INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Hyunwoo: 안녕하세요. 선현우입니다.
Keith: Hey, Keith here. TOEIC. Now, what’s the TOEIC? 토익이 뭐예요?
Hyunwoo: TOEIC means Test of English for International Communication.
Seol: Ah!
Hyunwoo: It’s the most popular and unpopular English exam in Korea.
Seol: 그러니까 사람들이 많이 보긴 하지만 다들 싫어하는 시험이라는 얘기죠?
Hyunwoo: Everybody hates it.
Seol: 저도 사실 한 번 본 적 있어요.
Keith: 본 적이 있어요?
Seol: 네
Keith: Was it difficult?
Seol: 어려운데요 재미있어요.
Hyunwoo: Really?
Seol: 네
Hyunwoo: I think it’s boring.
Seol: Why? What makes you think like that?
Hyunwoo: Because a lot of people have to take it for their job searching and sometimes in order to graduate from universities because schools require a certain score over like 800 points.
Seol: But I guess you got a perfect score.
Hyunwoo: Something.…
Seol: Like that yeah..
Hyunwoo: Something like that.
Seol: Sure…
Hyunwoo: Fortunately but in my opinion, it’s a boring test. It doesn’t really test how well you speak English.
Seol: 그렇지만 오늘 지혜는 이 시험 봐야 되는걸요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 아마 지혜도 she has to take it. 아마 보고 싶어서가 아니라 봐야 되기 때문에 보는 걸 거예요.
Keith: And what’s that verb for to take a test.
Seol: 시험을 보다
Keith: Literally that’s to see or to watch, to look.
Seol: 그러니까 봐야지만 풀 수 있잖아요. After you see the problem, you can solve it.
Keith: Why? So 시험보다 can literally mean just look at the piece of paper.
Seol: 그럼요.
Keith: Not necessarily take the test.
Seol: 시험은 잘 보고 점수는 나쁘게 받는 경우도 있어요.
Keith: Okay so what’s going on in today’s conversation 오늘의 대화는 무슨 내용이에요?
Hyunwoo: 설씨가 말한 것 처럼 지혜가 토익 시험을 보러가야 해요. 그런데 토익 시험은 아침 8시 반에 시작해요. 9시쯤에 시작하는데 you have to be there by 8:30. 그래서 8시 반까지 가려면 아침 일찍 집을 나가야 되겠죠. 그래서 서둘러서 준비하고 있는 모습이에요.
Keith: Okay so let’s watch her. She is running out the door.
DIALOGUE
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더
(1)지혜: 엄마 다녀오겠습니다.
Keith: Mom, see you later!
(2)엄마: 지혜야! 밥 먹고 가야지!
Keith: Jihye! You should eat before you go!
(3)지혜: 아니에요. 늦었어요!
Keith: No, I'm running late.
(4)엄마: 우유라도 마시고 가!
Keith: At least have some milk before you go!
(5)지혜: 됐어요! 갔다 올게요!
Keith: No thanks. See you!
(6)엄마: 그래 잘 갔다 와! 아! 잠, 잠깐, 잠깐!
Keith: OK. See you. Oh, wait, wait, wait!!
(7)지혜: 왜요! 저 늦었어요!
Keith: What? I'm running late!
(8)엄마: 오늘 일요일인데 어딜 그렇게 가?
Keith: Today's Sunday. Where are you going in such a hurry?
(9)지혜: 엄마! 어제 말했잖아요. 오늘 토익 시험 보러 간다고!
Keith: Mom, I told you yesterday. I'm taking the TOEIC today!
(10)엄마: 아! 어.... 그랬지. 깜빡했다. 그래 어서 갔다 와!
Keith: Oh… yea you did. It slipped my mind. Hurry up!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: Does it bring back a lot of memories?
Hyunwoo: It does.
Seol: 저는 이거 한 번밖에 안 봐서 잘 기억 안 나는데.
Hyunwoo: 예, 저도 이거 두 번밖에 안 봐서 잘 모르겠는데 다른 시험들 볼 때 항상 이렇잖아요.
Keith: 예, 시험볼 때 It’s always like this right?
Seol: Umm.
Keith: Mom, I got to go!
Seol: 지금 늦어 늦어. 빨리 가야 해.
Hyunwoo: You are always late.
Seol: 밥 먹을 시간 없어!
Hyunwoo: 시험볼 때만. Especially when you take tests, you are always late for some reason.
Keith: It’s the gods of the test but I actually saw the TOEIC and I was helping a friend out to study for the TOEIC but 좀 어려워 보였어요. It looked pretty difficult. Why are you shaking your head?
Seol: Because I took three kinds of English test. TOEIC, TOEFL and TEPS and TOEIC was the easiest one.
Keith: Oh.
Hyunwoo: And that could be a problem too…문제가 될 수도 있어요.
Seol: 너무 쉬워서요?
Hyunwoo: Everybody gets over 900.
Seol: And they cannot speak English that much, that fluently.
Hyunwoo: 네. Full score 만점이 990점이에요. 그런데 if you want to enter a big company, 큰 회사, 삼성, LG, 대우, 현대 이런 곳에 들어가려면 950점, 940점. 옛날에는 940점, 950점 그러면 우와! 진짜 공부 열심히 했다 이랬는데 요즘에는 그런 사람들이 많아요.
Keith: That’s probably because everybody in Korea knows a lot of English vocabulary. You know where this is going right? I forget it. Let’s move on. Let’s move on to the Korean vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: First word we have is
Seol: 다녀오다
Keith: To visit, to go to and come back.
Seol: 다녀오다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 다녀오다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have
Seol: 늦다
Keith: To be late
Seol: 늦다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 늦다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next
Seol: 시험
Keith: Test, exam
Seol: 시험 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 시험 [natural native speed]
Keith: 그 다음에
Seol: 보다
Keith: To take a test.
Seol: 보다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 보다 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next
Seol: 깜빡하다
Keith: To forget, to slip one’s mind.
Seol: 깜빡하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 깜빡하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: 마지막으로는
Seol: 갔다 오다
Keith: To go and come back.
Seol: 갔다 오다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 갔다 오다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: Okay. Now we had two to go and come back 뭐였죠?
Seol: 다녀오다 그리고 갔다 오다.
Keith: 그 차이는 뭐예요? What’s the difference?
Hyunwoo: They are the same thing but 다녀오다가 더 formal 느낌?
Seol: 그러니까 어른들에게는 저 학교 다녀오겠습니다라고 말하고요. 친구들에게는 나 학교 갔다 올게라고 말해요.
Keith: Yeah just like you said, you say this to your parents a lot. You use this in the home a lot.
Hyunwoo: 네, 다녀오겠습니다 정말 많이 쓰죠.
Keith: So what does it mean to go and come back?
Hyunwoo: What do you say in English?
Keith: Mom, I am going.
Seol: You should come
Hyunwoo: Back.
Seol: Right. So we just…
Hyunwoo: That’s right.
Seol: Yeah we just add that we are coming back soon. So mom, I am going and coming back soon 저 다녀오겠습니다.
Hyunwoo: Umm I think that’s why 다녀오겠습니다. 그런데 재미있는 것은 저는 엄마한테 아빠한테 습니다, 입니다 이런 말 안 해요.
Seol: 그럼요?
Hyunwoo: 보통 해요, 예요라고 하는데 다녀오겠습니다만 다녀오겠습니다라고 해요. It’s like a set phrase.
Keith: So if you are living with somebody, if you are married to somebody or if you have parents, you can say this to whoever you are living with. So how did it come out in today’s conversation?
Seol: 지혜가 처음에 엄마, 다녀오겠습니다라고 말을 해요.
Keith: That set phrase, I will go and come back. I will be back quick.
Seol: 그리고 갔다 올게요라는 말도 나오네요.
Keith: Yeah I will go and come back but this time, she is a little less formal about it because…
Hyunwoo: She is in a hurry.
Keith: 늦었으니까.
Hyunwoo: 늦었으니까.
Keith: Yeah. We also have the mom saying go and come back.
Hyunwoo: 그래 어서 갔다 와.
Keith: So what does the mom say?
Hyunwoo: So literally means go and come back after finishing whatever you are doing there but it means have a nice trip, have a nice journey, have a nice test whatever.
Keith: Have fun.
Hyunwoo: 만약에 영화를 보러 가면 친구한테 영화 재미있게 봐도 되지만 잘 갔다 와라고 해도 되죠.
Seol: 그럼요. 학교 잘 갔다 와. 학교에서 공부 열심히 해. 다 같은 뜻이에요.
Hyunwoo: 그리고 여행갈 때도 유럽에 여행을 가는 친구가 있으면 유럽 잘 갔다 와라고 해요.
Keith: Kind of like come back safe.
Hyunwoo: 네.
Keith: Okay let’s move on. Before we went into the dialogue, we were talking about taking a test. 시험을 보다.
Hyunwoo: 보다는 정말로 눈으로 보는 거죠. 그런데 시험을 치르다 take 라는 뜻으로 쓰는데 면접을 볼 때에도 쓸 수 있어요.
Keith: Ah that’s a good one. When you take an interview, when you have an interview.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Keith: And so what is that? Can we break down that phrase?
Hyunwoo: 면접
Keith: Interview.
Hyunwoo: 을
Keith: Object marking particle.
Hyunwoo: 보다
Keith: See. Interview, see but to have an interview.
Hyunwoo: 맞아요. You are not watching two people doing interviews.
Keith: Yeah you are actually participating in the interview.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Or you are being interviewed. Are there any other examples?
Seol: 선을 보다라는 표현도 있는데요. 선은 it’s a kind of blind date. 근데 어르신들 그러니까 가족분들이 이렇게 set it up 해 주신 거예요.
Keith: So your parents meet up with other parents and our kids will be good together. Okay so they set up this blind date for you and…
Seol: And I get very…
Keith: The other person and if you like him, you get married.
Seol: 맞아요. 그러니까 결혼을 생각하고 보는 건 선이고요. 여자 친구 남자 친구 편하게 만나는 건 소개팅 이렇게 생각해도 돼요.
Keith: So 선보다 all right, well let’s move on to the today’s grammar point.

Lesson focus

Keith: 두 개 있죠 오늘?
Hyunwoo: 네, 오늘 굉장히 중요한 grammar points가 두 개 있는데.
Keith: 첫 번째는 뭐예요? What’s the first one?
Hyunwoo: 고 가다, 고 오다
Keith: Actually 가다 and 오다, they are very key verbs in Korean. There is a lot of compound verbs also with 가다 and 오다 compound grammatical structures that involve 가다 오다 like today’s grammar point.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요.
Seol: 얼른 소개해 줘요. 오늘의 grammar points.
Keith: Okay. Just a quick question. How do you pluralize grammar point? 한국말로.
Seol: Grammar point들.
Keith: 들? Grammar point들로 넘어갑시다. What’s our first one?
Hyunwoo: 고 가다, 고 오다.
Keith: And go verb and go or verb and come. Now this is a really simple grammatical structure to use and also very useful because if you want to connect two verbs, all you’ve got to do is use 고. Today we are going to be focusing on verb and go and verb and come. So how was it used in today’s conversation? 오늘의 대화에는 어떻게 나왔어요?
Seol: 밥 먹고 가야지.
Keith: Eat and go. Let’s break that down really quick.
Seol: 밥
Keith: Food.
Seol: 먹
Keith: Eat.
Seol: 고
Keith: Now this is a particle that connects the two verbs
Seol: 가야지
Keith: Should go. So
Seol: 밥 먹고 가야지.
Keith: And to construct it is really easy right?
Hyunwoo: 네, 정말 쉬워요. 동사 원형에 고를 붙이면 되죠.
Keith: All you’ve got to do is add 고 at the end of the verb stem.
Hyunwoo: 네. 그런 다음에 가다 또는 오다를 말하면 되죠.
Keith: And the 가다 and 오다 at the end, you can use that to conjugate to whatever politeness level you want and mood, tense, et cetera, et cetera.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 그래서 그 다음에 엄마가 우유를 마시고 가라고 했죠?
Seol: 네. 우유 마시다, 우유 마시, 우유 마시고 가다.
Hyunwoo: 네. 우유 마셔 그리고 가라고 하면 너무 길잖아요. 그래서 우유 마시고 가. 그러니까 여러분도 KoreanClass101.com을 듣고 웹사이트에 코멘트를 남기고 가세요.
Seol: 아 좋은 표현이네요.
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Ah that was a good example. Any other examples.
Hyunwoo: When I visit my relatives, 친척들 집에 가면 항상 고모, 삼촌 and uncles, they always tell me 자고 가, 밥 먹고 가.
Keith: I really like that phrase actually. What’s that first one?
Hyunwoo: 자고 가세요. 자고 가.
Keith: To sleep and go but just use that as sleepover.
Hyunwoo: 네. Stay here tonight.
Keith: Stay here yeah.
Hyunwoo: 네, 그래서 밥 먹고 가. 그런데 저는 자고 가라고 하면 it’s not easy to just stay there for one night 갑자기. 그런데 밥 먹고 가 그러면 네, 밥 먹고 갈게요 하고 금방 말할 수 있죠.
Keith: Eat and go. All right. We did a couple of examples with 가다 something and go, how about the other one 오다 to come.
Seol: 씻고 와.
Keith: Wash up and come. You hear this a lot at the dinner table right?
Seol: 맞아요. 손 씻고 와.
Keith: Because you are so dirty.
Seol: 죄송해요.
Keith: Just kidding, kidding. Next.
Hyunwoo: 이 닦고 와.
Keith: Brush your teeth and come.
Seol: 손 씻고 와나 이 닦고 와 같은 경우에 사실은 오다라는 말 자체는 별로 필요 없죠. 손 씻어, 이 닦아가 메인인 거죠.
Hyunwoo: 네, 맞아요. 그런데 오다라는 말을 붙여요 항상. And if you are a newly married couple and if you are the one who is cooking at home, you will always be wondering what time your spouse would come home or whether he or she will eat outside or eat at home. 그래서 이렇게 물어볼 수 있죠. 밥 먹고 올 거야?
Keith: Well do you eat and come home?
Hyunwoo: 네
Keith: Okay.
Seol: 그렇지만 주의할 게 하나 있는데요. 조금 전에 우리 갔다 오다란 말 배웠잖아요.
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 근데 갔다 오다 가다 오다는 함께 쓸 경우에는 가고 오다가 아니라 항상 갔다 오다예요.
Keith: Yeah just like we went over in our vocabulary section, 갔다 오다 is not the verb 가고 오다. Here it’s just a set phrase.
Hyunwoo: 갔다 오다.
Keith: Okay let’s move on to our next grammar point.
Hyunwoo: 두 번째 grammar point는 라도.
Keith: At least, even if it’s something, something.
Hyunwoo: 네, 여기서는 엄마가 우유라도 마시고 가라고 했죠.
Keith: At least drink some milk. Even if it’s just milk, drink it.
Hyunwoo: 네. 최소한 우유라도 마셔라.
Keith: At least. So what’s the difference between 라도 and 최소한 or 적어도. All of them mean at least right?
Hyunwoo: 네, 그런데 쓰이는 방법이 틀리죠. 라도는 particle이고 나머지 두 개는 부사예요. Adverbs.
Keith: Okay. They are all the same thing at least but used in different manners. All right, so let’s have a couple of examples.
Hyunwoo: Yeah if you remember from one of our previous lessons, we talked about pick up lines in Korean.
Seol: 시간 있으세요?
Keith: Do you have some time?
Hyunwoo: 네
Seol: 저랑 차라도 한 잔 하실래요?
Keith: Would you at least have some tea with me?
Hyunwoo: 아니면 커피라도
Keith: Or at least some coffee.
Hyunwoo: 아니면 드라이브라도
Keith: Drive?
Seol: I think you went too far.
Keith: At least drive?
Hyunwoo: 아니면 여행이라도...
Seol: That’s why your pick up line does not work.
Keith: Yeah Hyunwoo is not going to be picking up on anybody, anytime soon.
Seol: Ah…
Keith: You have to practice a little more on that.
Seol: Yeah I think so.
Hyunwoo: 연습하고 올게요.
Keith: Oh nice. So at least even if. All right so how do you feel? Let’s finish this up.

Outro

Seol: 저 예전 생각이 나서요. 지혜 시험 잘 봤으면 좋겠다고 생각하고 있었어요.
Keith: Good luck, Jihye. All right. That’s going to do it. Remember to stop by, say hi.
Hyunwoo: Say hi 하고 가세요.
Seol: 네. 코멘트 남기고 갈게요.
Keith: Okay, bye bye.
Seol: 안녕.
Hyunwoo: 수고하셨습니다.
