INTRODUCTION
Minkyong: 안녕하세요. 민경이에요.
Keith: Hey Keith here. Beginner Season 2, Save Me From My Mom Part 2.
Minkyong: It just keeps going on.
Keith: Well this mom is on a rampage. It’s a bad horror movie and she is making 현석 do a lot of things.
Minkyong: 불쌍해요 현석.
Keith: What’s our word real quick?
Minkyong: 불쌍하다
Keith: To be pitiful like when you feel sorry for them ah!
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: 불쌍해
Minkyong: 불쌍해
Keith: I feel so sorry for him. He is so pitiful.
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: Because his mother is
Minkyong: Making him do a lot of things.
Keith: Well actually that’s what’s going on in this conversation. So to recap real quickly our last two conversations, 현석 came in late and mom wasn’t so happy.
Minkyong: No.
Keith: So in our last lesson, she wouldn’t let him watch television and now she is bringing the rest on, the rest of the house chores.
Minkyong: Yes.
Keith: So can you explain what’s going on in this conversation?
Minkyong: Yeah just like the last lesson, he wants to watch television but his mom is making him do a lot of things.
Keith: A lot of things, a lot.
Minkyong: Yes.
Keith: And in this particular relationship, the mother and 현석, what kind of politeness level are they using?
Minkyong: Mom is using 반말.
Keith: Intimate politeness level, casual language
Minkyong: But 현석 is using 존댓말.
Keith: Standard politeness level, polite language and before we jump into the dialogue, what’s our grammar point for today?
Minkyong: 동사+고
Keith: Verb and – and this is used to connect verbs in a sequence. So just real quick, I studied and I ate.
Minkyong: 공부하고 밥 먹었어.
Keith: And this 고 is used with all verbs. So remember to listen to it in our dialogue.
Minkyong: 들어 봅시다.
DIALOGUE
현석: 엄마... 저 방 청소했고, 빨래했고, 숙제했고, 공부했어요. 텔레비젼 볼래요.
엄마: 안 돼! 밥 만들고, 엄마 빨래 하고, 아빠 빨래 하고, 내일 아침 밥도 만들어!
현석: 엄마... 저 힘들고, 피곤해요... 텔레비젼 안 볼래요. 잘래요.
엄마: 조현석!!!!!!
현석: 네...
Minkyong: 영어로 한 번 더.
현석: 엄마... 저 방 청소했고, 빨래했고, 숙제했고, 공부했어요. 텔레비젼 볼래요.
Keith: Mom, I cleaned my room, did the laundry, did my homework, and studied. I want to watch television.
엄마: 안 돼! 밥 만들고, 엄마 빨래 하고, 아빠 빨래 하고, 내일 아침 밥도 만들어!
Keith: No. Make dinner, do my laundry, do your father's laundry, and make tomorrow's breakfast.
현석: 엄마... 저 힘들고, 피곤해요... 텔레비젼 안 볼래요. 잘래요.
Keith: Mom, I'm tired and exhausted. I don't want to watch television. I want to sleep.
엄마: 조현석!!!!!!
Keith: Hyunseok Jo!
현석: 네...
Keith: All right.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Keith: She is a real slave driver.
Minkyong: So this never happened to you when you did something wrong when you were young?
Keith: Well I wasn’t the best son. Let me explain. I am not a bad son but Ma, leave me alone. And my mom was really nice. So she is like okay. 할 수 없어. I can’t do anything about it.
Minkyong: Wow! You are lucky.
Keith: Why? Does this conversation remind you of you and your mom?
Minkyong: No I am not a good daughter. So anything my mom says, I say no.
Keith: Okay so this mom though, does it remind you of your mom?
Minkyong: A little bit, yeah.
Keith: She is running a tight household.
Minkyong: Yes.
Keith: All right. Before we move on to our vocabulary, I want to remind our listeners to stop by KoreanClass101.com and check out today’s review track. We have a lot of vocabulary words in this lesson but if you want to reinforce the vocabulary that you learned, we have a review track with time gaps so that you can practice and repeat. So let’s move on to the words that are going to be in the review track.
VOCAB LIST
Keith: What’s our first word?
Minkyong: 방
Keith: Room.
Minkyong: 방 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 방 [natural native speed]
Keith: Next we have.
Minkyong: 청소하다
Keith: To clean.
Minkyong: 청소하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 청소하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: After that we have
Minkyong: 빨래하다
Keith: To do laundry.
Minkyong: 빨래하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 빨래하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: 그 다음에
Minkyong: 숙제하다
Keith: To do homework.
Minkyong: 숙제하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 숙제하다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And after that we have
Minkyong: 만들다
Keith: To make.
Minkyong: 만들다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 만들다 [natural native speed]
Keith: 그 다음에는
Minkyong: 아침밥
Keith: Breakfast.
Minkyong: 아침밥 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 아침밥 [natural native speed]
Keith: And next is
Minkyong: 힘들다
Keith: To be tired, to be energy consuming.
Minkyong: 힘들다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 힘들다 [natural native speed]
Keith: And 마지막으로
Minkyong: 피곤하다
Keith: To be tired.
Minkyong: 피곤하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 피곤하다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Keith: All right most of the words are pretty straightforward but I want to go with the word breakfast.
Minkyong: 아침밥
Keith: Now when I say breakfast, I just say 밥, rice, food, what do you say? What do you use?
Minkyong: Well I use 아침.
Keith: And that means morning.
Minkyong: Yes.
Keith: So what you are literally saying is I ate morning.
Minkyong: Morning.
Keith: But what I say is I ate food just rice, just general food but you can combine them or you can use them separately.
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: So in this conversation, how did it come out?
Minkyong: 아침밥
Keith: And that’s literally morning food. And this is the more correct version.
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: But a lot of people colloquially they just say 아침
Minkyong: Or 밥 yes.
Keith: So I ate morning
Minkyong: It means I ate breakfast.
Keith: What kind of sentences might our listeners hear?
Minkyong: 아침 먹었어?
Keith: Did you eat breakfast? Literally morning but breakfast.
Minkyong: Yes.
Keith: All right. Let’s move on to our next two words. Now we have – in our vocabulary section, we had two to be tireds.
Minkyong: 힘들다, 피곤하다
Keith: And the difference between the two is that the first one
Minkyong: 힘들다
Keith: Literally means energy consuming, it draws on my energy, it draws on my power. I have no power and in that word…
Minkyong: 힘들다
Keith: That first syllable is
Minkyong: 힘
Keith: And this means power and the next part of it is
Minkyong: 들다
Keith: To take, to draw. So literally draw power. I have no power. So it’s literally when you are like physically exhausted or even mentally, mentally drained.
Minkyong: Yeah so I don’t know when you just do a lot of exercise, you say 몸이 너무 힘들어.
Keith: My body is so tired. What about mentally?
Minkyong: 숙제가 너무 많아서 힘들어요.
Keith: Because I have a lot of homework, I am tired but this is literally consumed – energy consumed and even maybe mentally drained.
Minkyong: Yeah.
Keith: And the other to be tired is
Minkyong: 피곤하다
Keith: And this is a general I am just tired.
Minkyong: Yeah so it’s like when you didn’t sleep much you just say 피곤해요.
Keith: Yeah basically when you don’t get so much sleep and you are just tired the next day. Give me some coffee.
Minkyong: 할 말이 없어요.
Keith: All right let’s move on to the grammar.
Minkyong: Yeah I am sorry.

Lesson focus

Keith: What's a grammar point once again?
Minkyong: 동사 + 고
Keith: Verb 고. This is verb "and" verb "and". It's used when you're using verbs in a sequence. It's also used for connecting two clauses together in a sentence, but in this conversation verbs were presented in a sequence. So the mom, she's like, "No, you can't watch TV. Do this, do this, do this, do this, do this." Those are all verbs in a sequence. So what came out of the slave driver's mouth?
Minkyong: 밥 만들고
Keith: Make food.
Minkyong: 엄마 빨래 하고
Keith: Do Mom's laundry.
Minkyong: 아빠 빨래 하고
Keith: Do Dad's laundry.
Minkyong: 내일 아침 밥도 만들어!
Keith: And make tomorrow's breakfast. So she has a long list for him to do. But to break down the construction of this, it's real simple. All you've got to do is take the verb stem and add 고, and then you move on to the next verb or clause.
Minkyong: 네
Keith: So in this specific example, we had 밥 만들고. The verb there is?
Minkyong: 만들다
Keith: The verb stem?
Minkyong: 만들
Keith: And then just add 고.
Minkyong: 만들고
Keith: And we move on. Make food and?
Minkyong: 엄마 빨래 하고
Keith: Do Mom's laundry and...
Minkyong: 아빠 빨래 하고
Keith: Do Dad's laundry and...
Minkyong: 내일 아침 밥도 만들어
Keith: Make tomorrow's breakfast. So that's all that his mom wants him to do. But Hyunseok, what does he say? "I'm tired."
Minkyong: 힘들고 피곤해요.
Keith: I'm tired and tired. "My energy is consumed" tired and tired. So, here it can be used to list a number of verbs, again. So can we have a couple examples?
Minkyong: 먹고 놀고 자는게 제일 편해요.
Keith: Eating, hanging out, and sleeping are the most comfortable. Are the best?
Minkyong: 네 맞아요.
Keith: So, how about yourself? Can we describe ourselves with multiple descriptive verbs? So, 설씨 is not over here. Let's describe her.
Minkyong: 이쁘고 착하고 똑똑해요.
Keith: She's pretty, she's kind, and she's smart.
Minkyong: Yeah. It's like a perfect person.
Keith: Yeah she's-- Example sentences. She's all right. She's all right. All right, so what about 현우씨?. 현우 is not over here, so what's he like?
Minkyong: 멋있고 성격 좋고 운동 잘 해요.
Keith: He's cool, he has a good personality, and he's good at working out. Kind of sounds a little odd.
Keith: Yeah.
Minkyong: Yeah it’s not 현우.
Keith: No he is a good guy. He is a good guy. What about me? You don’t want to compliment me?
Minkyong: 재밌고 웃기고 유머러스해요.
Keith: Those are all like strange words like it can be interpreted different ways.
Minkyong: It’s a compliment.
Keith: Somewhat. Well thank you I guess. Thank you. All right so once again, verbs in the sequence and you can add 고 at the end of the verbs, keep it going, keep it going, keep it going.
Minkyong: 진짜 많이 쓰이고 도움이 많이 되고 쉬워요.

Outro

Keith: And even if you didn’t understand that completely, I hope you caught that고 in there. It’s connecting all those verbs together. All right so that’s going to do it. See you later.
Minkyong: 안녕
