hey thanks trutherous!

may i know if my understanding for both sentences is correct

한국은(korea) 기가(vigor/strength/breath?) 막히게(stop) 아름다워요(beautiful)

한국은(korea) 더할나위(perfect) 없이(very) 아름다워요(beautiful)

also, why is it that i do not need to put any particle after korea? if i were to put a particle, should i use the suject, topic or location particle and why/why not?

Hi, allysark7131

I'm Jaehwi from Koreanclass101.com

Let me add some comments on your translation.

기가 막히다 is a phrase meaning 'my ki(energe) has been stopped' and it means 'it was so beautiful, so my all energy just have stopped because of the surprise'

So, you don't have to translate it word by word. You can just remember that it means 'so beautiful'.

You also asked about the particle. In 한국은, 한국 is the noun for 'Korea', and 은 is the object-marking-particle. So, you've already use the particle in the sentence.

If you need more help, feel free to leave the comment here. Thank you!

what is the meaning or purpose of 게in 기가막히게? thanks!

in this case it functions like 'ly' in breathtakingLY
기가(life force e.g. 'breath') 막히(막히다 - to be stopped, blocked) 게 - LY
아름답다 - beautiful

in another common use you will often see --게 indicates cause as in 'causes' or 'makes' to happen
-verb- 하게 하다 -to cause/make the preceding action happen
-verb- 못 하게 하다 -to prevent the preceding action from being accomplished

Hi, allysark7131

In that case, you can say

'난 더 이상 휴가도 없고, 어떻게 하지?"

난 - I
더 이상 - any more
휴가 - vacation
도 - particle to emphasize
없고 - not to have

어떻게 - how
하지? - to do? should I do?

can i ask if 난 is a short form for 나는 and i can use either one and it will still be correct or is there a difference?
can the particle 도be used to emphasize anything at all? can you a 2 more examples where 도is can be used? what is the difference between 없고 and 없이

Hi, I'm jaehwi from Koreanclass101.com

As you said, 난 is a short form for 나는. they have the same meaning. you can use both of them.

And.. particle '도' is used to emphasize the meaning, because it also means 'too, also'

In the below sentence,

- 나는 돈도 없고, 집도 없고. (I don't have money, and don't have a house)
You can find particle '도' to emphasize. You can just say '나는 집이 없고'. but if you use the particle '도', it will emphasize the meaning of your sadness.

And..

to find out the differences between 없고 and 없이,

please compare these two sentences.

나는 돈도 없고, 집도 없어. (I don't have money, and house)

나는 돈도 없이 집에 왔어. (I came back home without having money)

If you just say 없고, then, it just mean 'don't have something and..' because the particle '고' means 'and'.
If you say '없이', it means the condition; the condition that you don't have any money.

I wish this would help you. Thanks!

hey jaewhi, thanks so much for the explanation. i think i am getting it.

so if 고 means 'and' would it make a sentence like '나는 집이 없고' an imcomplete sentence?

Hi

Postby jaehwi » July 20th, 2011 3:33 am

Hi.'-고' is the particle to emphasize, but not the ending particle.

The sentence should be finished with '-요' or '-다'. So, if you want to make one sentence with the example,
you can make it like '나는 집이 없고요.' : )
