POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Miseon: Aww. It’s so romantic. I want to follow you. Oh I might follow you.
Hyunwoo: Well it could be romantic if the guy wants her to follow him to Germany.
Miseon: That’s true. If he doesn’t want her to come with him, it might be a nightmare, right?
Hyunwoo: Yeah a huge nightmare.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: By the way, a lot of people are going abroad to study these days right?
Miseon: Yeah amazing. You know I even hear that like 3 year, 4 year-old kids…
Hyunwoo: Ah yeah.
Miseon: They are speaking English. Wow!
Hyunwoo: It’s, yeah, sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
Miseon: But I guess it’s not only Korea, right?
Hyunwoo: Definitely not. It’s becoming easier and easier to go and study abroad no matter where you are from.
Miseon: Yeah and of course more and more Korean people study abroad too.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and more and more people are coming to Korea to study here as well and I think it’s a good thing and a lot of our listeners also started studying Korean because of a Korean friend who is studying abroad or working abroad and they met at their job or in their college.
Miseon: 네, 맞습니다. I think studying abroad can be a great opportunity.
Hyunwoo: Well unless you have someone following you.
Miseon: That’s true, that’s true but I really want to follow Hyunwoo whenever you go to Japan.
Hyunwoo: Okay.
Miseon: 같이 가요, 현우씨.
Hyunwoo: 네. 같이 가요. But wherever I go, I am not going to be there for many years. So don’t worry. I will be coming back.
Miseon: Sure.
Hyunwoo: So don’t follow me. Just wait for me here.
Miseon: Okay move on.
Hyunwoo: Wait for me in the studio.
Miseon: All right.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 첫 번째로 볼 단어는?
Miseon: 취직하다
Hyunwoo: To get a job.
Miseon: 취직하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 취직하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: And this word can be broken down
Miseon: 네. 취 means to obtain, to acquire, to gain and 직 means the job or work as in 직업.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so 취직 means obtaining a job, getting a job.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요. Using the second letter in the word 직업 people also say 취업
Hyunwoo: Yeah exactly 취직 and 취업 are the exact same thing. Okay so what is the next word?
Miseon: Next word is 따라가다.
Hyunwoo: To follow.
Miseon: 따라가다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 따라가다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: Well it’s fairly straightforward what this means to follow someone but in Korean the active following can be expressed through two verbs depending on the direction.
Miseon: 네. It can be 따라오다 or 따라가다.
Hyunwoo: One more time
Miseon: 따라오다 or 따라가다
Hyunwoo: Yeah as you might have noticed, there is the word 오다 at the end which means to come
Miseon: And 따라가다 means to go.
Hyunwoo: So altogether if someone is coming towards you to follow you, then you can say 따라오다.
Miseon: 네. And if someone is following someone else going away from where you are, then you can say 따라가다.
Hyunwoo: So what can you say when you get into a taxi and tell the taxi driver, please follow that taxi over there?
Miseon: 저 택시 따라가 주세요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah to follow me right?
Miseon: 네. Actually 현우씨 in there.
Hyunwoo: Okay I got to run away to the grammar point section.
Miseon: Right. I am going to follow you. I will follow you.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What is the grammar point of this lesson?
Miseon: The grammar point of this lesson is how to talk about possibility and to say that you might do something.
Hyunwoo: As in the example
Miseon: 대학원 갈지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might go to graduate school.
Miseon: When you are talking about something that you might do in the future, you can use the structure (으)ㄹ지도 모르다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and this structure literally means it will happen also I don’t know or I don’t know whether it will also happen that blah, blah.
Miseon: 네. Although the literal translation has the word 모르다 in it which means to not know what the sentence really means is, it is out of my knowledge whether it will happen or not.
Hyunwoo: Yeah when it is actually used in a sentence, it means it could happen or there is a possibility that it might happen.
Miseon: 네, 맞습니다. So for example, the verb 만나다 to meet becomes 만나 plus ㄹ지도 모르다. So 만날지도 모르다. 만날지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might need him or her. So how was this structure used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Miseon: 나는 대학원 갈지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might go to graduate school.
Miseon: 그냥 취직할지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might just get a job.
Miseon: 나는 유학갈지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might go study abroad.
Miseon: 어쩌면 4년 있을지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: I might stay there for 4 years.
Miseon: 니가 독일에 가면 나도 따라갈지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: If you go to Germany, I might follow you. So let’s look at some examples. 미선씨, how do you say I might not be able to come tomorrow?
Miseon: 나 내일 못 올지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: And this in Korean actually means I am not going to come tomorrow.
Miseon: That’s true. It’s not a possibility going there right?
Hyunwoo: Right.
Miseon: Yeah it’s more like a negative side.
Hyunwoo: Yeah just to be polite, people say when they can’t make it to some place, instead of saying 못 가요, they say 못 갈지도 몰라요.
Miseon: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: Yeah so to ignore that and how do you say my friends might come.
Miseon: 친구들이 올지도 몰라요.
Hyunwoo: Great and the last one. You might laugh if you hear my story.
Miseon: 내 이야기 들으면 웃을지도 몰라.
Hyunwoo: So I hope everybody got that. This (으)ㄹ지도 모르다 structure.
Miseon: 네.

Outro

Hyunwoo: And that just about does it for today’s lesson.
Miseon: 우리는 다음 시간에 올지도 몰라요.
Hyunwoo: 네. 기다려 보세요.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: We might be there for the next lesson. So before we go, we want to tell you about a way to drastically improve your pronunciation.
Miseon: Yes the voice recording tool in the premium learning center.
Hyunwoo: Record your voice with the click of a button.
Miseon: And then play it back just as easily.
Hyunwoo: So you record your 목소리, your voice and then listen to it.
Miseon: Compare it to the native speakers
Hyunwoo: And adjust your
Miseon: 발음
Hyunwoo: Pronunciation and this will help you improve your pronunciation fast.
Miseon: 네.
Hyunwoo: So everyone, we will see you at KoreanClass101.com.
Miseon: 네. 오늘도 들어주셔서 정말 감사해요, 여러분.
Hyunwoo: 감사합니다. 안녕히 계세요.
Miseon: Bye.
Hyunwoo: Bye.
