Jaehwi: Hi everyone. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Let’s see what we have for this week. This week’s theme is oh! The Solar System.
Okay the first one is 지구 (jigu) which means “Earth.” Oh 지 (ji) meaning “land” and 구 (gu) means like “ball.” So it means ball of land, ball with the land. So yeah, with that word, you can make a simple sentence saying 우리는 지구에 살고 있습니다. (Urineun jigue salgo itsseumnida.) which means “We live on the Earth.”
금성 (geumseong) “Venus.” 금 (geum) means “gold” and 성 (seong) means “star.” Okay with that word, you can say 금성의 옛날 이름은 샛별입니다. (Geumseongui yennal ireumeun saetbyeorimnida.) which means “The old name of 금성 (geumseong) in Korean is 샛별 (saetbyeol). 샛별 (saetbyeol) means “new star.” So you can also find the name in people’s name these days too.
Okay next we have 화성 (hwaseong) which means “Mars.” 화 (hwa) means “fire” and 성 (seong) means “planet.” So it really means the planet of fire. With that word, you can say 나사는 화성에 로봇을 보냈습니다. (Nasaneun hwaseonge roboseul bonaetsseumnida.) which means “NASA sent a robot to Mars.”
토성 (toseong) which means “the planet of soil.” In English, that’s Saturn. Okay with that word, you can say 토성에는 고리가 있습니다. (Toseongeneun goriga itsseumnida.) which means “Saturn has a ring.”
Next up, okay 천왕성 (cheonwangseong) which means “Uranus.” 천왕성은 지구에서 정말 멀리 있습니다. (Cheonwangseongeun jigueseo jeongmal meolli itsseumnida.) which means “Uranus is really far, far, far away from the Earth.”
Okay that’s all for this week. I will see you next time. 다음 시간에 만나요. (Daeum sigane mannayo.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
