Key Phrases
Jaehwi: Now, a breakdown of some of the Korean you heard in the scene.
Jaehwi: In the scene, how did Mark ask the taxi driver to take him somewhere?
Mark: 홍대 가주세요.
Jaehwi: 홍대 가주세요. 홍대 가주세요.
Jaehwi: It means "Please go to Hongdae."
Jaehwi: When you want to ask someone to go somewhere, first, say your destination.
Jaehwi: Mark says 홍대, the area in Seoul which is popular for clubbing and shopping. Then says 가주세요 meaning “please go.”
Jaehwi: Simply, your destination, 가주세요.
Jaehwi: You can use this phrase to request someone to go somewhere for you.
Jaehwi: It’s commonly used to give directions when taking taxis.
Jaehwi: If you want to go Seoul station, for example, say 서울역 가주세요. 서울역 is the word for “Seoul Station.”
Jaehwi: Now you try! Say Mark's line.
Mark: 안녕하세요.
Taxi driver: 네 어서오세요.
Mark: 홍대 가주세요.
Jaehwi: How did Mark ask about paying the cab fare?
Mark: 티머니 되나요?
Jaehwi: 티머니 되나요? 티머니 되나요?
Jaehwi: It means "Can I pay by a transportation card?" or literally "Is T-money okay?" 티머니 is the name of the most popular transportation card in Korea.
Jaehwi: Mark wants to pay by 티머니, the transportation card.
Jaehwi: He says 티머니 first, then 되나요, which means “can” or “is it okay?.”
Jaehwi: By simply adding 되나요 to any noun, you can ask something like “Is something okay?”
Jaehwi: If you want to pay with a credit card, you can say 카드 for “credit card” and say 되나요?
Jaehwi: 카드 되나요?
Jaehwi: “Is a credit card okay?”
English Now you try! Say Mark's line.
Mark: 아, 여기서 세워주세요.
Taxi driver: 네.
Mark: 티머니 되나요?

Lesson focus

Jaehwi: Now, the lesson focus. Here's how to take a taxi in Korea.
Jaehwi: There are three types of taxis in Korea.
Jaehwi: Orange taxis are owned by a taxi company, silver taxis are privately owned by the driver, and black taxis are considered luxury vehicles.
Jaehwi: The fare in orange and silver taxis is reasonably priced, but drivers are hesitant to drive into small alleys or roads.
Jaehwi: The fare in black taxis is 1.5 times more expensive than the regular fare because the drivers are good mannered, and will drive anywhere.
Jaehwi: They will provide English-speaking drivers, or access to interpretation services.
Jaehwi: To signal a taxi driver, simply raise your hand and wave it up and down.
Jaehwi: When the taxi arrives, open the door and take your seat. What did Mark say when he took the taxi?
Mark: 안녕하세요.
Jaehwi: In Korea it’s okay to sit next to the driver even if you are riding alone.
Jaehwi: And if you are riding with someone older than you, ask the person to sit in the 상석 or “upper seat.”
Jaehwi: The "upper seat" is located behind the front passenger's seat, and it's considered a more honorable seat.
Jaehwi: To give directions to the driver, say your destination and 가주세요.
Mark: 홍대 가주세요.
Jaehwi: Sometimes the driver may not know the location. In that situation, show them the map on your phone and say 여기인데요.
Jaehwi: It means “It’s here.” Or if you have the address written on a piece of paper, give it to the taxi driver.
Jaehwi: The driver will enter the address into the navigation system to get the route.
Jaehwi: Once you've arrived, how can you say “please stop here?” Listen to what Mark said.
Mark: 아, 여기서 세워주세요
Jaehwi: It means “Please stop here.” When the taxi stops, check the price on the meter and say how you want to process the payment. Mark wanted to pay by 티머니, the transportation card, so he said...
Mark: 티머니 되나요?
Jaehwi: If you already know you can pay by a transportation card, you can say 티머니로 해주세요.
Jaehwi: It means “I will pay with T-money”.
Jaehwi: When you want to pay using cash, say 현금으로 할게요.
Jaehwi: It means “I will pay with cash.”
Jaehwi: Or if you want to pay by a credit card, first ask 카드 되나요 to mean "Is a credit card okay?"
Jaehwi: Note that some private taxis don't accept credit cards. If the driver says "yes," say 카드로 할게요, which means "I will pay with a credit card."
Jaehwi: Tipping is not necessary in Korean taxis, so you will receive all of your change back.
Practice
Jaehwi: Now it's time to practice your new ability.
Jaehwi: You’ve just seated yourself in a taxi. Ready? Here we go.
Jaehwi: You want to go to Gangnam Station or 강남역. What should you say?
Jaehwi: 강남역 가주세요.
Jaehwi: You’ve arrived at your destination. You want to pay with your transportation card or 티머니. What should you say?
Jaehwi: 티머니 되나요?
Taxi Driver: 잠시만요.
Jaehwi: Great job!
Jaehwi: 강남역 가주세요.
Jaehwi: 티머니 되나요?

Outro

Jaehwi: 잘 했어요! Now, watch the scene one more time. After that, you'll be ready to take a taxi in Korea! 안녕히 계세요!
