INTRODUCTION
Jaehwi: 안녕하세요. KoreanClass101.com 리스너여러분, 이재휘입니다.
Lan: 안녕하세요. 김란입니다.
Jaehwi: Pass the Salt in Korea 입니다.
Lan: 오늘은 어떤 내용을 알아보죠?
Jaehwi: 오늘은 맛에 대한 표현인 '-가 짜다' '-가 싱겁다' 에 대한 관용표현을 배워볼 거에요.
Lan: 오늘은 김팀장과 친구 지혜씨가 식당에서 대화를 합니다. 두 사람은 친구이기 때문에 반말로 이야기합니다.
Jaehwi: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use the Idiomatic phrases '-가 짜다', and '-가 싱겁다'. This conversation takes place at a restaurant between Manager Kim and Choi (Kim's friend). The speakers are friends, so they will be speaking informal Korean
Lan: 자, 그럼 들어볼까요?
DIALOGUE
Jaehwi: 이번엔 영어가 들어갑니다.
(식당에서)
(at a restaurant)
김팀장: 지혜야, 저번엔 미안했어. 일 관련해서 중요한 분이어서..
Jihye, I'm sorry about last time. He's an important person to me at work, so...
최지혜 괜찮아. 뭐, 나도 막 가려던 참이니까. 그래서 얼굴이 풀린거 보니 저번 일은 잘 풀렸나보네.
It's okay. See, I was about to leave too. You seem relaxed today (lit. "Your face has come untied"), so it seems your work is going well.
김팀장: 응. 덕분에. 그리고 부장님 일도 잘 챙겨줘서 고마워. 내가 쏠테니 맛있는거 시켜. 아, 근데 주희가 그러는데 너 최근 새로 남자 만난다며?
Yes, thanks to you. And thank you for taking care of my manager. I'll buy you dinner, so get something delicious. By the way, Juhee told me you're seeing a new guy these days...?
최지혜 만난다며가 아니고 만났다며. 과거의 남자야.
Not seeing, saw. He is the past.
김팀장: 또? 뭐가 안 좋았어?
Again? What went wrong?
최지혜 말도 마. 짜도 짜도 그런 짠돌이가 없어.
Ugh, I've never seen such a tightwad (타잇 와드) (lit. "someone so salty").
김팀장: 왜. 음식을 잘 못해서?
Is it because he's not good at cooking?
최지혜 그걸 농담이라고 해? 매일매일 더치페이에다가 선물 한 번 없고. 가끔은 내가 돈을 더 많이 쓴다니까?
Are you kidding? Every day we went dutch. // He never gave me any presents. And sometimes, I spent more than he did!
김팀장: 정말?
For real?
최지혜 심지어 생일선물이라는게 스타벅스 커피 한잔이 다였으니 말 다했지 뭐. 게다가 싱겁기는 얼마나 싱거운지. 농담이라고 하는게 죄다 재미없고 썰렁하기만 했다니까. 그래서 헤어졌어.
Even for my birthday, he bought me a cup of Starbucks coffee, and that was it. On top of that, he was boring (lit "not salty enough"). His jokes were so unfunny, they left me frozen. That's why I broke up with him.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Lan: 요즘에는 한국에서도 더치페이 하는 사람들이 많아지고 있죠?
Jaehwi: Right, more people are going dutch when they pay at restaurants. 하지만 데이트를 할 때에는 더치페이는 잘 하지 않아요.
Lan:
It seems like there more girls paying more than guys, especially if she is older than her boyfriend.
Lan: 하지만 그렇다고 하더라도 데이트할 때 더치페이 하는 건 아직까지도 조금 무리인 것 같아요.
Lan: 자, 그럼 오늘 대화에 나온 단어들을 살펴볼까요?

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Lan: 자, 그럼 이번 레슨에 나온 중요한 단어와 표현들을 알아볼까요? 첫번째 단어입니다. '풀리다'
Jaehwi: to get easier, to get lighter. '풀리다'라는 동사는 to get loose 라는 의미죠?
Lan: 네. 예를 들어서 신발끈이 풀리다
Jaehwi: shoelaces(슈즈레이시스) get loose. 이 풀리다 라는 동사는 관용적으로 '감정'이나 '일'에 대해서도 사용할 수 있어요. Idiomatically, you can use the verb 풀리다 for talking about someone’s mood, or work
Lan: 얼굴이 풀리다
Jaehwi: The mood has lightened. Literally, someone's face gets loose 스트레스가 많으면 끈에 꽁꽁 묶인 것같은 느낌이죠? When you feel stressed, you feel like something is tightening you up, right?
Lan: 그러다가 스트레스가 없어지면 그런 느낌도 없어지구요.
Jaehwi: 네 맞아요. 그래서 한국어에서는 스트레스가 없어져서 기분이 좋아졌을 때 '얼굴이 풀리다'라고 이야기할 수 있어요. That's why Korean people use the verb 풀리다 when you feel relaxed.
Lan: 예문을 살펴볼까요? "일이 잘 풀려서 얼굴이 풀렸어요."
Jaehwi: "My work is going well now, so I'm feeling better."
Lan: 여기에서 '일이 잘 풀리다' 라는 표현이 사용되었죠?
Jaehwi: 네. 일이 잘 풀리다 라는 표현 역시 work is loosening(루즈닝) up 이라는 표현이에요, 그래서 the work is going well 이라는 뜻으로 사용됩니다.
Lan: 자, 다음 단어를 알아볼까요? 다음 단어는 '쏘다'
Jaehwi: to treat someone. 쏘다 literally means 'to shoot'.
Lan: 맞아요. 예를 들면 총을 쏘다
Jaehwi: to fire a gun
Lan: 하지만 어떤 사람이 모든 음식을 다 계산할 때에도 이 동사를 사용할 수 있어요.
Jaehwi: But you can use this verb when someone pays for everything at a restaurant. 자, 예문을 살펴볼까요?
Lan: 내가 오늘 음식 다 쏠게
Jaehwi: I'll buy every meal today. Literally, I'll shoot every meal today.
Lan: 정말 자주 사용하는 단어이지만, '쏘다'라는 표현은 친구들하고만 사용할 수 있어요.
Jaehwi: Right, you can use this verb only in informal situations like 내가 쏠게.
Lan: 만약 formal (포멀)한 상황이라면, 이렇게 이야기해보세요. '제가 사겠습니다'
Jaehwi: I'll buy this.
Lan: 자, 그럼 오늘의 문법 표현 알아볼까요?

Lesson focus

Lan: 오늘은 '짜다', '싱겁다'라는 단어를 사용한 관용표현에 대해서 알아볼겁니다.
Jaehwi: The focus of this lesson is Idiomatic expressions that use the verb 짜다 ("to be salty") and 싱겁다 (tasteless)
Lan: 첫번째 표현입니다. '그 사람은 짜다'
Jaehwi: That guy is a tightward. Literally that guy is salty.
Lan: 한국어에서는 짜다, 싱겁다와 같이 맛에 대한 단어를 자주 사용하는 것 같아요.
Jaehwi: Right, Korean people often use verbs about taste to describe someone’s character. 그 중에 가장 많이 사용하는 단어가 '짜다' to be salty라는 동사입니다. 예문을 살펴볼까요?
Lan: 그 사람은 너무 짜서 나한테는 아무것도 사주지 않았다.
Jaehwi: The guy is such a tightwad - he hasn't bought me anything so far." literally, "That guy is too salty - he hasn't bought me anything so far." 이 문장에서, '그 사람은 너무 짜다'라는 표현이 나왔죠? 그 사람은 짜다 라는 표현은 He's salty 라는 의미가 아니라, he's a tightward or he's not spending money on someone else 라는 의미로 이해하면 됩니다.
Lan: 그리고 이런 사람에 대한 별명 nickname 도 있어요. '짠돌이'
Jaehwi: salty guy. tight-ward.
Lan: 그래서 간단하게 이렇게 이야기할 수 있습니다. '그 사람은 짠돌이야.'
Jaehwi: He's a tight-ward, literally, he's a salty guy.
Lan: 자, 그리고 '짜다' 말고 '싱겁다'라는 단어도 함께 알아볼까요?
Jaehwi: 싱겁다 means 'tasteless' 싱겁다 라는 단어를 이용하면 어떤 표현이 있을까요?
Lan: 이 김치는 싱겁다.
Jaehwi: This Kimchi is tasteless. 김치 맛이 별로 없을 때처럼 맛이 없다 라는 의미로 '싱겁다'라는 단어를 사용할 수 있어요. 그리고 사람한테도 이 단어를 사용할 수 있죠?
Lan: 네. 그 사람은 싱겁다
Jaehwi: That guy is tasteless. 사람이 맛이 없다? 라는 의미인가요?
Lan: 그것보다는 그 사람이 "재미없다" 라는 말을 하고 싶을 때 이 표현을 사용할 수 있어요.
Jaehwi: 그러니까 그 사람은 싱겁다 라는 말은 That guy is not funny. 혹은 that guy is boring 이라는 뜻인거죠.
Lan: 그리고 재미없는 농담
Jaehwi: unfunny jokes, bad jokes
Lan: 에 대해서 이야기할 때도 간단하게 '싱거운 농담'이라고 말할 수 있어요.
Jaehwi: 예문 하나 살펴볼까요?
Lan: 내 남자친구는 싱거워서 싱거운 농담만 해.
Jaehwi: My boyfriend is boring, so he is always making bad jokes"

Outro

Jaehwi: Listener 여러분은 '짠 사람' 하고 '싱거운 사람' 중에 누가 더 좋으세요?
Lan: 여러분의 생각을 KoreanClass101.com 에 코멘트로 남겨주세요.
Jaehwi: 그럼 좋은 하루 보내세요.
Lan: 다음 시간에 만나요.
