Are western football players names translated in Korean media?

Hi there,

I am currently writing my Master thesis and for that I do need some quick help. The question right upfront: Do the names of western football players such as Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowski or even Asian players like Shinji Kagawa get translated when used in Korean Newspapers?

The reason why I’m asking is, that I need to figure out how often certain players are mentioned in Korean media. For Korean players such as the Dortmund defender Park Joo-Ho I use both his western name and his Korean name as search terms. But what would I use for football players that are not Korean? Do the Korean newspapers stick to the western names?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for commenting. Usually the Korean media would refer to the names of Western players as is, so Thomas Müller's name would be written as '토마스 뮐러'.
In the case of Asian names with Chinese characters, they are written as they are pronounced in their respective countries, and if they have Chinese characters in the name, sometimes it would be included afterward in brackets.
However, as Asian countries tend to put the last names first, then the given names, the last name would come first, then the given name. For example, Shinji Kagawa would be written as '카가와 신지(香川 真司)', with the Chinese characters sometimes included in brackets. (Some media include the Chinese characters and some do not).
