POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Joshua: 오… 팀과 철수 너무 불쌍해요. Poor Tim and 철수. They had to be taken to the hospital because they passed out from exhaustion, right?
Tim: 맞아요. 게다가 엉덩이 주사까지 맞아요. They also have to get shots on their butt.
Joshua: 아, 형. Speaking of hospitals, why don’t we give the listeners some useful vocabulary that can be used when being taken to the hospital.
Tim: 아, 좋은 생각입니다. 그럼 하나씩 볼까요? Then let’s do it one by one. 한국말로는 형인 제가 하고 영어로는 동생인 조슈아가 하겠습니다. Okay, Joshua?

Joshua: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Joshua: The first word is
Tim: 탈진. Exhaustion or fatigue.
Joshua: Yes. 탈진 is a noun meaning exhaustion or fatigue. 근데, 형, 질문이요.
Tim: 조슈아, 왜 그렇게 질문이 많아요? 뭐예요?
Joshua: How can we make it into a verb to be exhausted?
Tim: 아… 그거요? It’s very simple. Just add 하다 to do to 탈진 so it becomes 탈진하다 to be exhausted.
Joshua: So 탈진 is a noun and 탈진하다 is the corresponding verb.
Tim: 응.
Joshua: 근데, 형.
Tim: 아 왜 자꾸 불러요? 왜요?
Joshua: Now let’s make an example sentence using 탈진 exhaustions.
Tim: 좋아요. What about this? 팀은 무리한 핫요가를 하다가 탈진했어.
Joshua: Which means Tim was exhausted from overexerting himself during a hot yoga class. Is that true?
Tim: 예, 사실입니다. 그래서 제가 핫요가를 싫어하는 거예요.
Joshua: Okay. Our next phrase is
Tim: 주사를 맞다 to get a shot. Let’s break down. 주사 is a noun that means a shot or an injection.
Joshua: 맞다 is a verb that means to be hit or to be struck.
Tim: Yes. So altogether, 주사를 맞다 means to get a shot.
Joshua: 형, can you give us an example sentence?
Tim: 물론이죠, 동생. Okay what about this? 조슈아는 심한 탈진으로 엉덩이에 주사를 맞아야 해.
Joshua: Which means Joshua has to get a shot on his back side from extreme exhaustion. What! On my back side, no way.
Tim: That’s right.
Joshua: Ouch! Okay and what’s our last phrase?
Tim: 어디 어디에 힘을 빼다. To relax one’s body. Let’s break the phrase down. 힘 is a noun that means strength or force.
Joshua: 빼다 is a verb that means to pull out or remove.
Tim: Yes. So altogether 힘을 빼다 means to relax one’s body.
Joshua: 그럼 형.
Tim: 아 또 뭐예요.
Joshua: Then how do you say relax your arms in Korean?
Tim: 아… 그거요? 팔에 힘을 빼세요. Relax your arms.
Joshua: Aha then what about relax the muscles in your backside.
Tim: 아… 엉덩이에 힘 빼세요. Relax the muscles in your back side.
Joshua: Thank you, 형. 그럼 형, 엉덩이에 힘 빼세요.
Tim: 하하하. 뭐라고요? Okay now let’s move on to the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Joshua: The focus of today’s lesson is on a speech ending that is used when questioning a fact that is known to someone.
Tim: 네. 한국어로 ‘뭐뭐나요’입니다.
Joshua: Can you tell us about the conjugation rule?
Tim: 예, 알겠습니다. Rule #1. Use verb stem plus 나 when you are talking to someone younger than you.
Joshua: Rule #2. Use verb stem plus 나요 when you are speaking to someone older than you. 형, examples please.
Tim: 알았어요. Let’s use the verb 괜찮아지다 to be all right. 괜찮아지 is the verb stem. Then we add 나요 so it becomes 괜찮아지나요 meaning will so and so be all right. One example sentence. 의사 선생님, 주사를 맞으면 괜찮아 지나요?
Joshua: Which means doc, will so and so get better after getting a shot? Good one. Okay what about the next verb? To get a shot which we just learned from today’s key vocab.
Tim: 아… 그러요? 주사를 맞다 means to get a shot. 주사를 맞 is the verb stem. Then we add 나요 so it becomes 주사를 맞나요 meaning will so and so get a shot. Here is an example sentence. 의사 선생님, 조슈아도 주사를 맞나요?
Joshua: Which means will Joshua also get a shot? No thanks. Okay. What about this time? We will try one with the verb to hurt or to be painful.
Tim: 아… 아프다 means to hurt or to be painful. 아프 is the verb stem. Then we add 나요 so it becomes 아프나요 meaning does it hurt as an example sentence. What about 조슈아, 엉덩이가 아프냐?
Joshua: Which means Joshua, does your butt hurt? By the way listeners, Tim says 아프냐 instead of 아프나요 because we are good friends but anyway 형, 엉덩이 안 아파요. No, my butt doesn’t hurt. Okay our last verb is to prepare or to get ready.
Tim: 준비하다 means to prepare or to get ready. 준비하 is the verb stem. Then we add 나요 so it becomes 준비하나요 meaning are you getting ready. 조슈아, 지금 집에 갈 준비하나요?
Joshua: Which means Joshua, are you getting ready to go home? Yes, you are right. It’s Friday and it’s been a long week. So I am definitely getting ready to go home.
Tim: 어? 아직 녹음 안 끝났는데. But we haven’t finished the recording yet.
Joshua: Well, I think we gave our listeners plenty to think about for today’s lesson. So let’s call it a day.

Outro

Joshua: 형, I will let you say the last word for our listeners.
Tim: 어? 뭐라고? 마지막 말은? The last word? 음...뭐라 말해야 되지? 음… 자, 오늘 이만 끝!
Joshua: 형, 창피해요. It’s a shame. Ha ha! Okay listeners, thank you for listening and that’s all for today’s lesson. 그리고 형, from now on, you’ll never get a chance to say the last word for our listeners.
Tim: 하하하.
Tim: 여러분, 즐겁게 한국어 공부했나요?
Joshua: 여러분, 다음 시간에도 만나요. Bye everyone.
Tim: Bye, everyone.
