DIALOGUE
seung-hyeon: a... isujeong gyosunim jeongmal mi-in-in geot gata.
soyeon: mi-in-iragi bodaneun... gwi-yeopge saenggyeotji.

seung-hyeon: ya. neo jiltuhaneun geo-ya?
soyeon: jilturagi bodaneun... naengjeong-han pandan-iji.
Seunghyeon: Ah...I think Professor Lee Sujeong is such a beauty.
Soyeon: Rather than a beauty, she is cute.
Seunghyeon: Is she? But I think she's really a genius.
Soyeon: Rather than a genius, I think she's a little smart.
Seunghyeon: You do? I think she's really a genius...and I think she's an angel.
Soyeon: I wouldn't say she's an angel...she's just kind of nice.
Seunghyeon: Hey, are you being jealous?
Soyeon: Rather than being jealous, I'm being cool-headed with my judgment.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: 네. I think 소현 was being very, very, very jealous.
Gyeongeun: Maybe but maybe she was just being honest.
Hyunwoo: Maybe that’s true but if a 교수님 a professor is a genius, very beautiful and also kind like an angel, I am sure she will make a lot of girl students jealous.
Gyeongeun: You are right. So 소현 is not admitting any of that entirely.
Hyunwoo: Right. So we are going to learn how she expressed her half agreement and half disagreement in the dialogue through the grammar point of this lesson but for now, let’s look at some vocabulary.
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: All right. Now let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. So the first word we are looking at is
Gyeongeun: 미인
Hyunwoo: A beauty, a beautiful woman just like yourself.
Gyeongeun: Thank you. I like this word.
Hyunwoo: Just when I use it toward you right?
Gyeongeun: Yeah.
Hyunwoo: Like I just said, I think its magical word for men to use the word woman.
Gyeongeun: Yeah maybe but I feel like you are making fun of me.
Hyunwoo: Why do you think that?
Gyeongeun: Because of your nuance.
Hyunwoo: Ah okay I don’t sound serious enough right?
Gyeongeun: Yeah you have to be careful when you use these words.
Hyunwoo: Ah okay. So 경은씨 see if I sound serious enough. 경은씨, 미인이시네요.
Gyeongeun: 감사합니다.
Hyunwoo: I think you look very happy right now and I haven’t met any woman who doesn’t look happy when they hear someone tell them 미인이시네요.
Gyeongeun: Oh well actually I think you are right.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and I think the same goes for guys too if some girl says 미남이시네요 to them, everybody will be happy.
Gyeongeun: Yeah I think so. I will say this to you often from now on 미남이시네요.
Hyunwoo: You know, you don’t sound very serious when you say that either.
Gyeongeun: No I am serious 미남이시네요, 현우씨.
Hyunwoo: Well thank you 경은씨도 미인이세요. What’s the next word?
Gyeongeun: 질투하다
Hyunwoo: To be jealous.
Gyeongeun: 질투하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 질투하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: 질투하다 is to be jealous but it’s a little bit different from to envy actually.
Gyeongeun: 네. To envy is 부러워하다 or 부럽다.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and 질투하다 is when you are full of jealousy. You might do something bad.
Gyeongeun: 네, 맞아요.
Hyunwoo: 네. If you envy someone and if you can say that you are 부러워하고 있다. you are just being jealous but 질투하다 can be a dangerous thing.
Gyeongeun: 네, 나쁜 의미죠?
Hyunwoo: 네. Okay so for now, let’s go on to the grammar point of this lesson.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What is the grammar point of this lesson?
Gyeongeun: The grammar point of this lesson is how to say rather than A or I wouldn’t say A but rather B.
Hyunwoo: As in the example.
Gyeongeun: 예쁘다기보다는 귀여워요.
Hyunwoo: I wouldn’t say she is pretty, but I would rather say she is cute.
Gyeongeun: When you want to say rather than A or I wouldn’t say A but rather B, in Korean, you can use this structure 기보다는 or 이라기보다는
Hyunwoo: 보다 literally has the meaning of then and the structure 기보다는 takes the meaning of rather than saying that or rather than saying that, I would say
Gyeongeun: Yeah you can use this structure when you want to express a little bit of agreement and disagreement at the same time.
Hyunwoo: Yeah and also express your opinion about what something or someone is really like. So how do you form a sentence with this structure?
Gyeongeun: For verbs, you take the plain narrative and add 기보다는 after that.
Hyunwoo: For example
Gyeongeun: 바쁘다 is to be busy. So it becomes 바쁘다기보다는.
Hyunwoo: And it means, rather than being busy or rather than saying you are busy.
Gyeongeun: Yeah and with nouns,
Hyunwoo: You add 이라기보다는 or 라기보다는 after that noun.
Gyeongeun: For example, 학생 is a student and you make it 학생이라기보다는.
Hyunwoo: And that means, I wouldn’t say that he or she is a student but okay now let’s look at how it was used in the dialogue for this lesson.
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요. So 미인이라기보다는... 귀엽게 생겼지.
Hyunwoo: Rather than a beauty, just cute.
Gyeongeun: And 천재라기보다는... 조금 똑똑하지.
Hyunwoo: Rather than a genius, I think she is a little smart.
Gyeongeun: 그리고 천사라기보다는... 조금 친절하지.
Hyunwoo: I wouldn’t say she is an angel but I would say she is just kind of nice.
Gyeongeun: 질투라기보다는... 냉정한 판단이지.
Hyunwoo: Rather than being jealous, I am being coolheaded with my judgment. Okay now before we finish, 경은씨, let’s look at three more examples please.
Gyeongeun: 네, 좋아요.
Hyunwoo: Okay so how do you say, I am not saying it’s wrong, but I think it’s a little different?
Gyeongeun: 틀렸다기보다는 조금 다른 것 같아요.
Hyunwoo: And how do you say, I wouldn’t say it’s strange but it’s unique.
Gyeongeun: 이상하기보다는 특이해요.
Hyunwoo: And lastly, how would you say, rather than surprising, it’s out of expectation.
Gyeongeun: 놀랍다기보다는 의외예요.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Okay great. So that just about does it for today.
Gyeongeun: Ready to test what you just learned.
Hyunwoo: Make this lesson’s vocabulary stick by using lesson specific flash cards in the learning center.
Gyeongeun: There is a reason everyone uses flash cards
Hyunwoo: They work.
Gyeongeun: They really do have memorization.
Hyunwoo: You can get the flash cards for this lesson at
