INTRODUCTION
Brandon: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Brandon: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “How tall are you?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 키가 얼마정도 입니까?
Brandon: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 키
Brandon: meaning “body height” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 키
Brandon: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 키
{Pause}
Brandon: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 가
Brandon: the topic marking particle.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 가
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 가
(ga)
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 키가
(kiga)
{pause}
Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 얼마정도
(eolmajeongdo)
Brandon: meaning “how much”, “how tall”, “how long.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 얼마정도
(eolmajeongdo)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 얼마정도
(eolmajeongdo)
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 키가 얼마정도
(kiga eolmajeongdo)
{pause}
Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 입니-
(imni)
Brandon: the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 입니다
Brandon: meaning something like “is.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 입니
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 입니
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kyejin: 키가 얼마정도입니
(kiga eolmajeongdoimni)
{pause}
Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 까
(kka)
Brandon: the question marker.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 까
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 까
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kyejin: 키가 얼마정도입니까?
(kiga eolmajeongdoimnikka?)
{pause}
Brandon: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question How tall are you??
Kyejin: 180cm입니다.
(180센티입니다 180sentiimnida.)
Brandon: "I'm 180 cm tall.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kyejin: (Slow) 180cm입니다.
(180센티입니다 180sentiimnida.)
{pause}
South Korean people use "centimeters" to talk about height. The units ‘foot’ and ‘inch’ are not common.
Brandon: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kyejin: 180
(baekpalssip)
Brandon: meaning “180.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 180
(baekpalssip)
Brandon: Now repeat
Kyejin: 180
(baekpalssip)
{Pause}
Brandon: And next
Kyejin: cm
(센티 senti)
Brandon: meaning “centimeters”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) cm
(센티 senti)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: cm
(센티 senti)
{Pause}
Brandon: And after that
Kyejin: 입니다
Brandon: meaning something like “is.”
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 입니다
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 입니다
{Pause}
Brandon: Listen to the speaker say, “I'm 180 cm tall”, and then repeat.
Kyejin: 180cm입니다.
(180입니다. baekpalssibimnida.)
{pause}
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 180 with 175.
Kyejin: 175
(baekchilssibo)
Brandon: 175
Kyejin: (slow) 175 (baekchilssibo)
(regular) 175 (baekchilssibo)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 175
Kyejin: 175cm입니다.
(175센티입니다. baekchilssiboimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 180. Say “I'm 175 cm tall.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 175cm입니다.
(175센티입니다. baekchilssiboimnida.)
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 175 with 153.
Kyejin: 153
(baegosipssam)
Brandon: 153
Kyejin: (slow) 153 (baegosipssam)
(regular) 153 (baegosipssam)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 153
Kyejin: 153cm입니다.
(153센티입니다. baegosipssamsentiimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 175 with 153. Say “I'm 153 cm tall.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 153cm입니다.
(153센티입니다. baegosipssamsentiimnida.)
Brandon: To expand on the pattern, replace 153 with 194.
Kyejin: 194
(baekkusipsa)
Brandon: 194
Kyejin: (slow) 194 (baekkusipsa)
(regular) 194 (baekkusipsa)
Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with 194
Kyejin: 194cm입니다.
(194센티입니다. baekkusipsasentiimnida.)
Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace 153 with 194. Say “I'm 194 cm tall.”
{pause}
Kyejin: 194cm입니다.
(194센티입니다. baekkusipsasentiimnida.)
QUIZ
Brandon: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting South Korea and someone asks you how tall you are. You are 180 centimeters tall. Respond to the question.
Kyejin: 키가 얼마정도 입니까?
(kiga eolmajeongdoimnikka?)
(five seconds) 180cm입니다.
(180센티입니다 180sentiimnida.)

{pause}

Hi 아린,

Thank you for sharing. Just remember that you cannot use 'imnida' separately, it needs to be attached to 센티.

-->센티입니다.

Hi Kenya,

Thank you for posting. Just remember to put a space between the numbers and 센티 (unless you are writing the numbers in actual numbers instead of Hangul, in that case you would put it together)

Hi Nisha,

153센티 입니다. :)

Yes, 100 is 백.

"정도" means degree.

"얼마정도" means how much/about how.

Hope this helps. :)

Regards,

Claire

안녕하세요 !

153샌티 입니다. I am 153 cm tall. In other words, I am short :smile:

I couldn't quite catch how the number 100 was pronounced. Is it 백? Also, after the lesson "How long have you been studying Korean?" I noticed that 얼마 meant "how". Am I right? If I am, would 정도 mean "tall"?

감사합니다 ! :smile:
