INTRODUCTION
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다.
Keith: Keith here! It is! No, it isn't! It’s an exciting title, isn’t it?
Seol: Right.
Keith: Yeah, we’re still continuing our series with Tom and Mina. And we both agree that we don’t like Tom.
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: So, we’re going to see what happens with Tom. So Seol, can you please give us some background information on this.
Seol: They’re at a shopping center and they speak in formal politeness level.
Keith: Okay, thank you.
Seol: 괜찮아요.
Keith: So, let’s jump right into it.

Lesson conversation

미나 아... 톰 씨 여기도 비쌉니다….
톰 여기는 안 비쌉니다. 여기는 쌉니다.
미나 안 쌉니다. 비쌉니다.
톰 안 비쌉니다!! 쌉니다!!
미나 톰 씨… 저는 갑니다.
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Seol: 한 번 더 천천히.
미나 아... 톰 씨 여기도 비쌉니다….
톰 여기는 안 비쌉니다. 여기는 쌉니다.
미나 안 쌉니다. 비쌉니다.
톰 안 비쌉니다!! 쌉니다!!
미나 톰 씨… 저는 갑니다.
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Seol: 영어로 한 번 더.
미나 아... 톰 씨 여기도 비쌉니다….
Keith: Ah... Tom, it's expensive here, too...
톰 여기는 안 비쌉니다. 여기는 쌉니다.
Keith: It's not expensive here. It's cheap here.
미나 안 쌉니다. 비쌉니다.
Keith: It's not cheap. It's expensive.
톰 안 비쌉니다!! 쌉니다!!
Keith: It's not expensive!! It's cheap!!
미나 톰 씨… 저는 갑니다.

Lesson focus

Keith: So, what did you think of the conversation.
Seol: Confusing.
Keith: Yeah, it’s confusing, but I had a lot of fun listening to it.
Seol: Me too.
Keith: Yeah.
Seol: That’s true.
Keith: Mina put her foot down, she said “No, I’m not dealing with you anymore Tom.”
Seol: And the last line, I love that 저는 갑니다.
Keith: I’m going.
Seol: I’m going.
Keith: Yeah. Why, have you used that often?
Seol: You know I’m trying to be kind and nice to other people also.
Keith: Well, it kind of looks like, you’ve used it once or twice now.
Seol: Well…
Keith: Maybe, maybe. Okay, it’s ladies’ secret, that’s what it is.
Seol: Yes.
Keith: Okay, so today we don’t have any new vocabulary for you but we got a really, really, really important grammar point for you, and this is going to be very, very useful for you in your Korean studies. So to get into it, let’s go into the conversation. The first line we have is…
Seol: 아, 톰 씨. 여기도 비쌉니다.
Keith: The first word is, “ah…” it’s kind of like a wining. Yeah, it doesn’t really have any meaning.
Seol: Yes.
Keith: It’s another, it’s another one of those Korean sounds and it’s like, “ah…” kind of like that, right?
Seol: Yes.
Keith: So, “ah…” next we have…
Seol: 톰.
Keith: Tom followed by…
Seol: 씨
Keith: The honorific suffix, after that we have…
Seol: 여기
Keith: Here followed by…
Seol: 도
Keith: The augmentative particle. This hasn’t come out in a while, but this means also or too. So here also, after that we have…
Seol: 비싸다[natural native speed] 비싸다 [natural native speed]
Keith: To be expensive. Once again, this is in the formal politeness level. The standard politeness is…
Seol: 비싸다 [slowly - broken down by syllable] 비싸다 [natural native speed]
Keith: So, literally we have, “Ah…Tom, here also expensive” or we translate this as, “Tom, it’s expensive here too.” After that we have, 여기는 안 비쌉니다. 여기는 쌉니다.
Seol: Wow.
Keith: Wow, yeah, this is getting into a really, really important grammar point.
Seol: Yeah, this is the real Korean.
Keith: Ah, okay, real Korean, yes. None of that’s textbook stuff, right?
Seol: Yeah, this is really common conversation style.
Keith: Yes, that’s exactly right, common conversation. So let’s get into it. The first word we have is…
Seol: 여기
Keith: Here followed by…
Seol: 는
Keith: The topic marking particle. After that we have…
Seol: 안
Keith: Not.
Seol: 비쌉니다.
Keith: Expensive. So literally here it’s, “Here, not expensive” “It’s not expensive here.” Now, let’s get into this 안 or “not” in a little more detail. Now, we can use 안 in front of adjectives, and we can use it in, in front of verbs as well. This is exactly the same as in English. In English we say, “Not expensive” the “not” part comes in front, the adjective comes second. Even the verb, “I’m not going” “not” comes in front and “going” comes second. So in Korean exactly the same, not expensive, not going, not coming, not in a verb or not in an adjective.
Seol: But this is a speaking form, that’s what you have to remember.
Keith: Yes. So, can you elaborate on that a little more?
Seol: So, when I say, 가지 않는다. this is the standard form. You know, we don’t usually say that. So, in a speaking form we say, 안 가다.
Keith: Not go, exactly. So, literally 안 is “not” followed by…
Seol: 가다.
Keith: Go. Once again the same as in English, but just like Seol said, you got to be careful this is colloquial just spoke in Korean. Alright so, Tom says, “It’s not expensive.” What does he say after that? 여기는 쌉니다. Okay, the first word we have is…
Seol: 여기
Keith: Here followed by…
Seol: 는
Keith: The topic marking particle and then…
Seol: 쌉니다.
Keith: To be cheap. It’s cheap here.
Keith: Tom and Mina, they’re starting to get into a little tiff over here, right?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Just a little bit of a fight. Alright well, whose fault do you think it is?
Seol: Tom.
Keith: One hundred percent?
Seol: Yeah.
Keith: Okay. Well, let’s see what Mina has to say about it.
Female: 안 쌉니다.
Keith: Once again, not cheap.
Female: 비쌉니다.
Keith: Expensive. It’s not cheap, it’s expensive.
Keith: And Tom fights back. He fights back with a vengeance and he says 안 비쌉니다. 쌉니다. So he says, 안 not, 비쌉니다. expensive, “not expensive” followed by 쌉니다 cheap, very straightforward, and the last part we have is…
Seol: 톰씨. 저는 갑니다.
Keith: Mina, good job. She’s a strong girl, right?
Seol: I’m proud of Mina.
Keith: Yeah, I’m proud of her too. So here Mina says, “Tom, I’m going.” Let’s break it down really quickly. First is…
Seol: 톰
Keith: Tom followed by…
Seol: 씨.
Keith: The honorific suffix. That’s kind of strange. She’s still using 씨 thought right, still being very polite to Tom. She’s a good girl, that’s why I like her. Okay, after that we have…
Seol: 저
Keith: I followed by…
Seol: 는
Keith: The topic marking particle, and lastly we have…
Seol: 갑니다.
Keith: To go. This is in the formal politeness level. So they have this little fight, “it’s cheap,” “no, it’s expensive,” “no, it’s cheap,” “no, it’s expensive,” and finally…
Seol: She doesn’t want to be with Tom anymore.
Keith: Yeah. Well, good job Mina. Just to end really quickly, let’s go over the politeness levels for 갑니다, the formal politeness level is…
Seol: 갑니다
Keith: The standard politeness level…
Seol: 가요
Keith: And the intimate politeness level…
Seol: 가

Outro

Keith: Okay, that’s going to do it for today..
Seol: 안녕!
Keith: See you!
