Jaehwi: Hi everyone. I am Jaehwi. Welcome back to Korean Weekly Words. Let’s see what we have for this week. This week’s theme is home electronics. Okay that might be my favorite topic to talk about because I am kind of geek.
So first word we have is 전기오븐 (jeongi obeun) which means microwave oven. So you can say 전기 (jeonggi) means “electronic” and 오븐 (obeun) means “oven.” So with that word, you can say 토스트를 만들기 위해서 전기오븐을 켰습니다. (Toseuteureul mandeulgi wihaeseo jeongiobeuneul kyeotsseumnida.) which means “I just turned on the microwave oven to make a toast.”
Okay next we have 청소기 (cheongsogi) which means “vacuum cleaner.” 청소 (cheongso) means “cleaning” and 기 (gi) is the word meaning “machine.” So it literally means machine for cleaning. Okay with that word, you can say 매주 일요일에는 청소기를 돌립니다. (Maeju iryoireneun cheongsogireul dollimnida.) which means “I run a vacuum cleaner every Sunday.”
Okay next we have 세탁기 (setakgi) which means “washing machine.” So 세탁 (setak) means “washing clothes” and 기 (gi) again means “machine.” 세탁기 (setakgi). With that word, you can say 우리집에 있는 세탁기는 건조기도 됩니다. (Urijibe inneun setakgineun geonjogido doemnida.) which means “The Washing machine at my home can also work as a dryer.” So these days we can find that kind of washing machine or 세탁기 (setakgi) a lot in Korean houses.
Okay next we have 선풍기 (seonpunggi) which means “fan.” We have a very interesting myth about fan which is something like if you just turn on the fan and just take a sleep in front of the fan, then you will die because it will take all the oxygen around the room and it will just make you feel cold. So you just die because there is no oxygen and because you just you know freeze to death. With that word, you can say 저는 어렸을 때 잘 때 선풍기를 켜 놓지 않았습니다. (Jeoneun eoryeosseul ttae jal ttae seonpunggireul kyeo nochi anatsseumnida.) which means “When I was young, I didn’t keep the fan turned on while I was sleeping.” because I didn’t want to be killed by a fan.
Okay next we have 에어컨 (eeokeon) which means “air conditioner.” So in Korean, we don’t say 에어 컨디셔너 (eeo keondisyeoneo) to mean “air conditioner.” We just say 에어컨 (eeokeon). So for example, when you get on the bus and if you feel it’s very hot inside the bus, then you can ask the driver by saying 에어컨 켜 주세요. (Eeokeon kyeo juseyo.) which means “Turn on the air conditioner, please.”
End that’s all for this week. I hope you will like some of the words that we introduced. I will see you next week. 다음 시간에 뵙겠습니다. (Daeum sigane boepgetsseumnida.) 안녕히 계세요. (Annyeonghi gyeseyo.)
