| Jaehwi: You know, when I was dating him, I was happy enough to die on the spot with no regrets. To think it would turn out like this...I barely left my house for the first month. I was a living corpse. I literally felt like I was dying. |

| Jaehwi: So that's why I couldn't reach you for a while. So how is it you two are still in touch? |

| Jaehwi: 정말 크게 싸우면 다시 보기 싫어지잖아요. 그러니까, 우리는 다시 보지 않을거니까 잘 먹고 잘 살아라. We’re not going to see each other again, so take care of yourself. 같은 의미인 것 같아요. |

| Jaehwi: I feel empty inside. 이럴 때 간단하게 '그래서 배가 고파요' I feel hungry라고 이야기할 수 있잖아요? 그런데 그렇게 이야기하지 않고 '속이 허해요'라고 이야기하는 이유는 뭘까요? |
| Lan: 둘 다 같은 의미이지만, 배고프다보다 속이 허하다가 조금 더 formal(포멀)하잖아요? 그래서 나이가 많은 사람하고 이야기할 때는 '배고프다'보다 '허하다'라는 표현을 더 많이 사용하게 되는 것 같아요. |
| Jaehwi: 네. 배고프다보다 간접적이기 때문에 조금 더 예의있게 느낄 수 있어요. Since the verb 허하다 is more indirect, it can be more polite. |
| Lan: 그리고 배고플 때 말고 다른 경우에도 ‘허하다'라는 표현을 사용할 수 있어요. 예를 들면 ‘마음이 허하다'. |
| Jaehwi: I feel empty in my heart. 사랑하는 사람과 헤어진 다음에 이런 표현을 사용할 수 있어요. I feel lonely라는 의미죠. |

| Lan: 예를 들면, 정말 많은 돈을 잃어버렸는데 다음날 다시 찾았을 때요? |
| Jaehwi: Right. You could use the phrase '죽다가 살아나다' if you lost a lot of money, but found it the next day. 돈을 잃어버렸을 때는 정말 '죽었다' I'm dead 라는 느낌이었겠죠? 하지만 다음날 돈을 찾았으니까 '살아나다' to come back to life’ 라는 표현을 사용할 수 있구요. 다른 표현은 뭐가 있을까요? |
