INTRODUCTION
Jaehwi: 안녕하세요. KoreanClass101.com 리스너여러분, 이재휘입니다.
Lan: 안녕하세요. 김란입니다.
Jaehwi: Conquering Marriage Mountain in Korea
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to make words using frequently used Chinese-based suffixes. This conversation takes place at work between Kim, team manager, and Lee, assistant manager. The speakers are coworkers, so Kim will be speaking in informal Korean and Lee will be speaking in formal Korean.
Lan: 자, 그럼 들어볼까요?
DIALOGUE
Jaehwi: 이번엔 영어가 들어갑니다.
이대리 결혼을 앞두고 저 정말 걱정이 태산입니다.
Looking ahead to marriage has got me really worried (lit. "my worries are as big as a mountain").
김팀장 왜, 무슨 일이야?
Why? What happened?
이대리 옆 팀 유리씨가 저랑 사귀잖아요. 근데 눈이 너무 높아요. 서울에 아파트 없으면 결혼은 꿈도 꾸지 말라고 하구요. 요즘 아파트 하나는 결혼에 필수적이잖아요.
You know, I'm dating Yuri from the next team over. But she expects too much (lit. "her eyes are high"). She says I shouldn't even dream of marrying her unless I have an apartment in Seoul. A Seoul apartment is a prerequisite to marriage these days.
김팀장 뭐.. 결혼 이야기하면 다들 요즘엔 이해타산적으로 바뀌긴 하지만, 유리씨까지 그럴 줄 몰랐네.
Well, I've heard that more people are approaching marriage like a business deal, but I didn't know Yuri was that way.
이대리 이번 주에는 잠깐 결혼식 준비 비용 알아봤거든요. 왜 다들 상업적이던지 모르겠어요! 심지어 돈을 주면 친구대행으로 결혼식 축하해주는 서비스도 있더라구요. 결혼식 맞춤형 서비스는 더 비싸구요. 지금이라도 의대가서 의사가 될까봐요.
I checked out the cost of wedding preparations this week. I had no idea it was so commercialized! There's even a service where you pay to have people come to the wedding and act like your friends. And custom services are more expensive. I'll have to go to med school and become a doctor JUST to afford it.
김팀장 그런 식이면 나는 결혼 못했을거야. 우리 와이프는 그런 투정은 안 했지. 작은 집에서 시작해도 괜찮다고 했으니까.
I couldn't get married that way. My wife didn't complain at all. She didn't mind starting out in a small house.
이대리 아, 부럽습니다.
Oh, I envy you.
김팀장 생각난김에 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않은 우리 와이프한테 전화해야겠다. 목소리 듣고 싶어 죽겠는데? 그럼 있다 봐.
Mm, this makes me want to call my lovely (lit. "won't hurt even if I put her in my eye") wife. I'm dying to hear her voice. You stay put.
이대리 아, 팀장님! 부러워 죽겠습니다.
Oh, manager, I'm dying of envy!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jaehwi: 얼마전에 본 한국 다큐멘터리에서 이런 단어를 봤어요. Honeymoon Poor
Lan: 허니문 푸어? 그러니까 결혼하자마자 가난하게 된다는 의미인가요?
Jaehwi: Right. It says that people become poor when they marry because they have to spend so much on the wedding and buying a home.
Lan: 그 이야기는 저도 많이 들었어요. 특히 서울의 집값이 점점 높아지면서 더 많은 돈을 내야 한다고 하더라구요.
Jaehwi: 네 평균 2억원 정도를 준비해야한다고 하더라구요. The documentary says a couple should have about 170,000 US dollars for the ceremony and the housing.
Lan: 그러다보니 한국 사람들은 결혼을 더 늦게 하는 것 같아요.
Jaehwi: 맞아요. 월급으로는 결혼비용을 내기 어려우니까, 점점 더 늦게 결혼을 하기도 하구요. And they have children in their late 30s or later because of financial problems.
Lan: 그래도 최근에는 결혼식을 간단하게 하면서 비용을 줄이는 경우도 많이 있다고 하더라구요.
Jaehwi: 네. 여러가지 다양한 방법이 나와서 결혼하는 커플들의 부담이 줄었으면 좋겠어요.
Lan: 자, 그럼 이번 대화에 나온 단어들을 살펴볼까요?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Lan: 자, 그럼 이번 레슨에 나온 중요한 단어와 표현들을 알아볼까요? 첫번째 표현입니다. "걱정이 태산이다"
Jaehwi: "to be really worried" literally “My worries are as big as the mountain Tae san”) //
Lan: 결혼을 앞두고 저 정말 걱정이 태산입니다.
Jaehwi: Looking ahead to marriage, it got me really worried. (literally, my worries are as big as the mountain Tae san)
Lan: 그럼 다음 표현 살펴볼까요? '꿈도 꾸지 마라'
Jaehwi: "Don't even dream of [blank]...!" 이 표현이 사용된 예문을 들어볼까요?"
Lan: 나랑 결혼은 꿈도 꾸지 마라.
Jaehwi: "Don't even DREAM of marrying me." // "꿈을 꾸다"는 to dream 이라는 뜻이잖아요? 그래서 꿈을 꾸지 마라 는 말은 'to not dream of '라는 뜻이 되구요.
Lan: 그러니까 이런 의미로 생각하면 되겠네요. '나랑 결혼은 생각도 하지 마라'
Jaehwi: Don't even THINK of marrying me.
Lan: 그리고 이번 대화에서는 지금까지 배웠던 여러가지 표현들이 다시 한 번 소개되었어요.
Jaehwi: 한 번 같이 살펴볼까요?
Lan: 옆 팀 유리씨가 저랑 사귀잖아요. 근데 눈이 너무 높아요.
Jaehwi: I'm dating Yuri from the next team over. But she expects too much (lit. "her eyes are high") "눈이 높다"라는 말은 over confident 혹은 to expect too much 라는 의미였죠?
Lan: 그러니까 지나치게 자신감이 쎄고 기대하는 게 높아서, 결혼할 사람에게 너무 많은 것을 기대한다 라는 의미네요.
Jaehwi: 자, 다음 표현 볼까요?
Lan: 생각난김에 눈에 넣어도 아프지 않은 우리 와이프한테 전화해야겠다.
Jaehwi: Mm, this makes me want to call my lovely wife (lit. "It won't hurt even if I put her in my eye")
Lan: 그리고 이 표현도 나왔었구요. "아, 팀장님! 부러워 죽겠습니다."
Jaehwi: Oh, manager, I'm dying of envy!
Lan: 이번 시리즈에서 배운 여러가지 표현들은 평소에 대화할 때에도 잘 사용해보세요. // 자, 그럼 이번 레슨의 주요 문법표현 알아볼까요?

Lesson focus

Lan: 이번 레슨에서는 한국어에서 자주 사용되는 한자어 접미사를 배워볼거에요.
Jaehwi: The focus of this lessons is the Chinese based suffixes frequently used in Korean words.
Lan: 저번 시간에는 단어의 앞에 추가할 수 있는 단어인 '접두사'에 대해서 배웠었죠?
Jaehwi: 이번 레슨에서는 단어의 뒤에 붙여서 의미를 추가할 수 있는 '접미사'에 대해서 배워볼겁니다.
Lan: 첫번째 단어입니다. '적'
Jaehwi: 적(的) is a suffix that changes nouns into adjectives. 예들을 살펴볼까요?
Lan: 상업/상업적
Jaehwi: Commerce, Commercial. The suffix '적' turns a noun into an adjective. 그리고 이 때, '적' 뒤에는 '인' 이라는 조사 particle 이 같이 붙습니다. '상업//적//인' 과 같이 말이죠.
Lan: 그래서 이런 문장을 만들 수 있어요. '상업적인 방송국'
Jaehwi: Commercial TV station.
Lan: 그리고 또 다른 접미사 '화' 역시 자주 사용됩니다. 예를 들어서, '상업화'
Jaehwi: Commercialization or to become commercialized. '화'는 한자어로 becoming 이라는 의미를 갖고 있어요. 그래서 '화'라는 단어가 붙으면 to become something 이라는 의미가 됩니다.그래서 ‘상업화'는 ‘to become commercialized’라는 의미가 되구요.
Lan: 예문을 볼까요? “크리스마스가 상업화되었다.”
Jaehwi: Christmas has become commercialized.
Lan: 개인 이라는 단어를 이용해서 다시 한 번 의미를 살펴볼까요? 개인 / 개인적
Jaehwi: Person, Personal
Lan: 개인/ 개인화
Jaehwi: Person, Personalization
Lan: 이렇게 '적'이나 '화'와 같은 접미사를 이용해서 다양한 의미를 만들 수 있습니다.
Jaehwi: 이번 레슨의 레슨노트를 확인해보시면 또 다른 접미사를 확인해볼 수 있으니 꼭 확인해보세요
