Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요, 선현우입니다.

Keith: Hey, Keith here. Picture video vocab #3, The Office.

Hyunwoo: Wow! It’s already number three.

Keith: Yeah. Hyeonussi, Do you know that TV show, The Office?

Hyunwoo: 아, 들어본 적 있어요.

Keith: The English one or the American one?

Hyunwoo: The American one probably.

Keith: Ah well, it started out in England.

Hyunwoo: 아, 진짜요?

Keith: Yeah, it’s The Office. It’s kind of crazy, that show.

Hyunwoo: Ah how?

Keith: Ah that -

Hyunwoo: 재미있어요?

Keith: Yeah 재미있는데요, Kind of crazy. Yeah, we are talking about the office today, ah not that office, the crazy one. Just a regular everyday normal office.

Hyunwoo: 네, 오늘 이 사진도 보니까 굉장히 노멀한 오피스인 것 같아요.

Keith: 되게 평범하죠.

Hyunwoo: 네, not very clean, not very dirty, 되게 평범한 것 같아요.

Keith: Yeah. Well, if you folks work in an office, then, this is a great lesson for you because every day you are going to be going to the office and you can practice your Korean by just looking at whatever you got in your office and repeating the words to yourself. It’s an easy way to improve your Korean.

Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 이 사진안에 있는 물건들은 여러분 사무실에도 분명히 다 있겠죠?

Keith: Yeah. I think almost every office has everything in here.

Hyunwoo: 네. 아, 그런데 한국어로 오피스가 뭔지 제가 방금 말했는데 들으셨어요?

Keith: 사무실.

Hyunwoo: 네. 사무실.

Keith: Can we break down that word?

Hyunwoo: 사-무-실. 사무실.

Keith: So we are going to jump right into the vocabulary. And as we are trying to keep this video not too long and not too complicated, we are going to give you a simple explanation of all the words that we have over here but if you are looking for extra vocabulary words and extra phrases that go along with the words that we are talking about today, remember to stop by koreanclass101.com and pick up that PDF. There, we are going to have a number of examples with each word but for now, let’s keep it simple. How about we start in the middle? What’s the first word?

Hyunwoo: 아, 사무실 가운데에는 책상이 있네요.

Keith: Desk. Can we break that down?

Hyunwoo: 책-상. 책상. 그런데 별로 더럽지 않은 깨끗한 책상이에요.

Keith: Yeah. It looks pretty clean. If you look at my office and my desk, it’s not a pretty sight.

Hyunwoo: 하하. 책상, 맨날 맨날 안 치우세요?

Keith: Yeah. I mean even today, I just spilled tea all over my desk. Just missed my computer, just by a little bit. Got lucky.

Hyunwoo: 아, 아깝다. 그런데, 이 책상 위에는 책이 별로 없어요.

Keith: Yeah. So we can break down that word actually. What’s the first half of the word?

Hyunwoo: 책

Keith: Book

Hyunwoo: 그리고 상.

Keith: Table. So this is actually a book table but we just use it as desk.

Hyunwoo: 네. 책상 위에는 원래 책이 있어야 되는데 이 책상 위에는 컴퓨터, 뭐 공책, 그리고 모니터, 키보드 이런 것 밖에 없어요.

Keith: 그럼 현우씨의 책상은.. Do you have books on your desk?

Hyunwoo: Of course. 당연하죠.

Keith: Study, study, study.

Hyunwoo: 네.

Keith: Well, as we are talking about, we had 책, book and 상. 다른 상도 있죠?

Hyunwoo: 네. 많이 쓰는 상은 ‘밥상’ 이라고 하죠.

Keith: Dining table.

Hyunwoo: 네. 밥 먹을때.

Keith: So there we go. We got two tables. 책상, 밥상.

Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.

Keith: All right. Let’s move on to our next word. What’s right next to it?

Hyunwoo: 어, 어디요?

Keith: Right underneath it?

Hyunwoo: Underneath it?

Keith: 밑에?

Hyunwoo: 밑에는 의자가 있네요.

Keith: Chair.

Hyunwoo: 의-자. 의자.

Keith: Now, what do you call a rolling chair?

Hyunwoo: 음...바퀴달린 의자.

Keith: Wheeled chair.

Hyunwoo: 네. 바퀴가 달린 의자.

Keith: Okay. Every office I think has wheeled chairs. If you don’t, I feel bad for you. You’re just stuck in one place. I like to fidget around in my office.

Hyunwoo: 저도요.

Keith: All right. So you know, it would be really nice if you had a couch as your chair.

Hyunwoo: 와, 정말 편하겠어요.

Keith: What’s a couch in Korean?

Hyunwoo: 소파.

Keith: Sofa

Hyunwoo: 네, 그냥 소파라고 하고 소파에는 보통 방석이 많이 있죠.

Keith: That’s right. What is that again?

Hyunwoo: 방석.

Keith: Cushion.

Hyunwoo: 방-석. 그런데 쿠션이라고도 하기도 해요. 그런데 한국 사람들은 쿠션이라고 하면 필로우, 같은 커다란 쿠션을 말하고, 방석이라고 하면 의자위에 놓는 얇은 쿠션을 말해요.

Keith: I think that actually goes back into Korean history where Koreans used to sit on the floor all the time, every time.

Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 의자는 생각할 수도 없었죠.

Keith: Yeah. There is no such thing as a chair.

Hyunwoo: Except for the kings.

Keith: Um that’s right.

Hyunwoo: 네.

Keith: So 방석 was used to be on the floor and now we put it up on chairs and actually I don’t know about yourself but my mom, she makes her own 방석.

Hyunwoo: Ah really, 진짜요?

Keith: 원래 한국사람들 많이 그렇지 않아요?

Hyunwoo: 네 만들 수 있는 사람들도 있어요. 저희 엄마는 이불을 만드세요.

Keith: Yeah exactly. So a lot of Korean people just make their own cushions but 별로 안 좋아요. it’s so like girly like flowers and -

Hyunwoo: 아..시간도 많이 걸리고.

Keith: No, no I mean I don’t actually really like when my mom makes it.

Hyunwoo: 아..

Keith: Because it’s so girly and flowers and unicorns. No unicorns. All right, so let’s move on. What’s our next word?

Hyunwoo: 컴퓨터.

Keith: Computer.

Hyunwoo: 네. 컴-퓨-터. 컴퓨터.

Keith: Now, obviously this is the Koreanized version of the English word, computer.

Hyunwoo: 네. 한국에서 ‘컴퓨럴’라고 하면 사람들이 웃을 거예요.

Keith: 컴퓨터.

Hyunwoo: 컴퓨터.

Keith: Yeah computer doesn’t work.

Hyunwoo: Yeah 피씨라고 해도 잘 못 알아들어요. 컴퓨터라고 해야돼요.

Keith: 근데 한국에는 피씨방 많잖아요.

Hyunwoo: 네, 많이 있죠.

Keith: And for those of you that don’t know 피씨방 is a kind of an internet café.

Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 컴퓨터 쓸 수 있는 곳.

Keith: Yeah. Like an internet café without the café.

Hyunwoo: Yeah. Vending machine은 있죠.

Keith: Yeah, yeah. So a lot of people go there to play games or do other things recently.

Hyunwoo: 네, 그래서 피씨방이라고 할때는 괜찮은데, 평소에는 컴퓨터라고 해요. 키스, 그런데 이 컴퓨터 모니터 옆에 컴퓨터 본체가 있는데 본체를 영어로 뭐라고 해요?

Keith: Well, I think it’s a computer tower.

Hyunwoo: Tower. 만약에 본체가 누워있으면?

Keith: Ah a computer tower on its side. I don’t know. Well, it’s the actual body of the computer.

Hyunwoo: 네. 본체. 본-체.

Keith: I actually don’t have a desktop computer and here 컴퓨터 is referring to desktop computers. What are laptop computers?

Hyunwoo: 노트북.

Keith: Notebook.

Hyunwoo: 네, 노트북이라고 하면 원래 notebook은 공책이죠. 그런데 노트북이라고 한국어로 말하면 랩톱 컴퓨터가 되는거에요.

Keith: The Korean is 노트북 컴퓨터 and why don’t we move on to the English notebook.

Hyunwoo: 공책.

Keith: Can we break down that word?

Hyunwoo: 공-책. 공책. 여기 책상 위에 공책이 한 권 있네요.

Keith: 한-권.

Hyunwoo: 한-권.

Keith: That’s a counter for books.

Hyunwoo: 네, 공책 한 개 해도 되는데 한 권이 더 정확해요.

Keith: So we have one book over here but -

Hyunwoo: Book?

Keith: Well, yeah. Actually we can break it down into book. What is it?

Hyunwoo: 공책.

Keith: That last part 책.

Hyunwoo: 맞아요. 공 means empty 그래서 an empty book 공책.

Keith: So we have 책상, table for books and now, we also have 공책, an empty book.

Hyunwoo: 네. 공책에는 메모를 할 수 있죠.

Keith: But when we are referring to nouns and books, actually I think 공책 is the only one that has 책 in it, right?

Hyunwoo: 그런 것 같아요. 별로 없어요. 음, 교과서, 사전, 잡지, 다 다른 이름이에요.

Keith: Yeah. So you guys got lucky with this one. 공책, 책상.

Hyunwoo: 그런데 공책 위에 연필이 한 자루 있는데요? 연-필.

Keith: Pencil.

Hyunwoo: 네. 연필. 키스는 연필을 많이 쓰세요, 볼펜을 많이 쓰세요?

Keith: Wait! What was that word?

Hyunwoo: 볼펜.

Keith: Pen.

Hyunwoo: 볼-펜.

Keith: I think that’s actually ballpoint pen.

Hyunwoo: 네, 근데 한국어에서는 그냥 볼펜이라고 해요. 펜이라는 말은 잘 안 써요.

Keith: It’s a little strange right?

Hyunwoo: 네. Maybe because we have another word for pen.

Keith: It’s fan.

Hyunwoo: It’s fan. 그래서 팬이라고 하면 I am a fan of somebody 이렇게 말하는거죠. 키스는 연필을 많이 쓰세요, 펜을 많이 쓰세요?

Keith: 둘 다 다써요. I use both.

Hyunwoo: 아 진짜요? 전 항상 볼펜만 써요.

Keith: Really?

Hyunwoo: 네.

Keith: What if you are doing a crossword puzzle?

Hyunwoo: 아, 십자말풀이요? 십자말풀이는 잘 안해요.

Keith: Because you have to use pencils.

Hyunwoo: 아니요. 어려워서. So difficult for me.

Keith: All right. Enough about the working and the studying. Let’s move on to my favorite part. The window.

Hyunwoo: The window.

Keith: Because I like to stare out of the window and pretend I am working. So what’s window?

Hyunwoo: 창문. 창-문. 창문.

Keith: And here we also have some 한자(hanja) words included in this word as well.

Hyunwoo: 창.

Keith: Window.

Hyunwoo: 문.

Keith: These two together means window.

Hyunwoo: 그런데 보통 창문은 유리창이죠.

Keith: Yeah, it’s pretty much always glass.

Hyunwoo: 네. 유리창.

Keith: Glass window.

Hyunwoo: 네. 그런데 이 사무실에는 이 창문 앞에 화분이 많네요.

Keith: A lot of flowers?

Hyunwoo: 네 화분. 화-분.

Keith: I thought flower was 꽃.

Hyunwoo: 네 맞아요. 꽃 맞는데 ’화’가 ‘꽃’이라는 뜻이에요.

Keith: So that 화 that we have here is the same thing as 꽃, flower.

Hyunwoo: 네. 그래서 화분이라고 하면 꽃을 담는 곳, 꽃이 살고 있는 바구니 같은 것을 말하죠.

Keith: Like flowerpots.

Hyunwoo: 네 화분. 저희집에 화분이 정말 많아요.

Keith: Really? Is your mom a nature lover, or your father a nature lover?

Hyunwoo: My father. 저희 아버지가 화분을 키우는 것을 정말 좋아하세요. 아침마다 출근하기 전에 화분에 물을 주세요.

Keith: Why does he like plants so much?

Hyunwoo: 음, 모르겠어요.

Keith: The plants treat him better than his children do.

Hyunwoo: Oh that’s not true. 절대 절대 아니에요.

Keith: Okay. So here we have flowerpots.

Hyunwoo: 화분.

Keith: Okay. Let’s move on to what’s right next to that. What’s our next word?

Hyunwoo: 냉장고.

Keith: Refrigerator.

Hyunwoo: 냉-장-고. 냉장고.

Keith: Now here we have refrigerator. What’s right on top of the refrigerator?

Hyunwoo: 아, 냉동실?

Keith: Freezer

Hyunwoo: 네, 냉장고의 윗 부분을 냉동실, 그리고 아랫부분을 냉장실이라고 해요.

Keith: All right. And the whole thing is 냉장고.

Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 냉장고.

Keith: When you say 고 I say 거

Hyunwoo: 왜요?

Keith: Because it’s easier to say.

Hyunwoo: 음, 냉장거. 냉장거.

Keith: Because 냉장고 you kind of have to stop and go 고

Hyunwoo: From 앙 to 고

Keith: Yeah.

Hyunwoo: 냉장고. 냉장고. 냉장거. 음 냉장거가 더 쉬운데 절대로 냉장거라고 쓰면 안돼요 You shouldn’t write 냉장거.

Keith: Yeah but I think colloquially speaking, if you want to say 냉장거 it’s not a problem, right?

Hyunwoo: 음, 문제될 것 없어요.

Keith: Yeah. I think you know, almost everybody understands.

Hyunwoo: 네, 괜찮아요. 그냥 냉장거해도 되요.

Keith: 뭐요 What was that? What was that?

Hyunwoo: 냉장거

Keith: There you go! Well, the 냉장거 in my office stinks.

Hyunwoo: 진짜요?

Keith: Yeah because someone left some kimchi in there and has not taken it out in months.

Hyunwoo: Who’s that?

Keith: I don’t know but it is disgusting.

Hyunwoo: 김치가 냄새가 좀 강하죠?

Keith: Yeah. After a couple of months, yes. All right. So I think we are done.

Hyunwoo: Well 오늘 진짜 많은 단어를 배웠네요.
