Yunseol: 안녕하세요, 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here. Picture video vocab, lesson #10. The Street 2. All right. So, we had one of our previous lessons focusing on the street. Now, we have another lesson focusing on a different street. So, as we are doing a lesson on the street, what is street in Korean?
Yunseol: 길(gil).
Keith: And also there is another word that’s kind of similar.
Yunseol: Which is 도로(doro).
Keith: And that one is road but here we are focusing on?
Yunseol: 도로(doro).
Keith: The road because there’s a lot of cars. There are some buses and there’s also a 택배.. There is the delivery service going on. So before we move on to the lesson, why don’t we review a little bit.
Yunseol: 복습을 조금 할까요(Bokseubeul jogeum halkkayo)?
Keith: All right. So let’s start with the easy ones. What’s the first one?
Yunseol: 버스(beoseu).
Keith: Bus.
Yunseol: 버-스(beo-seu). 버스(beoseu).
Keith: Okay. Pretty simple. Also another simple word is,
Yunseol: 택시(taeksi).
Keith: Taxi.
Yunseol: 택-시(taek-si). 택시(taeksi).
Keith: All right. Let’s move on to vocabulary that’s a little more difficult. So, not so difficult. What’s car in Korean?
Yunseol: 자동차(jadongcha). 자-동-차(ja-dong-cha). 자동차(jadongcha).
Keith: All right. And now, this one is getting a little tricky. What’s trees lining the street?
Yunseol: It’s 가로수(garosu). 가-로-수(ga-ro-su). 가로수(garosu).
Keith: And actually I don’t think we have a word for that in English but in Korean, that’s referring to,
Yunseol: The street tree.
Keith: Yeah, trees on the street. All right. So finally, what are we taking a look at? We are taking a look up.
Yunseol: 하늘(haneul).
Keith: The sky.
Yunseol: 하-늘(ha-neul).. 하늘(haneul)..
Keith: All right. So we reviewed a little bit and now, let’s get into the lesson. So, where are we?
Yunseol: We are now at 종로(jongno).
Keith: Yeah. Let’s go into 종로(jongno) a little bit. Actually first, let’s go over the pronunciation.
Yunseol: It’s 종-로(jong-no). 종로(jongno).
Keith: And that’s because when the ‘ㅇ(ieung)’ of 종(jong) combines with
Yunseol: ‘ㄹ(rieul)’ of 로(ro)
Keith: ‘ㄹ(rieul)’ becomes
Yunseol: ‘ㄴ(nieun)’
Keith: And once again, the pronunciation is,
Yunseol: 종로[종노](jongno)
Keith: So 종로(jongno) used to be a hangout spot maybe about 30, 40 years ago. It’s still pretty popular.
Yunseol: Um yeah.
Keith: But I think now, you know, there’s other places but 종로(jongno) used to be the place to be.
Yunseol: The center of Seoul.
Keith: Maybe yeah. Something like that but my dad, he used to hang out in 종로(jongno).
Yunseol: Mmmm.
Keith: You don’t know where your parents hang out?
Yunseol: No.
Keith: My dad is cooler than your dad.
Yunseol: Yeah. Pretty sure of that.
Keith: All right. So here--종로(jongno)--it’s kind of old but it has a nice feel to it. So what’s around, what’s famous?
Yunseol: I can see a 극장(geukjang). 서울극장이 보여요(seoulgeukjangi boyeoyo).
Keith: Yeah. This is Seoul theatre. It’s a very old cinema about 20 years old, not really fancy but a lot of people still love this place.
Yunseol: Yeah.
Keith: So what’s that word?
Yunseol: 극장(geukjang).
Keith: Theatre.
Yunseol: 극-장(geuk-jang). 극장(geukjang). 오래된 극장이라서 간판이 화려하지는 않아요.
Keith: Yeah. Since this theatre is actually pretty old, the neon lights, the signs, they are not very bright. So what’s that word sign?
Yunseol: 간-판(gan-pan). 간판(ganpan).
Keith: Yeah and I see a lot of 간판(ganpan) over here.
Yunseol: Over there?
Keith: Yeah and there is one over here too. Actually in Korea, if you go to downtown area, at night, it’s like boom! Colors. My god, my eyes hurt because there’s a lot of 간판(ganpan). 화려한(hwaryeohan)..
Yunseol: 간판(ganpan).
Keith: Yeah.
Yunseol: And the color is all different and ah, and it’s too loud sometimes.
Keith: Yeah. Actually the lights are loud. It’s like ow!
Yunseol: Oh my eyes are suffering from the light!
Keith: And I think Korea is slowly changing away from that but there are still a lot of places where the lights are so bright and it’s kind of too much sometimes.
Yunseol: Yeah.
Keith: All right. So let’s move on. What do you see over here?
Yunseol: 자동차들이 빨간 불이라서 멈춰 있어요.
Keith: Because it’s a red light, all the cars are stopping. So what’s that word, red light?
Yunseol: 빨간 불(ppalgan bul). 빨-간-불(ppal-gan-bul).
Keith: And the first part of that word means red and what’s that second part?
Yunseol: 불(bul).
Keith: That means light.
Yunseol: 불-(bul-). 불(bul).
Keith: It also means fire too.
Yunseol: Yeah. 불 조심하세요.
Keith: Yeah. Be careful of fires. All right, so what do you call a light, a traffic light?
Yunseol: 신호(sinho). 신-호(sin-ho). 신호(sinho).
Keith: And traffic lights in Korea are I think pretty much similar anywhere else you go.
Yunseol: Sure.
Keith: You got three.
Yunseol: The red, yellow and green.
Keith: Actually do some people call it a blue light?
Yunseol: Yeah. 저도요, 파란 불(paran bul)이라고 해요.
Keith: Yeah. That’s blue.
Yunseol: Um not green definitely.
Keith: So what’s green in Korean?
Yunseol: 초록색(choroksaek).
Keith: Yeah but for some reason, you don’t say green light, you say blue light.
Yunseol: 파란 불(paran bul).
Keith: Yeah. It doesn’t work for me but it’s something that you have to say in Korea and speaking of colors, I see more 빨간색(ppalgansaek) red color over here.
Yunseol: That’s the delivery service car. 택배(taekbae).
Keith: Yeah door-to-door delivery service.
Yunseol: 택-배(taek-bae). 택배(taekbae).
Keith: And actually that word has some 한자(hanja) in it and I like 한자(hanja). So let’s go over some of it.
Yunseol: 택(taek).
Keith: That means house as in?
Yunseol: 주택(jutaek).
Keith: And what’s the second part of the word?
Yunseol: 배(bae).
Keith: Delivery as in?
Yunseol: 배달(baedal).
Keith: One of my favorite things, delivery service.
Yunseol: You like just delivery pizza right?
Keith: Yeah I mean you know just sitting back at home, relaxed. I am hungry.
Yunseol: It’s just so you.
Keith: It’s okay.
Yunseol: Okay.
Keith: All right. So that’s going to do it for this lesson. Remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and there, we have a review track, a review audio track. There, we have time gaps of all our vocabulary words. So you can practice and repeat to perfect your pronunciation. Okay. So that’s going to do it. Bye bye!
Yunseol: Bye!
