INTRODUCTION
Gina:Hi everyone, I’m Gina.
Eunhee:And I’m Eunhee!
Gina:And welcome to Culture Class: Essential Korean Vocabulary, Lesson 10! In this lesson you'll learn 5 essential words related to Society and Culture. These are five common items of Korean Traditional Clothing. Hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at KoreanClass101.com
FIVE KEY VOCABULARY ITEMS

Eunhee:한복
[pause - 5 sec.]
Gina:‘Hanbok’ is a traditional Korean dress which is beautifully designed with vivid colors, and known for its distinctively wide sleeves and free-flowing skirts. These days, newer designs of the Hanbok mix traditional styles with western fashion, so you may see more people on the streets wearing what looks like a simplified or casual Hanbok.
Gina:Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Eunhee:(normal) 최근 한복은 특별한 날에 입는 옷으로 생각되어 주로 명절에만 입습니다.
Gina:Hanbok is considered special clothing these days, so Koreans only wear them on national holidays.
Eunhee:(slow) 최근 한복은 특별한 날에 입는 옷으로 생각되어 주로 명절에만 입습니다.
Gina:Okay, what’s the next word?

Gina:traditional Korean jacket with multi-colored sleeves
Eunhee:(slow) 색동 저고리 (regular) 색동 저고리

Gina:This is a Korean traditional jacket with multi-colored sleeves. It is mostly worn by brides or by young children, especially young girls, who wear it on their first birthday or on national holidays.
Gina:Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.
Eunhee:(normal) 색동저고리 소매는 원하는 색의 조합으로 선택할 수 있습니다.
Gina:You can choose from a variety of combinations of colors for the sleeves of the ‘Saekdong Jeogori.’
Eunhee:(slow) 색동저고리 소매는 원하는 색의 조합으로 선택할 수 있습니다.
Gina:Okay, what’s the next word?
Eunhee:삿갓
Gina:a bamboo hat
Eunhee:(slow) 삿갓 (regular) 삿갓
Gina:Listeners, please repeat:
Eunhee:삿갓
[pause - 5 sec.]
Gina:In the past, this conical-shaped bamboo hat was commonly worn by Buddhist monks or farmers in order to protect themselves from the rain or the sun. But these days, people hang it on the wall for decoration.
Gina:Now let's hear a sample sentence using this word.

Heeya,

I haven't tried but I remember hearing their mobile version of the website is pretty friendly to navigate, so you might consider just playing it directly from your phone while you do those two things.

I don't think the people who built the environment for this website would have found a check box indicating that a file has been downloaded as intuitive and would quite frankly simply add more clutter, which I think the new design was trying to cut down on. Not to mention the extra coding involved.

An additional option, since you have an ipod, and possibly just subscribing to the koreanclass101 podcast channel and instead of having episodes downloaded automatically, search through their published library for the file you want and simply download it. Whether you're using an ipod touch or a classic, you should still be able to view the PDF notes as well if you are a premium user. If not, then audio.

Thanks, Colin.

I was hoping there was a checkbox or something to mark an audio file that you've downloaded, much like the boxes for lessons done. I like to download on my Ipod and listen to in the car or at the gym but I guess since I listen to them outside of sitting at the computer, I can just mark it as the lesson being done.

Thanks again !

Heeya,

It's probably due to your browser or user-specific windows settings and not due to the script protocols of how the website is designed.

My best piece of advice to you to remedy this situation is to simply not, albeit accidentally, download the same file twice to begin with.

Hello,

I am downloading these audio mp3 files but I notice, when I accidentally try to download the same file, it does not ask me if I want to replace the previous file...is there a way to avoid this? it just seems to download again, even though I downloaded and saved the exact same mp3 file...

Hi Colin,

Please accept my apology for the comment that Geumseon left. I'll make sure that she's going to be more careful with the assumption.

About the pronunciation, we've tried to have the English voice actor follow the pronunciation as much as she could do, however, I believe you might find some pronunciation are not correct. The purpose of adding the English translation was to help you understand the meaning of the Korean sentence and word correctly, but we'll be more careful when recording the future lessons.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to let us know.

Thank you,

Jae

She is pronouncing the romanization, not the Korean, that is what I meant, she can speak in her accent if she is speaking English, but she is speaking Korean in a British accent, and isn't really demonstrating proper pronunciation.

미국바름이랑 무슨 상관이에요? 제가 미국사람 인줄 알았어요? I don't understand this assumption that anything else is by default American and that American English or accent is the standard for everything. I wasn't comparing the accent with an American accent. There should really be a bilingual speaker doing those segments. 뀌가 아퍼졌어요.

This is the third time, as a customer of this website, that facilitators have assumed I am American, I find it highly offensive. There is a world outside of Japan, America, korea, and the two Koreas.

And it is quite big.

Hi Colin,

영국인 발음... 미국발음과 비슷하면서도 다른 발음이죠. : )

American pronunciation and British pronunciation is similar different pronunciation.

Thank you!
