| In the last lesson, we saw how to order food in Korean. In this lesson, we’re going to learn what to say once you have finished your meal. |
| At most Korean restaurants, the waiters won't come automatically when you finish your food, but instead they will come when called. So when you're done eating and ready to go, it's up to you to ask for the check. |
| First, call the waiter with 여기요 then say |
| 계산할게요. |
| 계산 means ‘paying’ and 할게요 menas ‘I’ll do’. So 계산할게요 literally means ‘I’ll pay’. You can use this phrase to ask for the bill. |
| [slowly] 계산할게요. |
| Soon the bill will arrive, usually as a small sheet of paper. If you're with friends, now comes the fight over who will pay. Koreans hardly ever split the bill. Instead, people take turns treating each other. |
| If you aren't sure whose turn it is, or if you just got paid or want to celebrate your friends' success or something, you can offer to pay by saying |
| 이번에는 제가 살게요. |
| 이번에는 means "this time," 제가 means "I," and 살게요 is a casual way to say "will buy." All together, it means ‘I will buy this time’ or ‘I will treat you’. |
| [slowly] 이번에는 제가 살게요. |
| When the meal is finished and paid for, it's polite to say 잘 먹었습니다. This literally means "I ate well" and expresses your gratitude to your friends for treating with you or eating with you. You can also use it to thank a waiter or cook for a tasty meal. |
| [slowly] 잘 먹었습니다. |

| Most Korean restaurants accept credit cards. If you want to confirm that the one you're in does, just ask |
| 카드 되나요? |
| 카드 just means “card,” and 되다 means “possible.” 나요 turns it into a question. |
| So 카드 되나요? means |
| “Can I pay by card?” |
| [slowly] 카드 되나요? |
| Remember, you don't have to tip in Korean restaurants. If the place is really nice or you're with a big group, a service charge might be included, but you'll never be expected to pay more than the amount shown on the bill. |
