She doesn’t have a penny, but pretends that she’s rich. So basically when you want to say 아무것 meaning ‘anything’, you can simply replace it with the word 쥐뿔. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn idiomatic expressions that use the word “쥐” meaning “rats.”
Kyejin: 이번 시간에는 “rat”을 뜻하는 단어 “쥐”가 들어간 표현들을 살펴 보겠습니다.
Jaehwi: In Korean, “쥐” has the connotation of something very small and helpless, or someone who is deceitful and does something in secret.
Kyejin: 네 맞아요. “쥐”라는 단어는 관용적으로 idiomatically 그렇게 좋은 의미로 사용되지 않습니다.
Jaehwi: 이번 레슨에 나온 대화에서도 서로 싸우면서 ‘쥐'가 들어간 표현을 자주 사용했는데요. 우선 첫번째 표현 살펴 볼까요?
Kyejin: 쥐도 궁지에 물리면 고양이를 문다.
Jaehwi: A mouse can bite a cat if it’s cornered.
Kyejin: 이 표현은 쥐처럼 약하고 힘이 없는 사람도 최후의 순간 at the final moment 에는 갑자기 무서워질수도 있다는 의미입니다.
Jaehwi: 그러니까 약해 보인다고 무시하지 말라라는 뜻으로 이 표현을 사용할 수 있겠네요. 그럼 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 내 여동생 자꾸 놀리지마. 쥐도 궁지에 몰리면 고양이를 문다고.
Jaehwi: Stop picking on my sister. A mouse can bite a cat if it’s cornered. 그럼 ‘쥐'와 관련된 다음 표현 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 고양이가 쥐 생각 한다고. 어디서 훈계야?
Jaehwi: “Don't be such a hypocrite! How dare you lecture me?” Here, ‘고양이가 쥐 생각하다' literally means ‘A cat takes care of a rat.’ right?
Kyejin: 맞아요. 하지만 보통 고양이는 그렇게 하지 않죠? 만약 고양이가 쥐를 걱정해준다면, 그건 뭔가 다른 생각이 있어서일테구요.
Jaehwi: 맞아요. 겉으로는 잘 해주고 있지만, 속으로는 잡아 먹을 생각을 하고 있는 것처럼 말이죠.
Kyejin: 그렇게 이 표현은 겉으로는 잘 해주는 것 같아도 속으로는 다른 마음을 품고 있을 때 when someone has a secret plot in mind, 사용할 수 있는 표현입니다.
Jaehwi: That’s why it can be translated as “stop playing the hypocrite.” 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 고양이가 쥐 생각 한다더니, 내 생각 하는 척 하지마.
Jaehwi: Don’t play the hypocrite, I know you don’t care about me. 자, 그럼 ‘쥐'와 관련된 다음 표현 볼까요?
Kyejin: 너 그러다가 내가 쥐도새도 모르게 널 이 회사에서 쫓아내 버리는 수가 있어.
Jaehwi: I could kick you out of this company without anybody knowing.
Kyejin: 이 문장을 보면 ‘쥐도새도 모르게'
Jaehwi: literally ‘without letting rats and birds know.’
Kyejin: 라는 표현이 사용되었는데요. 어딜가나 ‘쥐'나 ‘새'를 쉽게 볼 수 있는데, 이런 쥐도새도 모른다는 의미는 ‘아무도 모르게'라는 의미로 생각할 수 있습니다.
Jaehwi: 그래서 “쥐도 새도 모르게”는 아무도 모르게 to do something without a trace 라는 의미로 사용되는거구요. 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 그녀는 쥐도 새도 모르게 사라졌다.
Jaehwi: She vanished without a trace. 마지막으로 표현 하나만 더 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 이 회사에 있는 한 넌 그냥 독 안에 든 쥐야.
Jaehwi: You are like a rat in a trap as long as you are here
Kyejin: 여기서 ‘독안에 든 쥐'라는 표현이 사용되었는데요. 여기서 “독” 은 a “jar”란 뜻입니다. “독안에 든 쥐”는 a rat in a jar” 즉, 덫에 걸린 것처럼 꼼짝 할 수 없는 상태나 처지를 뜻합니다.
Jaehwi: So it’s like a rat in a trap, who has no way out. 예문 살펴볼까요?
Kyejin: 나는 독안에 든 쥐처럼 아무것도 할 수 없었다.
Jaehwi: I couldn’t do anything like a rat in a trap. There are other expressions that use the word “쥐,” but we can’t cover them here. So please see the lesson notes for more information.
