안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo)
Hello and welcome to Korean survival phrases brought to you by KoreanClass101.com, this course is designed to equip you with the language skills and knowledge to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Korea. You will be surprised at how far a little Korean will go. Now, before we jump in, remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and there, you will find the accompanying PDF and additional info in the post. If you stop by, be sure to leave us the comment.
Today’s phrase is something for all you shoppers out there. Today’s phrase is how much or 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)? In Korean, how much is 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)? Let’s break it down by syllable, 얼-마-예-요 (eol-ma-ye-yo)? Now, let’s hear it again. 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)? Now listen to the intonation. 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)? So it rises, comes down and levels out. 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)? Shopping at the market at an eatery, this is an extremely high frequency phrase. The most rudimentary way of using this phrase is pointing at something while saying this phrase. But let’s try and build this up a bit, shall we? Let’s start with the expression, how much is this which in Korean is 이거 얼마예요 (igeo eolmayeyo)?
Let’s listen a little slowly. 이거 얼마예요 (igeo eolmayeyo)? And now by syllable, 이-거 얼-마-예-요 (i-geo eol-ma-ye-yo)? Let’s take a look at the word for this. This is 이거 (igeo). And now by syllable, 이-거 (i-geo). Now let’s hear it again. 이거 (igeo). When requesting something a bit further away, the expression in Korean is 그거 얼마예요 (geugeo eolmayeyo)? Let’s take a look at the word for that. That is 그거 (geugeo). Let’s break it down by syllable, 그거 (geugeo). Now let’s hear it again, 그거 (geugeo). 그거 얼마예요 (geugeo eolmayeyo)?
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)!
How much - 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo)?
How much is this - 이거 얼마예요 (igeo eolmayeyo)?
How much is that - 그거 얼마예요 (geugeo eolmayeyo)?
All right, that’s going to do it for today. Remember to stop by KoreanClass101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment.

Let's practice "이거 얼마예요?" :)

Hi Hope,

Thanks for posting. The difference is only in the formality--이것은 얼마입니까? is a very formal way of asking the price of something, and 이거 얼마예요? is the informal-formal way of asking someone (polite, but not absolutely polite).

Cheers,

Lyn

Hi

In another lesson about asking how much is this

igeoseun eolmaimnikka is used and in this lesson it is igeo eolmayeyo

My question is can you use either one of these when you are asking about a price or are there certain circumstances where one should be used?

Thank you.

Hi Jasmine,

Thank you for posting. '얼마예요' is the proper way of writing 'how much', but usually when people are speaking quickly, they end up saying the sound as '에요' rather than '예요' as it is easier (flow wise). Hope this was of help.

Best,

Lyn

Why is it pronounced as 에요 not 예요? I was taught in my Korean class that it was pronounced 예요.

 Hi, 샬릇.

예요(yeyo) is the simplified version of 이에요(iyeyo)

When any nouns or verb-stems are finished with batchim(consonant on the bottom) such as 김(gim), you should add the particle '이(i)' right in front of 에요(eyo). and it gets simplified as 예요. (yeyo)

If there is no batchim such as 김치(kimchi), you don't need 이 particle. You can just say 김치에요.(kimchi-eyo)

I hope this would help you. Thank you!

can't you write it as 에요?

I don't really understand this 에요 예요

sometimes my friends tell me it's 에요?

or maybe it's just the pronunciation?

 ???

Hello Mirca,

About your question, 얼마'예'요?

You are right! 얼마'에'요? is the correct one!

However, in speaking, it has almost no difference between two.

Thanks for listening and leaving the comment, Mirca,

cheers,

By the way, hello yukiya,

"what a job you've done!", "because of you, I am able to see and response to Mirca!" "GUDBYE:sad:"

cheers,

Tim

Hi Keith,

How are you?

I have a comment... 얼마'예'요, the way you say it, it sounds like 'e' instead of 'ye' as written. Which one is correct?

Thank you.
