Hello Anthony,
Thanks for the comment!
First of all, this fairy-tale is just a story. Some of Korean fairy tales have the moral (meaning) but, I think this story does not carry a deeper meaning.
Second, I think the moral of this fairy tale is that people have to be ‘patient’ and ‘willing’ to wait in order to get what they really want. In this story, everything went wrong since ‘he’ forced ‘her’ to live with him together, in spite of her warning and hesitation.
Third, I can’t make any connection between ‘a bluejay’ and ‘bamboo comb’. (sorry!)
Last, the role of a ’stranger’ indicates people who are so greedy and immoral that they “take” whatever they desire to have.
The moral of this story is ‘to be patient with what we really want’ (I think).
Thanks for listening,
cheers,
Tim ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Please explain this story to me! What is the significance of a bluejay and bamboo comb? Why did a stranger show up and ‘take her’?
Overall, what was the moral of this story?

Korean folk tales seem to be fond of seeing people turn into random objects at the end. First the brother and sister becoming celestial objects after hiding from the tiger, and now a snail girl becoming a comb. Makes the man turning into the bluebird seem positively normal. Hmm.

Also, what is it with Korean having about a million different words for “wife?” In this lesson there was ๊ฐ์‹œ and ์ฒ˜, added to ์‚ฌ๋ชจ๋‹˜, ๋ถ€์ธ, ์•„๋‚ด, and the first one I learned (and also the most entertaining), ์ง‘์‚ฌ๋žŒ.๐Ÿ˜•

I thought I was getting it — right up until the snail girl turns into a comb. Then you lost me…
